Description
[London]: for the Author, 1764. First edition. Modern full morocco. Very good. Large folio (53.0 by 38.0 cm). iv, [7, subscribers' list], [1, blank], 33, [1, blank] pp; 53 (of 54) leaves, comprising 60 (of 61) engraved plates (7 double-suite, 6 folding), each numbered according to the descriptive list on pp. 19-33. Plate I serves as frontispiece; five leaves each contain two or three smaller plates. Plate VI, a floor plan of the palace restored, is lacking. Recent full speckled light brown morocco boards (lightly rubbed at extremities), gilt dentelles, spine with raised bands and gilt morocco lettering piece. A touch of mild soiling at the title; light foxing and staining (almost exclusively confined to the margins) throughout; adhesive at the joins in the large folding plates sometimes a bit darkened. A very good, amply-margined copy. First edition of this magnificently illustrated work, with views, elevations, sections, and architectural details of the emperor Diocletian's palace at Spalato (today known as Split). While the modern town was built into the ruins of the palace precinct, the two temples, the inner peristyle and most of the encircling walls remain. The origin story of the work is notable. Upon the death of William Adam (1689-1748), the leading architect in Scotland, Robert Adam (1728-1792) and his two brothers succeeded to their father's practice. In order to remedy his deficiencies in architectural understanding, Robert decided upon a Grand Tour of the monuments of classical antiquity so as "to acquire a proper manner and taste, and an elegant style of drawing" (Millard). Being the only significant unexplored classical sites in southern Europe, Spalato would prove ideal for such a project. After meeting Charles-Louis Clérisseau (1721-1820) in Florence in 1755, Adam chose to engage the young French architect as guide and drawing instructor for the next two years. Clérisseau accompanied Robert Adam during the five weeks of the summer of 1757 devoted to exploring Spalato. The engravings were probably based on drawings by Clérisseau (six of which are preserved in the Hermitage Museum), who would also go on to supervise much of the engraving. The Critical Review (October 1764) offered high praise for these illustrations which exhibited "a taste and execution that has never been equalled in this country." In his Decline and Fall (chap. 12), Edward Gibbon offered a pithy critique: "There is reason to suspect that the elegance of his designs and engravings has somewhat flattered the objects which it was their purpose to represent." Adam clearly hoped the project would generate publicity, as he sought to emulate the success of such works as Dalton's Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt (1751-1752), and Robert Wood's The Ruins of Palmyra (1753). The format of the present work is in fact modeled on Palmyra, though Adam has included a far greater proportion of picturesque views than appear in Wood's opus. "The plates, engraved by F. Bartolozzi, E. Rooker, F. Patton, P. Santini, A. Walker, K. Cunego, J. Bassire and Antonio Zucchi, are of interest not only as fine examples of architectural engraving but as showing the source of some of the motives of the Adam style" (Fowler). Adam's cousin, the scholar and historian William Robertson wrote the proposal, the dedication, and the preface. Digital Cicognara Library 3567; ESTC T46923; Fowler 2; Millard (British Books) 1.

Description
Self-published, 1978. Some scuffing to blue printed wrappers, with minor curling; close to near fine. A sharp copy of a bookwork that's prone to wear; quite uncommon signed.. First Edition. Oblong octavo. SIGNED by Kruger to the front end-paper. First artist's book from Barbara Kruger, having yet to pivot to her trademark paste-up aesthetic. Here, Kruger pairs 22 short narratives with enigmatic black-and-white photographs of architectural exteriors, in the style of Walker Evans; rather than condense her images into the direct appeal of photomontage, Kruger dreams-up a series of possible interiorities.

