Description
1798. [BIGGS, CHARLOTTE]. A Residence in France, during the Years 1792, 1793, 1794, and 1795; Described in a Series of Letters from an English Lady: with General and Incidental Remarks on the French Character and Manners. Prepared for the Press by John Gifford, Esq. ... First American Edition. Elizabeth Town: Shepard Kollock, for Cornelius Davis, New York, 1798. 517 p. Contemporary sheep. Spine shabby and broken, early library markings. Though attributed for nearly two hundred years to English poet and historical writer Helen Maria Williams, two recently discovered letters from Charlotte Biggs to Sir David Ochterlony reveal that Biggs was the author. See Marius Kociejowski, ed., The Testament of Charlotte B. (Marlborough, Eng., 1988), p. 61. The work was first published in London in 1797 and seen through the press by John Richards Green, who wrote under the pen name of "John Gifford."
