Carteret, III, pp. 577-78; Ray, "French" 176. ◆Perhaps half the leaves in volume I lightly browned and/or faintly mottled due to paper stock (second volume unaffected and quite bright), trivial foxing here and there, but the two volumes obviously very little used, and THE BINDINGS IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION--the leather and gilt remarkably bright, the spines unfaded, and the pair making a lovely appearance on the shelf. Offered here in beautiful "Cathedral-Style" bindings that are entirely fitting for the contents, these two works allegedly contain the poetry of a 15th century noblewoman--but were in fact part of a long-lived literary hoax. The purported author of these poems was Clotilde de Surville (ca. 1405-98), who, we are told, was an educated noblewoman, and gifted in the art of poetry. Widowed at just 23, Surville wrote mostly on themes of love, loss, heroism, and war. Her "Poésies," first published in 1803, was supposedly based on a manuscript of her work that had been discovered and transcribed by a descendent. Although many critics dismissed it as a contemporary forgery, something about the story of the widowed poetess captured the public's imagination. A second volume of her work, titled "Poésies Inédite," was published in 1826, allegedly based on yet another manuscript that had been "found"--this time by one of the editors. Although the present two volumes of Surville's work were published three years apart and are often advertised for sale alone, they were clearly meant to be companion volumes: both were printed by the same publisher, in the same size and typeface, and contain engravings by Colin. Ray calls the first work "one of the most lavish productions of the period," and notes that "Nepveu saw to it that prospective purchasers had several options with regard to paper and illustrations." The romantic and gothic elements of the contents pair perfectly with the binding style here. Deriving its name from the use of design motifs taken from gothic architecture, the so-called "Cathedral Binding" (or "Cathedral-Style Binding") was fashionable in England and France for about three decades, beginning ca. 1810. In France the design was usually blocked, while in England it was typically accomplished with gilt tooling. The French binder Joseph Thouvenin is sometimes credited with popularizing the style. With the death in 1831 of Charles Hering Jr., the Hering bindery was carried on by his brothers James and Henry, the former being head of the workshop. Frédéric Guillaume Muller (d. 1836) then joined the Herings from 1830 to 1834, after which he purchased the tools of the recently deceased Thouvenin, set up business for himself, and gained recognition on his own, earning the bronze medal for work shown at the 1834 exhibition. As can be seen here, the short-lived Hering & Muller portion of the business produced bindings characterized by the same elegance and care in execution evident in the work of earlier iterations of the Hering firm..

Paris: Pierre Lafitte & Gie, [1910]. 12mo (189 x 120 mm), (6), 520 pp. Untrimmed in the original publisher's four-color illustrated wrappers; upper wrapper and backstrip sunned, slight crease in lower wrapper, an astonishingly well preserved copy of a fragile book. ß First edition of the Phantom of the Opera, a rare copy in original wrappers of the French gothic horror novel that became the basis of the longest running show in Broadway history, the second-longest running West End musical, and over $6 billion in worldwide ticket sales. LeRoux was a French journalist and mystery writer, inspired by real events at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris and by a love of Edgar Allen Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. The story was first published in serial form in Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910, and was later translated and serialized in both England and America. Stage and film adaptations followed, but it was Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical (a project which only took off when found and read a copy of LeRoux's original novel), which made the Phantom a household name. The original 1986 production starring Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and Steven Barton, won multiple awards, and West End performances continued uninterrupted until the Covid pandemic of 2020. In the United States, the Phantom retains the title of the longest running Broadway show with 13,981 performances between 1988 and 2023. First edition with "fatal rocher" for "fatal nocher" on page 400. Fictitious mention of the "30th edition" at the back of the half-title and the "21st edition" on the wrapper. Other issues stating 12th and 20th editions are seen but the true number of printings in 1910 is unknown and likely much lower.

Quarto, eleven titles, bound in full contemporary plain calf, spine label, binding somewhat worn and scuffed, with the remains of the engraved armorial bookplate of Barto[lomew] Will[iam] Gilbert Esq., handwritten date on the title page of first item above text of January 23 1764. The Church of Ireland was the reformed, established state church in Ireland until 1871, authorized by the Irish Parliament of 1534-37, under Henry VIII. The eighteenth century was a period when the constitutional privileges of the established church of Ireland were further secured by laws against Catholics and Dissenters, though the church, a minority throughout the country, was not immune to feelings of insecurity and well into the following century resisted government moves towards toleration as undermining the Protestant nature of the state. Even 'high church' clergy, deeply conscious of the need to preserve the prerogatives of the church as against state. Looked to the government to support the church's mission to promote morality and fight infidelity, Popery, and dissent. The changing intellectual climate of the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century Europe made the position of the minority Church of Ireland increasingly untenable, as did British political necessity. The government increasingly sought to appease Catholic opinion by major concessions, particularly in education and the tithe system, and by addressing by legislation the growing anomalies presented by an established church that was slow to reform its own structures, in which wealth was inequitably distributed, and some of whose evangelizing societies were engaged in proselytizing activities. The volume includes the 1733 royal charter establishing the Irish Charter Schools. Irish Charter Schools were operated by The Incorporated Society in Dublin for Promoting English Protestant Schools in Ireland. The Charter Schools admitted only Catholics, under the condition that they be educated as Protestants. These schools were intended, in their own words, "to rescue the souls of thousands of poor children from the dangers of Popish superstition and idolatry, and their bodies from the miseries of idleness and beggary." In 1731 Hugh Boulter, Primate of Armagh, submitted the findings of the Inquiry into Illegal Popish Schools by the House of Lords, which was set up "to prevent the growth of Popery, and to secure this Kingdom from any dangers from the great Number of Papists in this Nation." He advocated a school system "to teach the children of the papists the English tongue, and the principles of the Christian religion," as long as they converted to Protestantism. The same year, the archbishops and bishops of the Established Church in Ireland, among others, petitioned George II for a charter to set up schools where the children of Irish Catholics would be given free instruction in the English language and the Protestant religion. Boys would learn a trade and girls domestic skills and might even be given a marriage portion – assuming they remained Protestant. At this time the Penal Laws were in full force: the Catholic clergy was outlawed, and no Catholic was permitted "publicly or in private houses teach school, or instruct youth in learning>, so there was no source of education for Catholics. The charter was granted in 1733 and the king promised £ 1000 per annum. The first school was opened at Castledermot on 20 acres of land donated by the Earl of Kildare. Over the following decades further finance was provided by the British government. The school system was overseen by a Committee of Fifteen who met weekly in Suffolk St. in Dublin. However, the numbers attending fell far short of expectations, despite various stratagems resorted to keep up the intake of children, such as taking beggar children off the streets and taking in orphan babies. In the 1780s large discrepancies between the numbers reported to be at the schools, and the actual number found there were found and reported by John Howard, FRS. At that time there were 41 schools and four nurseries in the system. The schools were viewed with the deepest suspicion by Catholics. John Wesley visited the school at Ballinrobe in 1785, where he found children being kept in atrocious conditions. Inspections towards the end of the century showed massive abuse of the system, many children receiving little instruction but being used mainly as farm laborers or weavers and subject to squalid conditions, punishment and disease. The reputations and population of the schools continued to decrease from the turn of the 19th century until they waned in the middle of the century.