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1835. First edition. SCARCE FIRST EDITION EARLY AMERICAN MANUAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH BY ROBLEY DUNGLISON, PHYSICIAN TO THOMAS JEFFERSON. 8 1/2 inches tall hardcover, full leather binding, spine with black leather label, gilt title, front paste-down with residue from removal of bookplate, i-xi, 514 pp. Wear to covers, light foxing to preliminary and end pages, binding tight, unmarked, very good in custom archival mylar cover. ROBLEY DUNGLISON (1798 - 1869) was an English physician who moved to America to join the first faculty of the University of Virginia. He was personal physician to Thomas Jefferson and considered the "Father of American Physiology". Robley Dunglison was born in Keswick, Cumbria, England. He studied medicine in London, Edinburgh, and Paris. He obtained his M. D. from the University of Erlangen, Germany, in 1823. In 1824, Thomas Jefferson and the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia commissioned Francis Walker Gilmer to find professors in England for his new University. Gilmer offered the anatomy and medicine professorship to Dunglison. While at UVA, Dunglison published his landmark text Human Physiology (1832), which established his reputation as the "Father of American Physiology." In 1832, Dunglison moved to the University of Maryland. Three years later Dunglison became Chair of the Institutes of Medicine and Medical Jurisprudence at the Jefferson Medical College (JMC) in Philadelphia, where he spent the rest of his career. In his autobiography, Robley Dunglison wrote, "Before I left Virginia I had contemplated to write a work on hygiene, and when the subject, at my suggestion, was added to the duties of my chair in Baltimore it became still more desirable to have a textbook on the subject, none suitable being to be found in the language. The work was now proceeded with and it appeared at the commencement of the year 1835. Its title sufficiently indicated the subjects embraced in it.-On the influence of Atmosphere and Locality, Change of Air and Climate; Seasons; Food; Clothing; Bathing; Exercise; Sleep, Corporeal and Intellectual Pursuits, etc. on Human Health; constituting Elements of Hygiene; and it consisted of 514 pages 8vo. A supplementary chapter :ontained a deposition made by me, involving questions regarding the effect of draining a malarious soil; a table of the mean temperature and of the seasons in different places of America, Europe, etc.-Tables of the temperature of St. Augustine, etc. during certain months;-the mean temperature etc. of corresponding months in certain winter retreats; the temperature etc. of Campeche, and a Table of the comparative digestibility of different alimentary substances. The deposition on the malarious soil is especially interesting as containing the answers to questions put to me by both plaintiff and defendant; the parties having mutually agreed, that my answers should be read as evidence, without being put in a legal form. ... There were 1500 copies printed of the first edition."--S.X. Radbill, ed. Autobiographical Ana of Robley Dunglison, Trans. Am.Philos. Soc. 53:72-74, 1963.

Paris: Billois, 1810. Nouvelle Edition. 1810 TWO SMALL VOLUMES OF FABLES OF LA FONTAINE - TOTAL 500 PAGES, 25 ENGRAVED PLATES, SIGNED, DATED 1818 BY ADMIRAL ARCHIBALD DUFF WITH HIS ARMORIAL BOOKPLATES. Two 8.5x14 cm volumes full calf bindings, gilt red and black leather labels to spine, marbled endpapers, armorial bookplate of Admiral Duff 1858 to front paste-down of each volume. Vol. I, ink signature of "Arch Duff/ Oct 1818" verso frontispiece portrait of la Fontaine; Vol. II, signature "Arch Duff/ October 1818" title page. Vol. I, frontispiece, 12 plates, 220 pp, Vol. II, 12 plates, 280 pp. Joints cracked but bindings tight, corners bumped, text pages and plates crisp and clean, very good in custom archival mylar cover. JEAN DE LA FONTAINE (1621 - 1695) was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. Derived from many originals such as Aesop and Horace, they are rendered in deceptively simple verses that are easily memorised by children, yet display deep insights into human nature. The Fables were issued in several volumes from 1668 to 1694. Keen insight into the foibles of human nature is found throughout, but in the later books ingenuity is employed to make the fable cover, yet convey, social doctrines and sympathies more democratic than the age would have tolerated in unmasked versions. PROVENANCE: ADMIRAL ARCHIBALD DUFF (1774-1858) entered the Navy, 29 June, 1788, as a Boy, on board the Champion 24, Capt. Sampson Edwards, on the Leith station. In Jan. 1791, he became Midshipman of the Martin sloop, Capt. Geo. Duff, and with that officer he continued employed, in the Resource 23, Duke 98, Ambuscade 32, and Glenmore 50, until May, 1798. In the Duke he served under the broad pendant of Commodore Murray during the expedition against Martinique, in June, 1793. Having been awarded, when in the Ambuscade, a commission, dated 8 Dec. 1798, Mr. Duff, on leaving the Glenmore, was appointed to a Lieutenancy in the Foudroyant 80, Capt. Sir Thos. Bayard, on rejoining which ship, after a brief attachment to the Barfleur 98, we find him, while at the blockade of Malta, present with Lord Nelson at the capture, 18 Feb. 1800, of Le Gnreux 74, and Ville de Marseilles store-ship. He soon after removed to the Queen Charlotte 100, bearing the flag of Lord Keith, and, on 17 March following, narrowly escaped involvement in the destruction of that ship, being on board when she took fire in Leghorn Roads. In the course of the same year he was promoted from the Minotaur 74, Capt. Thos. Louis, to the acting-command of the Bonne Citoyenne sloop; but his confirmation not taking place, he joined the Guillaume Tell 80, and next became First Lieutenant to Lord Keith, in his old ship the Foudroyant. After figuring in the Egyptian campaign, for his services during which he received the Turkish gold medal, Mr. Duff, who had been invested with the temporary command of the Mondovi brig, returned to England with Capt. Rich. Curry, R.N., and Major Henry Montressor, the officers charged with the naval and military despatches announcing the surrendar of Grand Cairo. Prior to his official promotion to the rank of Commander, 29 April, 1802, he appears to have repulsed an attack made on the Mondovi by 17 Spanish gun-boats in the Gut of Gibraltar, and to have been in command of the Lutine prison-ship at Minorca. Capt. Duff's first appointment on the renewal of hostilities was, 25 Oct. 1803, to the Megaera fire-ship, in which, with a few small vessels occasionally under his orders, he was employed watching the enemy's ports in the Channel. Assuming Post-rank 22 Jan. 1806, he next joined, 28 May, 1807, the Muros 20, and in that ship, after convoying a fleet of merchantmen to Halifax, was unfortunately wrecked on a reef at the entrance of the Bay of Honda, in Cuba, 24 March, 1808. His last employment was in the command, from 23 April, 1814, to Aug. 1815, of the President 38, on the Irish station. He attained Flag-rank 17 Aug. 1840.

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea, & Blanchard, 1835. Reissue. Half-Leather. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. Early reissue (the work was first published serially 1819-20, and first appeared in book form in 1824). Boards rubbed (more severely along bottom of volume 1 rear board), three of four spine labels absent, light 2 inch stain to top page margin of first tweo-thirds of first volume, small dealer bookplate on front endpaper of each volume, lightly foxed throughout. 1835 Half-Leather. xxv, [26]-276; vi, [7]-235 pp. Brown leather spines and corners, marbled paper over boards, gilt titles and rules. "In 1809, New Yorkers were buzzing about a series of classified ads concerning the whereabouts of Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. They were unaware that Washington Irving had invented the man entirely and placed the ads himself. Knickerbocker's purported manuscript, A History of New York, was Irving's own. Told from Knickerbocker's point of view, A History of New York is a chronicle of New York's fifty years under Dutch rule in the 1600s that plays fast and loose with the facts, to uproarious effect. Irving's good-humored spoofing had staying power, and his satire provided the city with its first self-portrait. A History of New York propelled Irving to the heights of literary stardom and even made a little history of its own: New Yorkers are called Knickerbockers to this day." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859) was an American author of the early 19th century. Best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" (both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon), he was also a prolific essayist, biographer and historian. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th century Spain dealing with subjects such as Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra.
