Description
1954. in German, black ink. Signed “A. Einstein”. A poem written by Einstein to his colleague and collaborator Ernst Straus and his son Daniel. “Dear Strausse both! My best wishes and greetings in poetic form. It brings even more happiness If it has been anticipated for so long also in one’s circle of friends the event is doubly appreciated. This is what I wish: Let Daniel be like his father thoroughly intelligent and not less joyous so few humans are like that. Many - alas - are born few are chosen to bring light and joy. Let such gift be his drive. Yours, A. Einstein” In German, “Strauss” means bunch, bouquet, etc., or ostrich and “Strausse” is plural. Ernst G. Straus (1922-1983) was a mathematician who helped found the theories of Euclidean Ramsey theory and of the arithmetic properties of analytic functions. He was Einstein’s assistant and collaborator both at Princeton and afterwards when he moved to become a professor of mathematics at UCLA. His son Daniel is a professor of chemistry at Cal State San Jose.

Description
various places: various publishers, v.d.. First Editions.. full contemporary calf.. A very good copy; joints cracked; Vince is toned throughout; Moyes pamphlets have a stain on the title.. 8vo. There are 3 engraved plates. A nonce collection of 18th century English science that contains the following: 1] - Thomas Beddoes : Observations on the Nature of Demonstrative Evidence; with an explanation of certain difficulties occurring in the elements of geometry: and reflections on language, London, J Johnson, 1793; 2] - Matthew Young : An Enquiry into the Principal Phaenomena of Sounds and Musical Strings, Dublin, J HIll, 1784, 2 plates; 3] - Samuel Vince : A Plan of a Course of Lectures on the Principles of Natural Philosophy, Cambridge, J Archdeacon, 1793, 1 plate; 4] - Henry Moyes : Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on the Philosophy of Natural History, no place, no date [ London ca 1780 ?] with ms. notes and ink corrections to the title page; 5] - Henry Moyes : Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on the Philosophy of Chemistry, no place, no date [ London ca. 1780 ?] with ms. notes and corrections to the title page. The Beddoes tract is a lengthy exegesis on the philosophy of mathematical proofs. Appended to it are two essays on the Greek language and grammar that comment on Schultens, Hemsterhuis, Monboddo, and Tooke (see Aarsleff, The Study on Language ....). Young's Enquiry is a commentary on one of the propositions in Newton's Principia . Young's book is in two sections. The first deals with the physical nature of sound. The second is on musical strings and an intensive study of the motion of elastic fibers, harmonics, sympathetic tones etc (see Kassler II, 1085 - `87) . Vince's tract was written after he was appointed to give the Plumian Lectures at Cambridge. They pre-date his massive System that appeared over 11 yrs. beginning in 1797. The two syllabi of Moyes are outlines for his private series of lectures. Neville (II, 196) refers to a copy with a similar title calling it 'very rare'. Moyes traveled to England in 1779 and stayed about six years lecturing all the while to earn a living. These outlines are his only publication. The manuscript notations on the title of each denote times, fee, and the place. Given that Moyes was blind and the hand very clear within confined margins it is unlikely that the notes are in his hand.

Yeats was engaged in revising the text of this edition of his poems, of which he had corrected the proofs, and for which he had signed the special page to appear at the beginning of Volume I. The outbreak of the Second World War, however, came at a crucial stage in the production of the work, and Messrs. Macmillan & Co. Ltd. had to consider the effects of austere conditions on a publication which had been projected on a lavish scale and which, after the untimely death of this great writer, would have formed a worthy monument to him. It was finally decided that production should be discontinued until after the war, and it is only now, a decade later, that it has become possible to offer the work as it was originally planned" (from the Prospectus for this work). Description
46 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: [early Edo period]. A collection of poetry by “one of the most influential figures of the Japanese court poetry tradition” (Burton Watson, trans., Saigyō: Poems of a Mountain Home [Columbia: 1991], p. 2). These poems were written at a time of social unrest and political change, when the imperial system of rule that had characterized the Heian period was superseded by the rule of warrior shoguns in Kamakura. This atmosphere is said to have influenced Saigyō’s poetry. We believe that our book is an edition, possibly abridged, of Sankashū 山家集, the “Mountain Home Collection,” also known as Saigyō hōshi kashū, another title seen on many books and manuscripts. “The poems are arranged by topic, beginning with sections devoted to the four seasons, followed by a group of love poems, and ending with a section entitled ‘Miscellaneous’ that has apparently been added to at a later date and represents a catchall for poems that do not fit easily into other categories...The Sankashū appears to contain the bulk of Saigyō’s poems written up to about 1180” (Watson, pp. 13-14). “Saigyō started out in life under the name Satō Norikiyo, the son of a well-to-do warrior family that was a branch of the eminent Fujiwara clan. He was born in 1118 in Kyoto, the capital of Heian period Japan, where his father held a military post. As a young man he received training in the martial arts and became a retainer to the Tokudaiji family, another branch of the Fujiwara clan” (Watson, p. 2). In 1140, Saigyō quit this life to become a Buddhist monk. He assumed the name Saigyō, “Western Journey,” probably as a reference to the journey to the Western Paradise of Amida Buddha, where believers would be reborn and where they could more easily attain enlightenment than in this world. Saigyō lived as a recluse for much of the time but also travelled extensively around Japan. He died in 1190. The colophon mentions the year 1348, possibly the date of the manuscript from which our book was copied. Fine copy, but with thumbing, light dampstaining, and some worming. Preserved in a chitsu. ❧ William R. LaFleur, Awesome Nightfall: The Life, Times, and Poetry of Saigō (Wisdom Publications: 2003)–“Japan’s foremost ‘Buddhist’ poet.”.

