Description
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1911 First American edition, first printing. Publisher's blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt; original orange dust jacket, printed in black, with "How to open a book" notice to front flap and advertisement for The Ne'er-Do-Well by Rex Beach to rear flap. Near fine book, with a hint of rubbing to spine ends, a touch of soiling to bottom of front board, a few small spots of soiling to front endpapers, contemporary inscription to front free endpaper, a small spot of soiling to fore edge of text block, and light offsetting to pp. 100-101; with parts of the original dust jacket, including entire rear panel and rear flap, three-fourths of spine (upper portion, with title, missing), one-third of front panel (bottom left portion), with front flap detached but present: parts of dust jacket that are present have just a few small closed tears. Overall, a lovely copy, with a sizable portion of the exceedingly scarce original dust jacket. In Under Western Eyes, a Geneva-based English teacher of languages - the story's "Western eyes" - gives an account of Razumov, a Russian student in the early 1910s who aspires to secure a middle-class position in the czarist system. Razumov faces an internal crisis when he betrays the trust of a revolutionary student who assassinated the Minister of State and is then ordered to spy on the student's family. Conrad wrote Under Western Eyes after the failed Russian Revolution of 1905, and it gained a new audience after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The book is often seen as a response to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment (1866) as it addresses many of the same themes.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Very good plus.
Description
Chicago: Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, 1914. Very good plus.. Folding map, 13.25 x 19 inches. Original patriotic card wrappers. Very minor wear and dust soiling to wraps. Small separation from top edge, repaired with tape on blank verso. An odd and scarce map that details American understanding of the situation in Mexico during the Revolution of the 1910s. Starting with a garden-variety Rand-McNally map of the country, an entrepreneurial employee has made extensive use of red overprinting to show the "chief centers of the rebellion and names of leaders," the "principal garrisons of Federal-Mexican troops in the North," major American forts along the border, and the positions of American and Mexican naval vessels. Several columns of text that replace the inset map of Mexico City and its surroundings in the original enumerate American and Mexican military forces. The map was likely produced in mid- to late 1914, as it seems to show both the Tampico Affair (April 9) and the subsequent occupation of Veracruz (April 21 to November 23). The overall impression is that the United States was using its overwhelming force to play a major role in the Revolution, when it was in fact largely an internal affair. The map was issued as a promotional by the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railway, whose system extended no further south than Kansas City; even more strangely, they have added patriotic wrappers featuring the Stars and Stripes and the lyrics to "America" and "The Star Spangled Banner." OCLC locates copies at just four institutions.

Description
California, 1892. Albumen photograph on board, very good contrast, mount near fine with minimal wear. A photograph of Main St. in San Andreas in 1892, showing banners for the Democratic ticket of Grover Cleveland and Adlai E. Stevenson and the Republican ticket of Benjamin Harrison and Whitelaw Reid hanging above the street. Despite Cleveland’s national victory, the Republican incumbent Harrison narrowly carried California’s electoral votes, as discontent—especially among farmers and laborers—boosted support for the People’s (Populist) Party in California, splitting the anti-Republican vote. San Andreas, the county seat of Calaveras County, was adapting to the post-boom economy during the period. The photograph shows the local merchants, who, along with assay offices and transport links to larger markets, supported the town’s transition to smaller-scale hard rock and quartz mining as larger-scale placer operations dwindled.

Description
Chicago: The Bookfellows, 1921. First Edition. Sewn wrappers; thin 12mo. 16 pp. Inscribed by the poet to Will Ransom, with Ransom's small bookplate on the back cover verso. Presumably Williams' first book as he also won the Yale Younger Poet Award in the same year, but that is not mentioned in the preliminaries. Covers mostly split, but binding cord holding, and else very good. Common title, scarce signed, and in this case a good association. Ransom was a noted typographer and book designer, and well known for his bibliographic work on private presses. The Bookfellows of which both Ransom and Williams seemed to belong was a Chicago literary society founded by George and Flora Steele both themselves authors.
