ISSUED WITH: Reply to Mr. Cavendish's Answer, by R. Kirwan. BOUND WITH: Experiments on Air [Part II]. Read June 2, 1785. EXCERPTED FROM: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Volume 74. [London: Lockyer Davis and Peter Elmsly, 1784-85]. Small quarto, modern marbled wrappers; pp. 119-53, 154-69, 170-77, 178-80, 372-84. Housed in custom portfolio. $5000.First edition of Cavendish's experimental proof that water is composed of oxygen and hydrogen and therefore not a separate element unto itself, with a folding plate. As issued in Philosophical Transactions for the year 1784.""Cavendish was the first to prove experimentally that hydrogen ('inflammable air') and oxygen ('dephlogisticated air'), when mixed in the proper proportions and fired, produce their own weight in water"" (Norman). This paper, along with the short supplement he published in Philosophical Transactions the following year, disclosed the compound nature of water and thereby destroyed the elemental status of ""water"" in the Aristotelian system. Description
1775. SHARP, Granville. A Declaration of the People's Natural Right to a Share in the Legislature; Which is the Fundamental Principle of the British Constitution of State. London: Printed for B. White, 1775. Octavo, period-style three-quarter brown calf and marbled boards, raised bands, dark red spine label; pp. (4), (i-xl), 1-278 (279), (1), 2-4. $3000.Rare true expanded ""Second Edition,"" with same initial collation as a virtually unavailable 1774 edition ""made for the purpose only of being given among the Author's friends,"" combining the sheets of that work with text substantially added to assert rights such as trial by jury, the fallibility of kings, the ""people's right of representation"" and the dire effect of slavery on America's struggle for independence, noting the colonies' ""toleration of it greatly weakens the claim or natural right of our American brethren to LIBERTY"" (emphasis in original), handsomely bound.British abolitionist Granville Sharp first became ""involved in the struggle for the liberation of slaves in England"" in 1765. When the British court handed down its ""momentous"" 1772 decision on slavery, ""this first great victory in the struggle for the emancipation of slaves was entirely due to Sharp… This question did not exhaust Sharp's benevolent energies… His sympathies were easily enlisted on behalf of the American colonies, and in 1774 he published A Declaration of the People's Natural Right to a Share in the Legislature"" (DNB). It was here that Sharp persuasively addressed what was seen as a contradiction in colonial claims of ""the natural and inalienable rights of mankind… in the face of domestic slavery"" (Bailyn, 241). ""A powerful influence in determining colonial resistance"" (Howes S331), Sharp's rarely found original 1774 pamphlet ""was reprinted four times in the colonies before the year was out"" (Bailyn, 241). Sharp's defense of the people's right to a legislative voice fundamentally altered a changing tide of public opinion, and ""it was no accident that Americans in Philadelphia in 1775 formed the first anti-slavery society in the world… the Revolution in effect [would] set in motion ideological and social forces that doomed the institution of slavery in the North and led inexorably to the Civil War"" (Wood, 186-7). Stated ""Second Edition"": with half title. Contains sheets of Sharp's virtually unavailable 32-page 1774 pamphlet along with his added Preface, the ""Extract of a Letter on the foregoing subject"": pp. 33-46, and his ""Declaration… Part II"": pp. (49)-244. Containing over 30 pages of text not present in the first edition, including the Index (245-255) and ""Index of the Various Topics Discussed"" (256-279). Featuring extensive commentary on Parliament noting it ""has no power to give up the people's right of representation,"" the English common law, the danger of standing armies ""to constitutional liberty,"" the danger of a king ""who forgets he is a fallible man,"" the right to trial by jury as ""the first and most essential law of the British constitution,"" and emphasis on the dangers of slavery in America: declaring: ""The toleration of it greatly weakens the claim or natural right of our American brethren to LIBERTY"" (emphasis in original). Substantially same collation as the exceedingly rare 1774 edition: one of a very limited number ""printed for private distribution only"" (Sabin 79816), noted in a 1775 Monthly Review article stating, ""We are… sorry to find that but a small impression… has been made, for the purpose only of being given among the Author's friends"" (Adams, American Controversy 74-72b). With single blank leaf (G4), often lacking (Sowerby 3069); two leaves of publisher's advertisements at rear. Adams, American Controversy 74-72d. Goldsmiths' I:1367. Sabin 79817. See Sweet & Maxwell I:148. Text very fresh with lightest scattered foxing. A handsome about-fine copy.

Printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso. A prehistoric praying mantis is freed from the ice and wreaks havoc on the American military stationed in the northern Arctic, slowly making its way south. Description
St. Louis, Missouri; The Bethany Press, 1977 First paperback edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper by Stan Musial (HOF), sportswriter Bob Broeg, and sportscaster Jack Buck. Publisher's white, blue and yellow pictorial wrappers, with illustrations by Amadee of Musial to front wrapper, lettered in black. Very good, with a touch of wear to spine ends, light toning to spine, and a hint of rubbing to rear wrapper. Overall, a pleasing copy. Stan "The Man" Musial is the greatest St. Louis Cardinal of all-time, spending his entire 22-year career with the team (1941 - 1944, 1946-1963), and one of the greatest hitters in MLB history. Early in his career, he helped form a dynasty in St. Louis alongside Enos Slaughter and led the team to three World Series titles in five years (1942, 1944, 1946). Some of his career highlights include 24 All-Star game selections (tied for second all-time), 3 NL MVP awards, and 7 NL batting titles. An exceptional player from the beginning to the end, he batted .330 in 1962 when he was a 41-year-old grandfather, falling just 16 points shy of the NL batting title. Summing up Musial's impact on the sport, Bob Costas said, "He didn't hit a homer in his last at-bat….He didn't hit in 56 straight games… All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being." He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Bob Broeg (1918 - 2005) covered the St. Louis Cardinals for 40 years in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was awarded the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1979 and was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1997. Jack Buck, father of ESPN sportscaster Joe Buck, broadcast Cardinals games for nearly the entire second half of the 20th century (1954 - 2001, with a break in 1976). In 2014, he was inducted as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum. . Signed. First Paperback Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
