Description
Rome: Si vende dall' Autore dirimpetta l'Academia di Franzia, 1748. FIRST EDITION. The paper bears the watermark “lily within two circles”. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary patterned boards, painted vellum spine and corners (boards and paint with some wear). Internally a fine copy with very wide margins and minimal light foxing. Part I: 4 plates comprising the title, dedication, and 2 leaves of inscriptions; 11 plates numbered 1, 6-15 (the plate numbered “1” is in some copies corrected in ink to “5”). Part II: title, 13 plates numbered 16-28, and 1 unnumbered plate “Facciate della chiesa di S. Vito. Arco di Galieno”, as called for. First edition of this work comprising some of Piranesi's earliest etchings of ancient Roman monuments. These views are “among his purest etchings in their early states. One of them, the Arco di Galieno, has a simplicity of tone reminiscent of Tiepolo or Canaletto, but in most of the others Piranesi is already using double biting to add variety and depth to his light and shade. From the purely artistic side there is scarcely anything more attractive in Piranesi’s work than this early series.”(Hind) The work was published at Piranesi’s first Rome address, on the Corso across from the French Academy (i.e. Palazzo Salviati.) The first part comprises views of monuments within the city; in the second “Antichità Romane fuori di Roma…”, Piranesi presents others found in Rimini, Pola, Foligno, Albano, Ancona, and elsewhere. Piranesi's archaeological interests are evident not only in the historical accuracy of the views, but in the two plates recording the inscriptions found on the arches and bridges depicted in the plates. The first of the two plates also includes a list of the subjects illustrated, though the final, unnumbered Arco di Galieno plate is not included in the list. In the dedication, Piranesi explains that he produced this dual volume of etchings for the purpose of placing unobserved and hidden monuments before the eyes of all, while at the same time presenting the well-known ones to a broader, international audience. “These exquisite plates, based on sketches made during Piranesi’s travels in Italy, c.1743-47, may be considered among the artist’s graphic masterpieces. They possess a unity and range of experiment lacking in the ‘Varie Vedute’ and even in the early plates of the larger ‘Vedute di Roma’, which probably overlap this series in time… They show strong evidence of Tiepolo's decisive influence on Piranesi during the latter's return visit to Venice in the mid-1740's, together with the first signs of certain compositional ideas which were to be transferred to the larger Vedute in the next decade.”(Wilton-Ely, t. I, p. 144) The work is dedicated to Monsignor Giovanni Gaetano Bottari, chaplain of Benedict XIV, Vatican Librarian, and art historian, whom Piranesi met while frequenting Casa Corsini, at the time a meeting place for intellectual and, under Bottari’s stewardship, a growing repository of prints.

Madrid: Viuda de Manuel Fernandez, 1757. First edition. Fine. Hardcover. Three volumes. Small 4tos. (24),240; (8),564; (8),436. First issue with p. II, 479 misnumbered 476. Contemporary vellum, yap edges, manuscript titles on the spines. Four folding copperplate maps: Vol. 1 contains the Mapa de la California, y su Costa Oriental Nuevamente Descubierta, based on Padre Kino's revolutionary map. Vol. 3 contains three maps: Seno de California; Carta de la Mar del Sur; and Mapa de la America Septentl. etc. The first map has a professional, nearly invisible, repair of a closed separation across the upper third of the image, no loss. Map number 4 has a neat nearly invisible repair of a closed marginal tear, no loss. Scattered light foxing; small marginal paper flaw on II, 449/450, n ot affecting the text; stamps of the Museo of Teneriffe on the second leaf of II, the third leaf of III, and a paper repair on the second leaf of III suggesting there was once a stamp there. No text is affected, Remains of string ties. Inner hinges of I and II expertly repaired. An altogether superior copy of this set, called by Cowan the"foundation of a library of Californiana." Venegas' manuscript was written between 1734 and 1739. It went unpublished because the Spanish Crown did not want details of New Spain disseminated. But eventually another Jesuit, Padre Burriel, edited the manuscript and saw it published. The large map in volume 1 is based on Kino's 1702 map. It is indeed revolutionary as it was the first attempt to end the notion that California was an island. Padre Consag confirmed KIno's findings in a 1746 expedition to the mouth of the Colorado. As Tooley notes (p. 111), Kino's map was not generally accepted; it was not until Consag confirmed Kino's discovery that caused Ferdinand VII in 1747 to issue a royal decree: California is not an island. The London edition, issued in 1758, was an abridgment of this work. Not Arizona 100, but arguably should have been; Kino and his followers are treated in several other numbers of that reference. Zamorano 80, No. 78. Cowan, p. 238; Howes V69; Palau 358387. .

