Description
New York: Random House, 1942. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book, fresh and unread. Primary binding in black cloth, stamped in red and gilt and with a deep red topstain. Original bookstore ticket on the rear pastedown. In a price-clipped dust jacket that is otherwise in Near Fine condition with just minimal wear at the spine ends and a touch of rubbing at the corners. First issue jacket with 8 titles on the rear panel, starting with "Storm." A very handsome copy overall. Go Down, Moses comprises seven stories interconnected through their setting in Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County, with some characters appearing in multiple stories. Faulkner considered the book, like The Unvanquished (1928), to be a novel told in thematically linked episodes rather than a collection of individual works of short fiction. Over the course of the stories, Faulkner develops the history of the fictional McCaslin family - a mixed-race family split into two branches, one white and one Black - as they experience Mississippi history over the course of several generations. The stories explore legacy, race, the complex emotional dynamics between men as sons and fathers, and the growth of Faulkner's imagined Mississippi community over more than a century. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description
London: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1798. First edition. Near Fine. Bound to style in modern half calf over modern boards, with morocco and gilt label to spine. Renewed endpapers. Measuring 210 x 125mm. Collating viii, 518, [2]: complete, including final leaf of adverts. Small paper flaw to margin of 509-510 not affecting text and faint dampstain to upper margin of preliminaries, else a pleasing and clean copy internally. ESCT reports 15 libraries with copies (8 of those in the U.S.), and it does not appear in the modern auction record. Currently this is the only copy on the market. Notable for being an eyewitness account of Revolutionary France from the perspective of a woman, at a time when "British travellers to Paris were steeped in the highly emotional culture of sensibility...in pursuit of the picturesque" (Thompson). While Louise Elisa Beaumont had an interest in the beauty of French urban culture, the principle focus of her work was how the French people, their cultural institutions, and their city landscapes were being reshaped by "an earthquake on society." An educated Englishwoman married to a Swiss author and illustrator, Beaumont kept a keen eye on how shifts in political thought affected art and antique markets -- and what these shifts implied about the violence and changing lifestyles that the French would be confronting longterm. "On the quays," she writes at one point, "I found that many valuable articles were now to be purchased for a mere trifle...articles that once decorated the apartments of their murdered or emigrated nobles." As she and her husband traveled the Continent to relocate to his native country, Beaumont reported what she saw to a female friend in a series of 31 letters that became the basis for this book. Because the British upperclasses had been frequent travelers to France prior to the Revolution, an account like Beuamont's could strike a deep chord, presenting to them a very different picture of the places that had for much of their lives been familiar. "My sensations on entering this capital of the French Republic I can but feebly describe...It is a new Paris...I could not but reflect that, which French delicacy and sentiment objected to the representation of murder in their tragical dramas, in the real tragedy of the revolution they have not manifested the least reluctance at seeing torrents of blood flow..." She reports on the blood stained Tuillieres Palace, and the rapid changes happening at the Luxembourg. And she recounts how Austrian prisoners of war are being held in Dijon. Yet she also draws attention to how these social shifts, how wartime violence, affects women's lives. In Paris, while some women surge the streets hawking political pamphlets and war trophies, the nuns of St. Vincent, "young and handsome had totally given themselves to the care of attending the sick and the indigent." The sisters, though "the revolution had annihilated them as an order and deprived them of their possessions" turn their energies to assisting those so often affected by but forgotten in conflict. And outside the city, "the females of Breteuil, who, like the generality of their sex, when once irritated are not soon appeased" decide to respond to the occupation of their church by soldiers. To this end, they "sallied forth one fine morning, completely armed with female weapons such as spits brooks, sticks, and brickbats [to assail] the principal church door...In they rushed, and without further ceremony turned out those who were in it." A valuable and scarce example of a woman observing how revolution affects men and women, local and international communities. ESTC T117774. Near Fine.

