Small octavo (17cm.); full contemporary speckled paneled calf, spine in five compartments; [16],134,[2]pp. (collated complete). Leather quite dried, especially at margins and spine with exposure at corners and top spine chord, textblock a bit toned and foxed, two early leaves with recent blue pencil underlining, 20th-century ex libris of the Hope Trust, Edinburgh, to front pastedown, else a Very Good, internally clean and sound example. The work is dotted throughout with small woodcut manicules and printed marginal text sometimes chattily addressed to Dr. Sherlock. The Swiss Protestant theologian Benedictus Aretius's defense of the execution of Valentinus Gentilis in Bern in 1566, where Aretius himself was serving as professor of theology at the time of the trial. Originally written in Latin, this edition was translated "for the use of Dr. Sherlock. Humbly Tendered to the Consideration of the Arch-bishops and Bishops of this Church and Kingdom." The translation has been attributed to English theologian Robert South (1634-1716). ESTC R006675; WING A-3629.

London, 1879. Carpenter, William B. (1813-85). Autograph letter signed to Mr. [John] Paget [1811-98]). [London] 56 Regents Part Rd. N.W., June 2, 1879. 4pp. 178 x 114 mm. A few tiny pin-holes, but fine otherwise. From English physiologist and naturalist William B. Carpenter, who "helped shape the modern life sciences in Britain (Oxford DNB) through both his writings and his work as a teacher and administrator at what is now the University of London. Carpenter performed valuable researches in marine zoology, and was directly influential in persuading the British Admiralty to sponsor the Challenger expedition, the first major scientific study of the deep oceans. Carpenter is also recognized as one of the founders of the modern theory of the adaptive unconscious-he observed that the human perceptual system and the mechanism of human thought operates almost completely outside of conscious awareness. Carpenter's letter, which discusses a false confession to murder made by a mentally unbalanced young man, reads in part as follows: Dear Mr. Paget, In turning out my papers at the University today, I have come upon a document which I forward to you, containing the Father's statement of his Son's relation to the "Brompton Murder" case, with full particulars of the latter's confession, and its inconsistency with the facts. I believe that I did not send in this to the Home Secy.; but that what I specially urged upon him was the evidence with which Knowles had supplied me, of the "cracky" nature of the youth's mind, and of the obviously hereditary tendency to brood, as shown in the father and aunt-the latter an old servant of Knowles. And I remember also that there was evidence of the youth having had money in the Savings Bank, and of his having drawn out a pound just before the Crystal Palace Police Fête. This altogether made so strong an impression on Mr. Bruce, that he at once commuted the sentence; and the family were so sensible that the lad was not fit to take care of himself, that they expressed no disappointment at his not having received a free pardon. . . . Carpenter's correspondent was the police magistrate and author John Paget, whose Paradoxes and Puzzles, published in 1874, included accounts of a number of sensational crimes. We have not been able to identify the murder case to which Carpenter refers in his letter. .

(San Diego, CA): The Continental Dance Club, 1958. Very good +.. A compact collection of 1950s photographs and archival material relating to The Continental Dance Club, located at the Lafayette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. Five 8" x 10" photographs of the club's interior and exterior (stamped "K. Jordan-Day") reveal fine mid-century furnishings, interior design, and hand-painted signage. Four 5" x 7" prints show couples dancing. Business materials include an illustrated mailing envelope, blank membership forms, a blank sales contract, a proof sheet and two clippings of an ad which appeared in the San Diego Union Tribune, and a rough draft plus finished direct mail TLS from the club's grand opening ad campaign. The club operated on a membership model and promised professional dance instruction along with the opportunity to "mix with wonderful people who share your enthusiasm for social friendship, music and dancing." American entrepreneurship meets post-war optimism. Wraps. 4to. Faux-leather covered plastic spiral bound album measuring approximately 10.5" x 8.75". 7 plastic covered paper leaves with 9 black and white photographs, plus various clippings, business documents and scrap material loosely mounted and laid in. Covers torn at upper spine, crease to front cover at upper right. Contents well preserved, loose articles with moderate wear. Very good overall.

Iaroslav Rudnytskyi, alt. spelling Jaroslav Rudnyckyj (1910 - 1995) was a Ukrainian-Canadian author, folklorist, linguist, lexicographer, co-founder of the Canadian branch of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences, and a founding father of Canadian "Multiculturalism." After leaving Ukraine between the two wars, he was a professor at the Ukrainian Free University in Prague between 1941 and 1945 and at the University of Heidelberg from 1945 to 1948, before emigrating to Canada and organizing the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba. A prolific writer, he published numerous books on the dialects of the Ukrainian language and its etymology, dictionaries, chronicles of Slavic holdings in various North American libraries, and more.