When advised by Shaw’s agent that they had acquired only the serial rights, distribution in this format was halted. Formal book publication in English finally happened in 1916. Near fine original violet cloth, dustjacket chipped and with a split to spine strengthened, else good. An early pencil note on the endpaper promulgates the lie that this is one of 50 copies given to Shaw by the publisher, but this is not a common book and it is scarce in the original jacket. Description
[New York: Agate Iron Ware Manufacturing Co.; Macgowan & Slipper, Printers, 30 Beekman Street, 1885. Booklet, stapled in wrappers (15.5 x 12 cm.), [136] pages. Illustrated throughout. Title from cover. Date from page of medals received. Stated "Fourth Edition". There were at least three distinctly different works with this title, issued by the corporate author: (1890) 72 pages, with the Lalance and Grosjean Manufacturing Co name; (1891) 32 pages, an almanac, not a trade catalogue; and this one (undated) [~136 pages], a trade catalogue. Promotional, combined trade catalogue and cookbook for Agate Iron Ware Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of kitchen ware. Illustrated descriptions of the wares (typically two to a page) face recipes. The recipes are decidedly Anglo-French, not American, and they lean towards more elegant fare. Illustrations include the Agate Iron Ware manufacturing plant on front wrapper verso, an assortment of medals and awards, and an image of a homemaker sitting in her kitchen (surrounded by Agate Ware) while consulting this cookbook. The front panel bears the printed promotional statement, "Compliments of F. A. Walker & Co. Cornhill". In original, chromolithograph wrappers, decorated in a Japonisme-style. Small stain along bottom edge of text block, bit of bumping to the corners. Wrappers worn at corners, and with some wear to the bottom of the spine panel. Overall, near very good.

"Matthew Young's book showcases over 80 specimens (full size and in color), and gives a detailed account of the behind-the-scenes machinations that affected the course of the Specimen Exchange.... If you are interested in the history of graphic design, Young's book is a wonderful account of a lesser-known part of the story. It's handsome and lucidly presented and worth your time and attention." - Alastair Johnston, Booktryst The Rise and Fall of the Printers' International Specimen Exchange is the first in-depth study of an institution whose goal was nothing less than a renaissance of fine printing at a time when quantity mattered far more than quality. The Printers' International Specimen Exchange was founded in 1880, first and foremost as a means to encourage British printers to improve their technical and artistic skills, which lagged far behind those of their American and European counterparts. It came to be a far more international and influential institution than its originators imagined, its 16 volumes including the work of more than 1,000 printing establishments (several times that number of contributors, including employees and apprentices) from 28 different nations. The story of the Specimen Exchange involves the development of new machinery and processes, "Old Style" vs. "Artistic" printing, the histories of the two innovative printing houses that managed the Exchange, cooperation and conflict among outsize personalities, and the extraordinary efforts of a few talented and dedicated people. The history of the Specimen Exchange also involves a Victorian-style hostile takeover and a separate breach-of-contract court case. The Specimen Exchange is a record of a remarkable period in letterpress and lithographic printing. As a subscription publication distributed primarily to contributors, only a few hundred copies of each volume were issued, and many of the specimens were produced expressly for the Exchange. Consequently, some of the examples reproduced in this book have not been seen before outside the original volumes, and the selection presented here should delight any printing historian or admirer of good graphic design. This book includes 81 full-page reproductions of some of the best examples, in a wide range of styles and from many countries. Matthew McLennan Young is a practicing graphic designer and book collector, and the author of a previous study, Field & Tuer, the Leadenhall Press, (Oak Knoll Press and the British Library, 2010) that earned positive reviews in the TLS, the Book Collector and elsewhere. He has presented papers on the Printers' International Specimen Exchange, the Caxton Celebration of 1877, and the Leadenhall Press at various conferences. He and his wife, Valerie, live in Hopewell, New Jersey.
