Description
312 pages with illustrations. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with front board and spine stamped in turquoise in original publisher's pictorial jacket. Signed by the author on the front free end paper. First edition.Though Thorne Smith's most popular works involve elements of fantasy and science fiction, the clever novel Turnabout takes his penchant for incorporating supernatural and magical themes in his work and puts one such plot twist to use as a comedic tool. An ancient Egyptian idol grows weary of the seemingly never-ending spats between the Willows, a young married couple, and forces them to switch bodies. As you might expect, hilarious hijinks ensue. Sally Willows envied her adman husband his glamorous work; Tim Willows felt Sally lived in ease and luxury while he was sweating to pay the bills. So an ill-tempered minor god, tired of their bickering, worked a modest miracle, and Sally Willows, now occupying her husband's body, experienced the full horrors of the Nationwide Advertising Agency, while Tim, now outwardly Sally, dealt with the amorous advances of a local Lothario. It was a toss-up whether Sally/Tim's well-earned dismissal or Tim/Sally's bizarre attempt at murder was more spectacular - but both seemed insignificant when Tim found he was pregnant!Turnabout was made into a 1940 comedy film directed by Hal Roach and starring Adolphe Menjou, Carole Landis and John Hubbard. Based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Thorne Smith, the screenplay was written by Mickell Novack, Bernie Giler and John McClain with additional dialogue by Rian James. It was also a an American television situation comedy that first aired on NBC in 1979, based on the 1931 novel of the same title by Thorne Smith. The plot was about a husband and wife who found themselves inhabiting each other's bodies, similar to the plot of Freaky Friday. The series.Condition: Signed on front free end paper, lightly rubbed and soiled. Jacket restored and repaired at edges, jack spine lightly sunned, some rubbing and thumb soiling to jacket still a near fine copy in like jacket.

v+402 pages with diagrams. Octavo (9" x 6 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine with black labels and original wrappers bound in. From the library of Jsames J Barrett. Volume I. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 6389) (Hagedorn: 36) First edition.Fiske's Chess Monthly, launched when he was just twenty five years of age, was an outstanding periodical when first published between 1857 and 1861, probably the best in the English language up to that time, and for a long time thereafter; (John Keeble wrote in The British Chess Magazine in November 1931, page 496, "it is safe to say that [Fiske's] magazine remains to this day the most interesting thing of the kind ever issued"), and, 160 years later, it is still an extraordinarily interesting read for chess history and literature devotees. The Problem Department by E B Cook. This was one of the first magazines published in America. It was started in 1857 and lasted until 1861. It was published at the height of Morphy's popularity and presence. This American magazine launched in the same year as the First American Congress in New York, where Paul Morphy triumphed over Louis Paulsen. It ran as far as the fifth month of the fifth year (like Chronicle), also in the old-style descriptive notation), and the first volume proudly bears the names of Morphy and Daniel Fiske, the secretary of the Congress. The respective input of the joint editors has since been the subject of some academic debate but in 1857 more pressing matters were being discussed, such as the ""lives of Great Chess Men"" Ponziani and Philidor (not to mention the not/so-famous Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lueneberg - who went under the chess pseudonym of Gustavus Selenenus and was an ancestor of Morphy's famous opera-victim), the soundness of the enpassant rule, and whether any New York player had the bottle to take on Morphy with only a pawn and move oddsJames J. Barrett wrote a few chess columns in the Buffalo area. In a chess magazine beginning on page 1 of the March 1948 Chess Review: he wrote a letter of complaint about the magazine's choice of front-cover photographs. He played a substantial role in Paul Morphy The Pride and Sorrow of Chess by David Lawson (New York, 1976), and in the Acknowledgments (page vii) Lawson wrote, "I wish particularly to express gratitude for the suggestions and generous help of James J. Barrett, with special reference to the selection, preparation, and proofreading of the games."Condition:Original wrappers bound in, lacks wrapper to number one, heal corner of title stained, some pages with old institutional embossed stamp, some occasional pencil notations else about very good.

