Description
London: Printed for Carnan and Newbery, 1767. PRIMER. London: Printed for Carnan and Newbery, at no. 65, in St. Paul's Church-yard, and B. Collins at Salisbury. [n.d.c.a. 1776]. An early edition the Newbery Royal Primer, the precursor to the New England Primer. This edition is unrecorded as Roscoe does not list a Carnan and Newbery imprint. The sheets, besides the imprint and the advertisement p. [1] match Roscoe 5b "The text of the TP is surrounded by an ornamental frame of oval lozenges. The letter A in the 1st line of verse on p. [2] is immediately below B in 'Books' in the line above." However, the advertisement imprint on p. [1] matches that of Roscoe 5a. The advertisement on p. [1] is for the Third edition of the "Royal Psalter" which records indicate was printed in 1776, however Roscoe states that this advert could be referring to a reprinting of the 3rd edition. Roscoe lists 12 different editions or variants of Newbery's Royal Primer but locates only four copies. Of the copies we could find at auction, besides the present copy, there have been only 3 complete copies sold of any edition. In 1978 Sothey's sold the only other copy we can locate with this Carnan And Newbery imprint. They stated "This is the only known copy of a hitherto unrecorded edition." That copy is incomplete and presently located at Princeton. Princeton notes the date to be 1767-1768. One small twelvemo volume (3 1/4 x 3 inches; 85 x 75 mm). [1]-72 pp. Complete with two leaves of woodcut alphabet containing 24 small woodcuts, and 26 additional woodcuts including the frontispiece. Original Dutch floral paper boards. Some repairs to spine and board edges. Some minor staining to a few leaves. Still a very good copy, better than usually found as it is a children's book. This primer contains the alphabet and a short scripture catechism There are woodcuts of animals and birds, and illustrations of some Bible stories and virtues. HBS 69617. $8,500.

杭州 (Hangzhou): 西冷印社 (Xi Ling Yin She)/ Xiling Seal Art Society, 1917. Ex-library, first edition. Hardcover. g- to vg. Quarto. 11.5x7". Unpaginated. Dark blue cloth portfolio, with bone clasps, and a white paper label on the front cover with black lettering. Silver calligraphic lettering on the spine. The portfolio houses 4 softcover string-tied volumes in dark blue paper wrappers, with black lettering over white paper labels on the front covers. Softcovers with black lettering along the bottom edge of the book blocks. These are the first 4 parts (the first set) of a total of 8 volumes published, collecting samples of the world-class seals created by renowned Chinese calligrapher, artist and seal carver Zhao Zhiqian (also known as Zhao Huishu). The collection contains a total of 128 pages of seals, printed in red and black on rice paper. Zhao's seal work has been noted by critics for its lack of sharply defined lines from knife carvings, and conversely his interest in the flow of ink on the seals, creating a smoother style, in more of an attempt to emulate the look and feel of calligraphy. The front of the first softcover volume contains b/w collotype reproductions of large-scale lithographic text by Zhao, and illustrated lithographic portrait of the artist. The first part contains prologue text by 葉銘 Yeh Ming and 丁仁 Ding Ren, two of the four founders of the Xiling Seal Art Society. Portfolio with rubbing to extremities and along edges, as well as to to the paper label. Missing the bottom bone claps. Some smudging to covers. Interior with some light rubbing to hinges and some damp staining to the interior boards. Wrappers with some light rubbing, creasing, chipping and/or sunning to edge, corners, and paper label. Some of the string-tied bindings are slightly loose. Interiors of the softcover volumes with some light sporadic sunning, damp staining, foxing and/or smudges throughout. Images mostly unaffected. Volume 2 with part of the string missing. Library inks stamps along the top of the book blocks of all volumes Portfolio in good-, wrappers in good to good+, interiors in good- to very good condition overall. *Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884) was an acclaimed Chinese calligrapher, painter and seal carver of the late Qing Dynasty period. His work had a huge influence on later famous artists such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi.

Description
London: Richard Bentley, 1864. First English language edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with morocco label to spine. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 179 x 119mm and collating complete including photographic frontis: x, 374. A square, tight copy with some loss to upper spine label and gentle rubbing to boards. Amorial bookplate to front pastedown. Light scattered foxing largely confined to preliminary and terminal leaves; pages 161-162 partially detached but holding. A female-authored memoir that participates in both anti-Catholicism and convent-fetish eroticism, it is somewhat scarce institutionally but is a rarity in trade with its most recent appearance at auction occurring a century ago. The present is the only example currently on the market. Frank in her delivery, Henrietta Caracciolo recounts how her rise to young womanhood under the jealous eye of her mother -- combined with the untimely death of a sympathetic father -- led to her unwilling confinement in a Benedictine convent. Denied early opportunities for engaging in the courtship and marriage economy she longs to be a part of, Henrietta Caracciolo instead is forced by her mother to repress her sexual identity and disappear into a life of solitude and chastity. What she finds there instead is a space of sexual abuse, unexplained deaths, illicit affairs, physical abuse, and theft. "My sole aim in writing these Memoirs has been to confirm," she writes in the preface, "as far as lay in my power, with the arguement drawn from fact, the opportune and just decree of the Italian government in the suppression of Convents, and to disabuse the minds of those (if haply any such remain) who deem these places the repositories of religious virtues." Timely social commentary in her native Italy, her memoirs hit a different note in Protestant England where Catholic convents and monasteries had long been closed; indeed, it participated in the anti-Catholic fetish fantasy of convents and monasteries as bastions of deviant and violent sexuality. She herself, by the memoir's end, emerges to a new and more promising life -- one which participates in popular Victorian cult of domesticity and motherhood, which she positions as far more godly and fulfilling. Yet it also leaves open the door of female desire and sexual fulfilment. "By the side of a husband who adores me, and to whom I respond with equal love, I am where the Almighty placed woman at the close of Creation's first week." Register of Erotic Books 2950.

Description
1945. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of four black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 4" x 5", without captions. Curled edges and small tears thus very good. A small archive of four sobering photographs taken of prisoners in a concentration camp during World War II. The men are pictured wearing the infamous "striped pajama" uniform of Nazi prison camps. One photograph shows a group of gaunt men lying in the dirt using cans and bricks as pillows, another shows two men helping up another with other prisoners huddled around them. The only words on any of the photos comes from a sign in one listing times for the ambulance. It is unclear who took the photos but it could be assumed that they were taken during the Allied liberation of the camps at the end of the war. A small but compelling group of photographs documenting the atrocities of World War II.
