Description
Firenze: Stampata in Bologna con licenza de’Superiori et restampata in Firenze, 1592. 8vo.  145 x 95 mm.,  [5 2/4 x 4 inches].  [4] leaves. Title printed with an typographical border.   Bound in recent half red morocco over marbled paper boards, title gilt on spine.  A fine copy. Originally published in 1590, this is the second edition of this rare poem in praise of the pork.  Written in the form of a eulogy the author, praises the part of the pig and briefly discusses their preparation and the delicate flavor that each can achieve under the direction of a master chef.  The author is unknown other than for this publication, and it may be surmised that having been originally published in Bologna, its’ publication is a celebration of the quality of the beast and many gifts if offers to a hungry and adoring public. This title is cited in the Italian Union Catalogue (SBN ICCU) but only the 1590 edition and specific copy is listed.  It does not appear in OCLC or NUC. See Westbury, Handlist of Italian Cookery Books, p. 30, listing only the 1592 edition.  Not cited in Vicaire or Biting.  Maria Paleari Henssler cites the title in her book Bibliografia latino-italiana di gastronomia, p. 87 but no location is listed.  This is probably the Westbury copy!  .

Description
Venezia: Tipografia di Gio Cecchini e Comp., 1843. 8vo.  225 x 150 mm., [8 ¾ x 6 inches].  112 pp.  Original blue paper, printed wrappers, stitched as issued; front wrapper with some creases and the spine with some rubbing, otherwise sound and attractive. First and only edition of Bartolommeo Bizio's response to the work of Dr. Ambrogio Fusinieri's essay on the creation of the color purple from the internal organs of mollusks found in abundance in the Mediterranean Sea.  Bizio relies on the writings of Aristotle and Pliny and provides a detailed description of the variety of mollusks described by the ancients and the methods used to render the liquor from the shellfish.  He follows this with details describing the difficult process required to produce the color purple for use by painters and cloth makers in the ancient world.  Called Royal Purple, this pigment was a rare and valuable color thus making it both rare and expensive. Carlo Piersanti and Ugo Enrico Paoli, "Porpora".  Enciclopedia Italiani, (1935).  OCLC lists copies at Berkeley and the Field Museum in Chicago.  NUC cites only the Berkeley copy.  ICCU list 10 copies in Italian libraries.

London: George Bell & Sons, 1905. No. 2 OF 75 NUMBERED COPIES printed on Japanese Vellum. 220 x 145 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 3/4"). 1 p.l., x, 402 pp., [3] leaves. LOVELY SCARLET MOROCCO BY THE BENNETT BOOK STUDIOS (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), covers with gilt-ruled border and floral cornerpieces surrounding sprays of roses with gilt stems and leaves and white leather onlaid flowers with gilt detailing, raised bands, compartments with gilt lettering or with central gilt flower surrounded by a dense border of gilt floral tools, gilt-ruled turn-ins, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In a (slightly faded) red oil cloth dust wrapper and felt-lined slipcase. With 18 full-page illustrations and numerous vignettes by Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale. ◆THE BINDING VIRTUALLY AS NEW, AND THE CONTENTS JUST AS GOOD. Offered in an elegant and untouched onlaid binding, this is a deluxe edition on luxurious paper, containing some of Tennyson' best-known poems, with illustrations by a pioneering woman artist. The binding is the fine work of Bennett Book Studios, established in New York in the late 1920s by bookman and binder Whitman Bennett. This workshop established a reputation for transforming rare books sold by Bennett from drab to desirable "Bennett copies." When Bennett (1884-1968) developed health issues in the late 1940s, his son Josiah Quincy Bennett took over the bindery and ran it from 1946 to 1950. The Pre-Raphaelite-influenced illustrations here are by painter and watercolorist Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (1872-1945). She began her studies at the Crystal Palace School of Arts before being admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1897; by the following year, DNB notes, "she published her first illustrations, line drawings for Joseph Arthur Gibbs's 'A Cotswold Village' (1898)," becoming one of the few women doing commercial illustration work. Elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1901, she became the first woman member of the Institute of Painters in Oils the following year. Soon, she was a sought-after book illustrator, producing both line drawings (as here) and watercolors that would be reproduced as color plates. Although it does not bear any ex-libris, this perfectly preserved volume comes from the collection of American bibliophile and long-standing Grolier Club member David Allen Fraser (1911-2003)..