Description
viii+376 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in period cloth with blind stamped covers with gilt insignia, and gilt decoration and lettering to spine. Title in red and green with published 1845 but published in 1844. Volume V. (Betts: 7-1) First edition. The Chess Player's Chronicle, founded by Howard Staunton and extant from 1841–56 and 1859–62, was the world's first successful English-language magazine devoted exclusively to chess. Various unrelated but identically or similarly named publications were published until 1902. The earliest chess magazine in any language was the French Le Palamède, published in 1836-39 and 1842-47. In 1837 George Walker introduced an English-language magazine, the Philidorian, that was devoted to "chess and other scientific games". Only six issues of it were published, and it "expired in May, 1838". The Chess Player's Chronicle became the first successful English-language chess magazine. In 1840 or 1841 Staunton bought the fortnightly magazine The British Miscellany and Chess Player's Chronicle. In 1841 it became The Chess Player's Chronicle. In 1843, the Chess Player's Chronicle became a shilling monthly magazine. Staunton "made the inclusion of a large number of games by himself and other leading players of the day a special feature" of the magazine. He also used the magazine as a forum for attacking others. Staunton was the owner and editor of the magazine until the early 1850s, when he sold it to R.B. Brien. O'Brien became editor of the magazine, but was unable to continue its success and discontinued it in 1856 because of financial losses and his own illness. It reappeared in 1859 under the editorship of Ignatz Kolisch, Zytogorski, and Josef Kling, but survived only until July 1862. Thereafter, a number of magazines appeared with the same or similar name (such as Chess Players' Chronicle) appeared. Arthur Skipworth, assisted by William Wayte and Charles Ranken, wrote The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle, which was published in York from February 1868 to December 1871. Skipworth, who had left Bilsdale for Tetford Rectory, Horncastle, and John Wisker became the editors of the new The Chess Players' Chronicle in February 1872. Johann Löwenthal began writing for it in 1873. The magazine ran until 1875. In January 1876, it was succeeded by The Chess Player's Chronicle, whose editor-in-chief was J. Jenkin of Helensburgh. Its editorial staff consisted of Jenkin, Skipworth, Ranken, Wayte, and Andrew Hunter of Glasgow. Billed as a "monthly record of provincial chess", it was published at Glasgow, costing sixpence. Its short run under Jenkin's editorship was marked by xenophobia. The February issue stated that the West End Club had "cleared away the disturbing foreign element which whilom infected the Divan" and referring to Wilhelm Steinitz as "the hot-headed little Austrian". Its third and last issue was published in March. The magazine reappeared in January 1877. It was now under Ranken's editorship, assisted by J. Crum, G. B. Fraser, Skipworth, and Wayte. The first issue apologized for "certain offensive statements and insinuations, seriously affecting the honor of some eminent players", and explained that some members of the present editorial staff had only contributed games and other inoffensive material to it in 1875. Ranken continued to edit the magazine until September 1880. In 1881, the title was enlarged to The Chess Player's Chronicle, and Journal of Indoor and Outdoor Sports, and "the magazine's importance in the chess world was no longer the same". None of these magazines compared in quality with what Staunton had achieved, and the success of the British Chess Magazine, by the turn of the century a superb magazine, put an end to the title in 1902.Condition:Corners bumped, earlier owner's stamp to title, some occasional pencil notations, recased with new end papers else a very good copy.

Description
Lausanne, Switzerland: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Very good. Water staining, light dust soiling, a couple short tears with modern tape repairs.. An exceptional poster designed by Erik Nitsche (1908-1998), while working as art director for the engineering firm General Dynamics in 1955. It is part of the "Atoms for Peace" poster series, and was exhibited by the firm at the 1955 International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. What makes the series so impactful-- aside from their stunning use of color, typography, and image-- is the coherent message Nitsche has woven throughout the pieces: that atomic energy can be used for peace and modern innovation among nations, rather than destruction and discord sown by the advent of Oppenheimer's atomic bomb. The posters each feature a different minimal, yet nuanced expression of modern science and innovation, with the phrase "Atoms for Peace" in different languages including French, Hindi, English, Spanish, German, Italian, and Arabic. Nitsche, Erik. "Radiation Dynamics". Lausanne: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Lithographed poster measuring approx. 50" by 35". Image of red rays over abstract depiction of nature, with Arabic phrase at head reading "Corn for peace" (the only variant from "atom").

Thomas Jefferson was a member as well.Autograph letter signed, May 13, 1858, to Mr. Vrolik, Secretary of the department of the Science of Math and Physicals at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. ""Sir, I need sincerely say that I feel very highly honored by the notice which the Royal Academy of Sciences of Amsterdam has been pleased to take of my humble claims to scientific distinction, in inscribing my name in their list of associated members and I have to request that you will convey to the Academy at the first fitting occasion my best acknowledgments on the occasion. It is certainly in a high desire gratifying to me to find myself thus identified with a body so eminent and which has deserved so well of science.""I should have earlier acknowledged the recipient of this notice but that having been addressed to me vernally [what is vernally?] at ‘London' where I have not resided for the last four years. With this explanation I beg you to believe me..... JWH Herschel.""