Description
Tombaugh draws the diameters of Earth and Mars to illustrate the planets' comparative sizes. Earth's diameter is 7900 miles against Mars diameter of 4215 miles. On his Mars diagram, Tombaugh draws what would seem to be his understanding of the pitted Martian surface. His observations of Mars led him to conclude that Mars had been hit by asteroids causing observable craters due to the planet's proximity to the asteroid belt. The Mariner 4 space probe affirmed his hypotheses. The astronomer best known for identifying Pluto has signed, "Clyde W . Tombaugh" in a bold hand. A fine, visually instructive illustration. The asteroid 1604 Tombaugh discovered in 1931 is named after him. He discovered 14 asteroids, beginning with 2839 Annette in 1929, mostly as a byproduct of his search for Pluto and his further searches for other celestial objects.

Description
Bakersfield, California, 1961. 12¾" x 12¼". Embossed imitation leather over boards, disbound scrapbook. 36 pages with 70 mostly black and white photographs and around 40 items of ephemera either pasted or laid in. Photos measure from to 3½" x 3½" to 3¼" x 4¼" and about half are captioned; some of the ephemera captioned with context as well. Album good: disbound with toned leaves; photographs generally near fine or better, ephemera very good or better; lacking two photos. The Kern County Hot Jazz Society was founded in Bakersfield, California in July 1961. The group's purpose was for"Families [to] meet and enjoy modern Jazz music and playing music together" and their motto was "A Non-Profit Organization for the Prevention of Rock-And-Roll and Progressive Jazz. " This scrapbook documents the formation and progression of the KCHJS throughout 1961. It includes at least 30 performance photos, many noted with date and location. Other images show them participating in a parade and engaging in social gatherings. The ephemera includes eight mimeographed handbills on card stock promoting the organization and its meetings. Letters include correspondence between founding members and Jazz Report. One small typescript shows what transpired at their first meeting, and numerous news clippings trace their meetings, performances and advertisements. We're not sure how long the organization lasted. Archived internet news reports regarding them disappear after 1962. According to the Austin Traditional Jazz Society's website, there are at least 27 extant jazz societies in California as of 2015. A unique visual record of one of their forebears. Live performances of the KCHJS may be found online. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Paris: C. Marpon et E. Flammarion Éditeurs, 1883. First Edition. Two volumes; 12mo (18cm.); contemporary brown morocco-backed marbled boards, gilt-lettered spines in five compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges speckled; xxiv,273; 312pp. Boards a bit scuffed especially to leather, leather rather dried with some shallow chipping at spine ends, spine gilt almost entirely effaced, textblock uniformly toned, contemporary ownership signatures to both title pages, else a Very Good, sound set. Posthumously published work compiled of notes taken in the 1850s during Napoleon's reign as Monarch of France. Proudhon, known as the father of anarchism, had already spent three years in prison, from 1849 to 1852, for insulting Napoleon (at the time President of France) and the present study of early Christianity draws comparisons to the present political climate, describing a "Napoleon-Caesar as a despot who maintained his hegemony through corruption, cunning and terror. The multitude of people was reduced to an ignorant and miserable mass" (George l. Mosse, "Caeserism, Circuses, and Monuments," in "Journal of Contemporary History," Vol. 6, no. 2, p. 169).

New York: Harold Vinal, Ltd, 1928. First Edition. Slim octavo (16cm); grey paper-covered boards, with red printing, in grey and red dustwrapper; 54pp. Dustwrapper verso taped at joints and extremities with kraft paper; toning, smudging and soiling, with minor creases. Dampstain to upper extremities of boards and textblock; gentle handling wear. Unusually, a slip of paper with a "Bruce Humphries, Inc." imprint is tipped in over the publisher's information on the title page. Boards and copyright page show "Harold Vinal" as publisher; dustwrapper identifies "Bruce Humphries, Inc."; presumed remainder issue. Overall Very Good. During a 1938 Writer's Club lecture, the extremely prolific author-of-many-trades Clement Wood once reported that he wrote, on average, 1,250,000 words a year. The ones within this little volume were obviously reserved for an impassioned tribute to his second wife, Gloria Goddard (pseud. Louise Logan; she penned the popular wartime "Susan Merton" books); the two remained married until his death in 1950.

Description
London: The Argonaut Press, 1938. #86 of an edition limited to 475 copies.. 27 cm; 2 volumes. Color printed device on title pages, color folding map frontispieces in both volumes. Numerous color illustrations, facsimiles, and maps. Bound in 1/4 vellum over brick-red cloth, with Frobisher crest stamped in colors on upper board of both volumes. Deckled edges. Rare original slipcase present. Cloth bubbling a bit where it meets the vellum spines, as usual in this edition. Tiny abrasion on upper board of volume 1, else unblemished and about fine! Martin Frobisher (d.1594) was an English seaman and privateer who made three voyages to the New World in search of a Northwest Passage. All landed in northeastern Canada, around the southern tip of Baffin Island. Frobisher there began mining what he thought was gold, what was proved to be gold upon assaying in London, but that later turned out to be only iron pyrite, thrown down onto roads as paving. It was not the end, however, as Frobisher distinguished himself in battle against the Spanish Armada.
