Description
London, 1836-50. Various editions. 224 x 137 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). 16 volumes.. FINE CONTEMPORARY FULL CALF, MOST EITHER TREE OR POLISHED CALF (see below), raised bands, spines intricately gilt in compartments, morocco labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Some works with frontispiece portraits. Front pastedowns with engraved bookplate of Edward Nicholas Hurt (see below). A LOVELY COLLECTION--WITH VIRTUALLY NO SIGNS OF USE. Handsomely bound, with beautifully gilt spines, and just about uniform in size, these volumes make an impressive appearance on the shelf. The six titles here include: 1) (DE SAUMAREZ, JAMES). ROSS, JOHN. "MEMOIRS AND CORRESPONDENCE OF ADMIRAL LORD DE SAUMAREZ." (1838) Two volumes. Polished calf. 2) (ELDON, JOHN, LORD CHANCELLOR). TWISS, HORACE. "THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIFE OF LORD CHANCELLOR ELDON." (1844) Three volumes. Polished calf. 3) HORNER, FRANCIS. "MEMOIRS AND CORRESPONDENCE OF FRANCIS HORNER, M. P." (1843) Two volumes. Tree calf. 4) STANHOPE, PHILIP DORMER. "THE LETTERS OF PHILIP DORMER STANHOPE, EARL OF CHESTERFIELD." (1845; 1853) Five volumes. Tree calf. 5) TAYLOR, WILLIAM. "THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF THE LATE WILLIAM TAYLOR OF NORWICH." (1843) Two volumes. Tree calf. 6) (WARD, ROBERT PLUMER). PHIPPS, EDMUND. "MEMOIRS OF THE POLITICAL AND LITERARY LIFE OF ROBERT PLUMER WARD, ESQ." (1850) Two volumes. Polished calf. The bookplate here is that of notable bibliophile and barrister Edward Nicholas Hurt (1795-1867) of Derbyshire and Marylebone, London. He married Caroline Strutt, daughter of the immensely wealthy philanthropist and social reformer Joseph Strutt (1765-1844), who was twice Mayor of Derby. As the Strutt arms are incorporated into the escutcheon of Hurt's ornate bookplate, the plate can be dated to no earlier than their wedding in 1828..

Erte discusses Illustrations for his Costume Book in a detailed autograph letter signed

Description
Erte comments on the illustrations chosen for his costume book in this Autograph Letter Signed, in English, two separate folio pages with a three page separate folio addendum, all on printed "Erte" stationery, Paris, France, May, 7 1979 with signed transmittal envelope. Erte critiques the illustrations to be included in "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," published in 1979 by Dover (reprinted in 2016). He gives detailed notes on the costume selection and placement to Stanley Applebaum, Editor-in-Chief at Dover. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," is a collection of 49 of Erte's exotic and historical costume designs for theater productions (and for well-known theater personalities), ballets, Folies-Bergere, and the like from 1911-1975. Included in the book are designs for a fan bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of Russian Boyar, Ceres, a mermaid, and a gypsy dancer. The published book includes changes Erte listed in our letter. For example, the cover shows a costume for Ganna Walska in "Manon," 1920. In the letter, Erte lists this work as being on p. 10, suggesting that after receiving this letter, Applebaum changed the placement of the costume design. The Gift-bearer for the show "Aladdin" at the Folies-Bergere, 1927 is in the book and in the letter is listed as being on p. 19. Erte mentions the design for the Monster from Scheherazade which is also in the book. Erte refers to Salome Estorick who wrote the book's preface. Erte writes, "I am sending you the information you asked for. To tell the truth I am not very happy about the selection of the illustrations - I think they could be much more typical of my work. First of all the design which I suppose is intended for p.1 is not a theatrical costume but an evening dress (so it has to be replaced). Then I think that there are too many costumes for Sheherazade [sic]; - I believe that four of them would be sufficient; the ones I like best are: "Monster" (p. 43), "Lady-in-waiting" (p. 44), "Shahriar" (p. 46) and "Jester (side 3). I should be very happy if you could replace the two costumes for a children ballet (p. 24 and p. 25) and the Chinese costume (p. 37) by something more effective. Would you kindly get in touch immediately with M. and Mr. Estorick at the Grovesnor Gallery in London (48 South Molton Street. Tel - 1-6290891) - they could supply you with some other designs. [Salome Estorick wrote the preface for Theatrical Costumes]. I am terribly sorry to give you so much trouble - but I really should love the new book would be as beautiful as the preceding ones you did...." He signs, "Erte." On the three page addendum, Erte lists page numbers and titles of illustrations or comments on the illustration, starting with "Side 2... Front Cover...p. 46 Side 3." A detailed letter regarding is theater costume book.

A very good copy with a few small stains on covers
Description
Caldwell, OH: The Caxton Printers, Ltd, 1936. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. A very good copy with a few small stains on covers. 8vo. Original green cloth. First edition of this play "presented with a grand salaam in the direction of Mr. Marc Connolly, author of 'The Green Pastures'..." (Author's Note). A dedication copy from the publisher to Marc Connolly, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Marc Connolly with best regards from the Idaho publisher, J. H. Gipson Caldwell, Idaho March 10, 1942." The printed dedication reads: "To Marc Connolly, Roark Bradford and the Forgotten Man." Gipson said of his mission as a printer-publisher: "Books to us never can or will be primarily articles of merchandise to be produced as cheaply as possible and to be sold like slabs of bacon or packages of cereal over the counter. If there is anything that is really worthwhile in this mad jumble we call the twentieth century, it should be books.” Laid in is a TLS by Percy Waxman of 'Cosmopolitan' forwarding the book to Connolly, "...Don't blame me for the contents as I am merely acting as a messenger to you from your admirer.

Description
Paris: J.B. Bailliere, 1824. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. 14 pp. (final page soiled). Recent sympathetic drab wrappers. Unique (?) and early catalogue of medical books belonging to the firm of J.-B. Bailliere (1797-1885) who was to become one of the most important publishers of medical and scientific books in the world. Our Bailliere stock catalogue predates by 40 years any comparable example held by the Grolier Club, and by 12 years any Bailliere auction catalogue. The present catalogue is one of Bailliere's early catalogues, issued when the shop was located at 14, rue de l'Ecole de Medecine in Paris. The catalogue lists a small portion of his stock, principally from the years 1820-1824, but with some earlier imprints (e.g. 1808). Naturally Balliere's first publication, the "Medecine legale" by Lecieux and Renard (Paris, 1819), figures prominently herein. Bailliere's expansion as a publisher ran parallel to that of the field of French medicine in general, leading the firm to eminence, with subsidiary companies in London and in Madrid. Over the decades the firm of J.B. Bailliere has published more than 4,000 works in medicine and science. § Literature: J. Jacques Dubarry, "Le premier siecle d'une des doyennes des maisons d'edition medicales et scientifiques: J.-B. Bailliere, fondee en 1818" (Paris, 1986). ¶ Cataloguer's note: No other copy dated "Aout 1824" can be located. There is a later (1825) Bailliere catalogue at Bibl. Sainte-Genevieve which contains 16 pages.