Description
1968. Chicago antiwar protest press archive documenting the city's most volatile Vietnam-era demonstrations, centered on the 1968 Democratic National Convention and its aftermath. Protesters gathered in Grant Park, outside the Conrad Hilton Hotel, and near convention sites to oppose the Vietnam War and challenge the Democratic Party's handling of the conflict. The archive records the street-level confrontation that made Chicago a national symbol of police violence, televised disorder, and generational opposition to the war. Photo archive of 10 Large silver gelatin press photographs, most approximately 8" x 10", Chicago, 1968-1969. Crowds fill Grant Park near the bandshell, with one placard reading "Viet Nam"; police and demonstrators struggle among overturned benches; officers carry injured or arrested protesters through crowds; and soldiers unload equipment from military aircraft. Captions identify Chicago, Grant Park, the Conrad Hilton Hotel, the Democratic National Convention, and the "battle of Chicago," including scenes of young radicals armed with clubs confronting police near the hotel. Additional images show streets littered with paper and debris after the convention clashes, police using pressure gas on demonstrators, and groups moving through public spaces under heavy security presence. Press captions, agency markings, crop notes, and editorial handling marks remain attached. The archive places Chicago within the larger collapse of consensus over the Vietnam War. In August 1968, antiwar activists, student radicals, and counterculture groups arrived as the Democratic Party nominated Hubert Humphrey, while Mayor Richard J. Daley's police force met demonstrators with mass arrests, tear gas, and televised beatings. The resulting Walker Report later described the police response as a "police riot," making Chicago one of the defining confrontations between antiwar dissent and municipal power in the late 1960s. Light handling wear, editorial markings, caption attachments, creasing, and scattered edge wear from press use. Overall in good condition.

Description
Mexico and the United States, 1950. Scrapbook with approximately fifty-four photos: forty-four affixed measuring 5 x 7 inches and smaller; one loose measuring 5 x 7 inches; and nine loose measuring 8 ½ x 10 inches. With nineteen medium format negatives and six pieces of ephemera from Mexico and the US. Scrapbook pages delicate, photos excellent; overall very good to excellent.. After World War II, motorcycling’s popularity in the United States took off, especially among veterans, who had used motorcycles overseas and found them therapeutic back home.[1] At the same time, American tourism to Mexico was increasing as the growing American middle class took advantage of Mexico’s relative political stability.[2] Offered here is a photo album documenting the travels of two young men, Wayne Wolfe and Ron Metzger, on a 1947 motorcycle trip through Mexico. There is little biographical information in the album, though individuals by those names are recorded as having served in World War II, making it likely that Wolfe and Metzger were part of the veteran motorcycle boom. Photos show the two young men with their matching Indian motorcycles in Texas and Mexico, posing at camp and with people they met along the way, swimming in rivers, and riding donkeys. There is also a shot of the Norteña baseball team, labeled “Pablos’ Team”. Many shots show scenery and Mesoamerican ruins, including one striking shot of one of the young men standing atop a pyramid’s steps with his motorcycle framing the shot from below. Ephemera include a copy of Cancionero Picot (a book of Mexican ballads) and tickets to a bullfight. Of interest to motorcycle historians and researchers of the postwar tourism industry. Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Ver Beck, Frank (illustrated by).. First edition, INSCRIBED BY BOTH VER BECK AND CO-AUTHOR RION on dedication page "To our dear Will Roberts" (in VerBeck's hand). With an ANS by Ver Beck with an original sketch of a bear on stationary of the Editorial Rooms of the Literary Digest, 44-60 East 23rd Steet, New York City, laid in. On a folded sheet, Ver Beck in blue correcting pencil writes to his son's or daughter's family: "Dear Children, I sought and found sweet repose on your friendly couch last night after having robbed a man from Philadelphia. I'm off now to the (undecipherable) but peaceful heights on Hudson. Thank you! Thank you! FV 7 am" under which he has drawn one of his signature bears, hands clasped behind its back, smiling as it walks away. Charming, spontaneous thank-you note to his children with VerBeck imaging himself as his dear bear for an unplanned late night shut-eye at their apartment as he rushes out to catch the train upstate. The book has been rebacked, edges and corners are worn and covers soiled. Endpapers are missing and cloth tape reinforces spine internally.

