Description
Unknown place: Not Published, [1882]. Contemporary three-quarter leather.. Very good; front cover detached; spine worn; card stock pages a bit warped.. Folio. An album of 62 albumen prints (meas. appx. 115 x 195 mm.) mounted two to a page recto and verso on thick card stock meas. appx. 345 x 273mm. Most of the photographs are dated in the negative. There is no text; the exception is a nine line printed label mounted in the center of the first page of the album identifying the bridge and its basic details. A detailed record of the construction of the bridge by F J Haynes who had recently been appointed the official photographer of the railroad. The bridge was a wooden trestle design of 1500 feet in length between four stone piers in the river. It utilized a combination Whipple truss and bowstring trusses at the landings. The two main spans saw sections of the truss assembled on land and then floated and lifted into place for assembly. Morison (DAB XIII, 191-192) had previously designed and built a number of bridges for the Erie Railroad under the direction of its chief engineer Octave Chanute. He was, however, at this time, an independent contractor and this was his most sophisticated individual effort. He would go on to complete several more bridges across the northern United States amassing an astonishing record of successful crossings of most difficult environments. Haynes carefully photographed the most salient features of the multi-year construction providing a superb - possibly unique - engineering record of the construction work. OCLC does not locate any copies of this album; see the Tilden biography of Haynes, Following the Frontier ...., who mentions Haynes' bridge photographs but provides no illustrations to match this album; absent from the North Dakota Historical Society collection. See chapter 4 in Edwards' ... Early American Bridges for an excellent account of bridge engineering and material science.

Description
London: printed for Henry Rhodes; Thomas Newborough; the assigns of L. Meredith; and Elizabeth Harris, 1701. First edition in English of Moreri's great Le grand dictionaire historique, here styled the "second edition, revis'd, correct'd and enlarg'd to the year 1688," 4 vols. in 3, folio, engraved frontis portrait, title-pp. in red and black; text in double column; contemporary and probably original quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering direct on spines; joints cracked, cords holding; extremities rubbed and worn; rear cover of vol. I loose but present; mild dampstaining on last 20 leaves in bottom margin of vol. II, with resultant mildew; a venerable-looking set. Ebert 14387, citing Moreri: "A work esteemed notwithstanding its faults. The first edition appeared, Lyons, 1674. fol. in 1 vol. The work was gradually augmented by Parayre, the Abbe de St. Ussan, J. Le Clerc [as here], Vaultier, Dupin, Jac. Bernard, L. Fr. Jos. de la Barre, Pt. Rogues and Cl. Pt. Goujet. Concerning the different editions, see Marchand, Dictionn. II. 289." Circle of Knowledge #13, also citing Moreri: "The title does not convey the full import of Moreri's work, which contains also much geographical and biographical material. His book is arranged alphabetically, with articles on places, people, books, and general subjects intermixed. Encyclopaedias modeled on it were published in Germany, Switzerland, and England; Peter the Great is supposed to have commanded a Russian translation, and an Italian translation was projected." And Spanish edition appeared in Paris in the mid-18th century in volumes. Says DNB of Collier's contributions: "Although many of the original articles, especially those on church matters, are learned, the book as a whole did not satisfy the requirements of scholars, and was pronounced inaccurate [but] the labour of production must have been very great.

Description
London: James Wyld, 1841. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand colored outlines. Image measures 16.5" x 13.5". This map of the Burman Empire includes the modern-day regions of Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and the tip of Borneo. The map was published in 1841, amidst a tumultuous period of increasing European colonial influence, with the British, Dutch, and French vying for political control and resources. Originally published in 1825 during the First Anglo-Burmese War, Wyld issued several updated editions through the 19th century. This edition extends from Bootan (Bhutan) and Calcutta, to Canton, and south to show the Strait of Malacca and Singapore. Cities, rivers and waterways, and regions are labeled. Topography is rendered by hachure. Islands and coastal features are extensively labeled, highlighting the importance of the coastlines to global maritime trade. The map is in very good condition, with a closed tear to right margin not affecting the image. Minor worm holes along plate line in left margin. James Wyld (1812-1887) was a distinguished British mapmaker known for producing maps and globes. He served as Geographer to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This lovely map of the East Indies is a fine example of his work.

Description
New York: Youth Against War and Fascism, [197-]. 8.5x14 inch sheet of primrose yellow paperstock, mimeographed text one side, horizontal fold, otherwise very good. The reference to Agnew is a tongue-in-cheek insult directed at mayor John Lindsay, who nominated Agnew at the previous Republican convention. Argues that Lindsay is no more opposed to the Vietnam War than other mainstream politicians. Notes his prosecution of Panthers and Young Lords.

Description
Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Good in Fair dj. (c.1940). First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [decent reading copy, ex-lending library book but marked as such with only one stamp; the problem is the jacket, which has been trimmed slightly along top/bottom edges, and is encased in one of those old-fashioned jacket protectors with the black strips along top/bottom, then is additional glued AND taped to the endpapers, permanently I'm afraid; there's also some paper loss at base of spine, but it hardly matters]. The author's second novel, set during the Spanish Civil War. .
