1827. [London: William Blake, 1827]. Printed in black ink on thick card. Very finely printed, in good condition though trimmed very close to the image at the left and right edges, once pasted down and thus with traces of mounting on the verso and pencil notes from an earlier collector (c. 1950?), image and plate mark exactly as per Essick 1DD. ß Blake s last engraving, executed for one of his closest friends. Blake inscribed the plate, lower right, with his name and age, A Δ 70. He may have sensed that 1827 could well be the last year of his life, but took pride in being capable of pursuing his art and craft to the end. Blake was in fact 69 when he died; perhaps he inscribed 70 on the Cumberland card in anticipation of working on it until he turned that age. At least when considered in retrospect, this most unusual inscription contributes to the elegiac and prophetic iconography of the design. The images invoke one of Blake s greatest themes the relationships between time and eternity. Although probably intended as a calling card, two books have been located with this card pasted in, both written by George Cumberland Jr. Thus it has on occasion been sold as a bookplate. Examples on card not in Cumberland s book are exceptionally rare and have been presumed to be of the earliest printing and possibly by Blake himself. All other impressions (on laid paper most often) are posthumous. Thirty-nine examples in all are known to Essick, not including examples now untraced, of which eight are on card, of which one is described as printed in green ink. Annawan [WI]: Unknown Prtr., 1860. Edition Unknown.. As issued.. A very good copy with some small marginal chipping; printed horizontally on a sheet 9 x 12 inches.. Broadside. Annawan was a farming community in Wisconsin. It no longer exists. The town was located near the present day city of Menonomie close to the border with Minnesota. This broadside was issued by local farmers calling for a public meeting (May 10, 1860) in response to the local railroad imposing a one cent a bushel tax on all grain shipped out of Annawan. This broadside is among the earliest artifacts of people vs. railroads and railroad rates in the northwestern territories. This conflict shifted to the courts (Peik vs. Chicago & Northwestern, 1876) culminating in cases into the late 1920s before the Supreme Court. Unlocated.

Fine book; about fine unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, a couple of light crease-marks to panels, and a one-inch closed tear to bottom of front panel. With a COA from Certified Authentication Service (CAS). Overall, a lovely copy. Joe DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. Outside of baseball, he was known for his high-profile marriage with Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio was one of the rare athletes that transcended his sport: his association with a bygone era of America was noted in Simon and Garfunkel's Grammy Award-winning song, "Mrs. Robinson." Chefoo, China: Temple Hill Cut-outs, 1930. Hardcover. Fine. Oblong 8vo. Eight leaves of handmade heavy paper interleaved with text leaves printed on glassine. Each page has a silhouette intricately cut out of black paper and mounted. Bound in a Chinese-style binding with woven tapestry covers depicting a stream, pagodas, bridge, village and water bird, all in shades of green, beige and brown. The first page contains a cutout of two figures, one in a boat, and the other on land with a tree and the title cut out of its branches. Thereafter are pictures of the seven legends with an English description facing on glassine: stories of children, frogs, the friend who failed, all popular legends of ancient China. With a letterpress sheet laid in describing the intricate process of making the silhouettes. A fine exemplar. A production of the Women's Bible School, Self-help Dept., Presbyterian Mission, Chefoo (now Yantai). The mission was established in 1899. .

Sections on woodcuts, metal engravings, drypoint, etching, mezzotint, aquatint, wood engraving, lithograph, and serigraph. Includes an introduction which incorporates the following information: "This booklet was designed by Elfriede Abbe and hand set in Perpetua type with the assistance of Pamela Fontana and Carleton Howe. One hundred twenty-five copies on Rives paper were printed by leterpress in the print shop of the Southern Vermont Art Center." Elfriede Abbe (d. 2012) was a renowned Vermont artist whose sculptural and graphic works are in prestigious places such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Kew Royal Botanic Gardens Library (London), National Library of Australia, McGill University (Montreal), Herzog August Bibliothek (Germany), Cornell University, the Vermont Statehouse, and more.