Description
London: The Curwen Press for Arthur Ackermann, 1982. Coloured offset-lithograph by the Curwen Press, signed in pencil by the artist (lower right just beneath the image). In pristine condition. A very fine signed print from the one of the greatest bird artists of the 20th century. Sir Peter Scott was best known in later life for his work as a founding member and chairman of the World Wildlife Fund, but in "the period before and after the war, Peter Scott became undoubtedly the most popular artist in the United Kingdom" (J. Ford, Ackermann 1783-1983, 1983, p.202). The son of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Peter initially turned to wildlife art as an extension of his early love of wildfowling. He traveled the world, hunting and painting rare birds. He held his first one-man exhibition at Ackermann's in 1933, and from the late 1930s onwards became increasingly concerned with conserving wildfowl rather than hunting them. The present image is a print from a painting completed in 1940. By this time Sir Peter had given up hunting completely. From 1946, in tandem with a series of highly successful shows at Ackermann's, Sir Peter founded and ran the Wildfowl Trust which has gone on to become a major force in the conservation of endangered duck and geese. From 1935 up until about 1983, Ackermann's published a limited number of colour prints of Sir Peter's work. Many of the original oils are in major private and public collections, and these prints, signed by the artist himself, offer a rare chance to own an image by one of the greatest bird artists of the 20th century.

ca 1756. UNIQUE 18TH CENTURY LEATHER BOUND VOLUME WITH OVER 500 PAGES OF HAND SCRIPT CONTAINING COPIES OF CONTEMPORARY PUBLISHED MEDICAL PAPERS IN FRENCH AND LATIN. 6 1/2 inches tall hardcover, contemporary full leather binding, spine with raised bands, gilt compartments, faded gilt red leather labels, edges stained red. Light wear to edges of covers and spine, small wormholes margins of covers and top of pages, not affecting text. Pages are consecutively numbered in ink from 1 to 524. Each page is filled with about 25 lines of neat ink script, most in French, some in Latin. The contents represent hand copies of 18th century European medical papers, apparently entered by different scribes. The first paper is recorded as, " Recherches sur la force de l'imagination de femmes enceinte sur le fœtus a l'occasion d'un chien extraordinaire " par M. Eller, acad. de Berlin tom XII, 1756. [Research on the strength of pregnant women's imagination on the fetus on the exposure to an extraordinary dog]. The title of the original published paper reads " monstruous " rather than " extraordinary ". JOHANN THEODOR ELLER (1689-1760) was a major physician of the 18th century: chemist , Prussian military doctor and from 1735 personal physician under Frederick William I and Frederick II. This is followed by papers by Meckel, Fothergill, Roderer and Monro. JOHANN FRIEDRICH MECKEL (1781–1833) was a German anatomist born in Halle. He worked as a professor of anatomy, pathology and zoology at the University of Halle, Germany. JOHN FOTHERGILL (1712–1780) was an English physician, plant collector, philanthropist and Quaker. JOHANN GEORG ROEDERER (1726–1763) was a German physician and obstetrician who was a native of Strasbourg. He studied medicine at Leiden, Paris and London, and became the first professor of obstetrics at the University of Göttingen. ALEXANDER MONRO (1697–1767) was the founder of Edinburgh Medical School. To distinguish him as the first of three generations of physicians of the same name, he is known as primus.

Description
NY: The Macmillan Company, 1923. First Edition, first printing. Signed by Baynes of the front endpaper. From the Preface: “Every incident described in this life of Polaris actually took place, and almost everyone is recounted exactly as it occurred. [Dogs] do not possess such [human] intelligence, they possess canine intelligence and this often serves them better, probably, than would our own." The forebears of Polaris were on Adm. Robert Edwin Peary Sr.’s mushing team to the North Pole. Peary was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. "Introduction" by Capt. Robert A. Bartlett, who sailed the "Roosevelt" for Peary, and the "Karluk" for Vilhjjalmur Stefansson. Bartlett called Polaris "the finest Eskimo dog in the world." Ernest Harold Baynes [1868–1925] was an American naturalist. He was "the closest thing New England, and the world for that matter, will ever get to a real-life Doctor Doolittle; all sorts of New England birds and animals: foxes, wolves, chickadees, bears and bison were known to roam around and in and out of his house"- New England Historical Society. He treated animals like friends, but unlike Doolittle, never claimed to talk to them. He was instrumental in bringing to public attention the near demise of songbirds and of the bison. Small 8vo., pictorial green cloth, stamped in white; 137 pages. I have never seen a dust jacket for this book and one dealer's listing said it was issued without one, which I find hard to believe, especially from a major publishing house like Macmillan. Plus, the discoloration to the endpapers appears to be caused by the flaps of a dust jacket. Illustrations From Photographs By Louise Birt Baynes, John R. Baynes, and the Author.. Very Good (little wear covers, contents clean & tight with some browning endpapers and tiny bump to corners of text for a few beginning pages).