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1899. Third edition. 8vo. 1181, [1], [2, ads] pp. Publisher's green cloth, rebacked, ex-library with spine marking crudely effaced; book-plate Presentation copy, inscribed "A.J. Nellis with kind regards of Wm Osler. 5.25.00." "Osler’s textbook was the best English work on medicine of its time" (Garrison-Morton). “This book went through sixteen editions in its fifty-five years in print and gained and maintained a place in English, American, and even continental practice only comparable with that held by the treatise of Sir Thomas Watson (1843) in the preceding decades. The clear, concise, attractive presentation and the many citations from history and the classics gave it a unique place among scientific books with an essentially literary flavor” (Golden & Roland, p. 136) For a discussion of the third edition, see Richard Golden, A History of William Osler's The Principles and Practice of Medicine (Montreal, 2004), pp. 68-71. Photo-illustrated front endpapers. Frontispiece photograph. "Araki's formative years were spent in 60s Japan; a world in which all that was sexual was obscured and silenced. In order to break free from this realm of sexual complexes and denial, he began taking photographs that burst virulently out of the confines of it somber, nocturnal world. Using only his camera, he captured this world's darkness and repression, which were to become both his virtue and his vice." (Germano Celant). Corke: Printed for Eugene Swiney, 1766 Pirated Corke edition. Bound in contemporary full brown calf, with five raised bands to the spine, contrasting red calf label to the spine, lettered and decorated in gilt, board edges tooled in blind. Very good, with some wear to the extremities, light rubbing to the boards and spine, minor spotting to the fore edge, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, some minor creasing to the otherwise bright pages. Overall, a tight and unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco red slipcase with a matching chemise. This pirated edition of The Vicar of Wakefield was published in the same year as the first authorized edition that consisted of two volumes printed by R. Collins in London. The pirated Corke edition was also issued in two volumes; in the case of this copy, a previous owner had his binder combine the two parts into a single volume. The Vicar of Wakefield is a Victorian novel that is narrated by Dr. Charles Primrose, the fictional Vicar of Wakefield. Specifically, it follows the Primrose family, humble and moral in spite of its material wealth and indicative of Goldsmith's idealization of pastoral life, after they fall into poverty and subsequent dilemmas as a result, not of their own misdeeds, but of the corrupt and depraved individuals around them. One of the most highly regarded and widely read books of the eighteenth century, The Vicar of Wakefield is mentioned in several notable subsequent publications, including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), Charlotte Brontë's The Professor (1857), Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871-1872), among others.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Description
Gainesville, Tallahassee: University Press of Florida, 1021 Oblong octavo, hardcover (cloth & boards), gilt letters, xix, 125 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Through striking architectural photographs and lively, readable narrative, this pictorial account of early-twentieth-century Jacksonville tells the triumphant story of photographer Leah Mary Cox while revealing Jacksonville’s architectural history. Nearly 50 years after Cox’s death, a treasure trove of more than 4,000 glass negatives was discovered, stashed in the basement of her home. Cox’s images capture Jacksonville at the turn of the century. Ranging from the Spanish-American War and the Great Fire of 1901 to the city’s rich architectural diversity and everyday street scenes, her photographs serve as one of the most significant visual records available of Jacksonville in the early 1900s. Ann Hyman takes 61 captivating photographs from this vast collection and reconstructs an image of life in Jacksonville, weaving it together with pieces of Cox’s life to create an engaging narrative. Background insights, such as Cox’s determination to keep her family together after the death of her father and the illness of her mother, provide the reader with a sense of context for her photography. This illustrated account of Jacksonville’s architectural achievements is an incredible find for photographers, Jacksonville historians, and those interested in early photography and women’s studies.