Description
1904. Illustrated by Charles R. Macauley. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1904. 8 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth decorated in grey. First American (and first illustrated) Edition, first impression, first state (i.e. with copyright date 1904) -- of the second collaboration between Conrad and Hueffer (after THE INHERITORS). As Cagle and (much more recently) Supino have explained, this is a curious example of a later copyright date having precedence over an earlier copyright date. The original plan was for this American edition to come out in late 1903, and (incomplete but) so-dated copies were filed at the Library of Congress on October 26th. Due to several factors, publication was not ready -- so the decision was made to delay publication until the spring of 1904, and the printer was notified to change the date. Which he did -- but he also changed the copyright to 1904 as well, and the first copies went out with that erroneous date on the title verso (the first state). "This error was corrected and the 1903 copyright restored before the second printing" [Cagle] -- making the corrected 1903-copyright copies the second state of the first impression. (Second and third impressions were issued in 1904, so identified on the title verso.) This copy is in just-about-fine condition, with just a trace of wear at some binding tips. Supino A9.6.0 and Plate 9 (this copy); Cagle A9b. Provenance: discreet bookplate of the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.

Description
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1912. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. Quarto size, 347 pp. Alfred William Pollard (1859-1944) was an English bibliographer who was widely credited for bringing a higher level of scholarly rigor to the study of Shakespearean texts. This volume, part of the Connoisseur's Library, was intended to be a survey of both printing and book illustration from its beginnings to the (then) current day. In his preface, Mr. Pollard apologies for falling a bit short of the mark due to constraints both of "the limits of the present volume [and] of the author's working life". He promises that the full scope of printing has been included, but, alas, illustration only through about 1780; one wonders if he had planned another volume to cover that story of "a hundred and thirty years of very interesting picture-work". What is included is fascinating to any student of the history of printing and illustration, and covers subjects such "Collectors and Collecting", "Block Books", "The Invention of Printing", Early Dutch, German, French, Spanish, and Italian Illustrated Books, "Printing in England", and "Modern Fine Printings", among others. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red cloth, spine richly decorated in gilt and with gilt lettering, the upper portion of the front board also decorated and lettered in gilt, remainder of front board with a repeating pattern of blind-embossed floral ornaments, the whole surrounded by a blind-embossed narrow double ruled border, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, forty tissue-guarded black and white illustrations (including the frontispiece) throughout the text (not included in pagination), many signatures unopened; quarto size (10.25" by 7"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xv, 1-331, [332]; in a tan paper dust jacket, with a design in green and red which mirrors the design on the binding, the flaps and rear panel blank. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the gilt on the binding bright, a strong, square text block with a solid front hinge (back hinge with a narrow crack but the board firmly attached), the interior is clean and bright, all illustrations are present as called for and with the original tissue guards, the book entirely free of prior owner markings; the lower corners are gently bumped, the top front joint also bumped, and some offsetting to the endpapers; the dust jacket very good, entire, not clipped (although without any printed price), some minor overall edgewear, the spine sunned, and a two-inch closed tear at the top of the back joint. Overall a lovely copy and, as of this writing, the only copy being offered with the dust jacket. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Oxford: Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Duodecimo size, 257 pp. Part of "The 'Lecture Notes' Series" published by Blackwell Scientific in the 1950s and 1960s, this work on Dermatology "is intended to be an introduction to dermatology for students and general practitioners. It deals chiefly with common diseases, and to a lesser extent with some conditions which are often a sign of systematized syndromes" (Preface). The author goes on: "The importance of the skin cannot be underestimated when it is considered that life is a continuous process of the interaction between the body and its environment, and that the skin surface is the medium through which most external stimuli are received". This volume is not for the faint of heart, as it is replete with both black and white and color illustrations showing various diseases of the skin - 110 illustrations total, 32 of which are in colour (according to the dust jacket). We found little information regarding the author, although he does seem to be a "Junior"; there is another Bethel Solomons listed online which, given the dates, may very well be his father; this Bethel Solomons (1885-1965) was also a doctor, as well as an international rugby player for Ireland. His father was an optician, Maurice Solomons (1832-1922), who interestingly had his practice mentioned in James Joyce's "Ulysses"; the family is one of the oldest continuous Jewish families in Ireland. (Info from Wikipedia.) ___DESCRIPTION: Green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, illustrated with both black and white and color photographs; pagination: (i-iv), v-viii, 1-249. Cream colored dust jacket has red lettering, a summary of the book on the front flap, publisher's ads for additional titles in the series on both the back panel and the back flap. ___CONDITION: Overall, this volume is fine condition with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright. We are grading as near fine due to some prior owner markings (he neatly stamped his name to the front free endpaper as well as the bottom of the text block) and one "ding" (a shallow puncture) to the spine which did go through the cloth. The unclipped dust jacket with the original price of 21s net is in very good condition overall, however we are grading as good only due to several condition issues: the ding referred to above is also on the spine of the DJ, there is overall minor soiling, some darkening to the spine, and minor overall edgewear; some closed tears and a small chip out of the top of the jacket where the front panel meets the spine; also, the prior owner made the same neat stamp of his name to the front of the dust jacket. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
