Description
This noted Montana-born children's book author/illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" (her first book, 1929) and her popular "Kristie" series as well as many other illustrated titles: "To Market! To Market!" (1930), "Till Potatoes Grow on Trees" (1938), "Too Fast for John" (1940), "The Topsy-Turvy Family" (1943), "The Greedy Goat" (1944), "Drusilla" (1963) and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink-and-watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King," published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930, when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 heavy onion skin leaves (each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top), approximately 11½" X 14½", 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings (six signed by Brock at lower margin) and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings each bearing hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption (which often differs from that which appears in the published book). Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling (most about edges) and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book, some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins, including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent, present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well, along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work.

OFFPRINT IN FRENCH OF WRIGHT BROTHERS REPORT RECORDING THE LONGEST FLIGHT AT THE TIME 8vo, pp. (1-3) 4-7 (8 blank). In original printed publisher's wrappers. Printed advertisements on back cover. Ink stamp "From the private library of Orville Wright" on title page, signature of H. A. Miller. Uncut. A fine copy of the first French edition of Wright brothers' report from March 12, 1906 to the secretary of the recently created Aero Club of America, recording the longest flight in history at the time. This French edition was published the same year that the Wright brothers traveled to Europe in an effort to secure monopoly on air travel and negotiate for the sale of the Wright airplane. In 1908, the Wright brothers would return to Europe to perform 200 demonstrative flights. The report summarizes the last stage of the brothers' flying experiments, which began in 1899 and allowed them to develop a plane, capable of making routine flights. Upon completing their experiments in Dayton, Ohio in the fall of 1905, the brothers did not fly again for 2.5 years, focusing their attention on securing a patent, which they were granted in May 1906. In the report, the brothers write that the flights of 1905, made "in a swampy meadow about 8 miles east of Dayton, Ohio, and continued from June until the early days of October," were meant to correct some problems, "necessary to overcome before it would be safe to employ flyers for practical purposes." The experiments proved successful: "Owing to frequent experimental changes in the machine and the resulting differences in its management, the earlier flights were short; but, towards the middle of September means of correcting the obscure troubles were found, and the flyer was at last brought under satisfactory control." The report includes a chart documenting the brothers' progress: on October 5, Wilbur made his longest flight, in which he circled the field 30 times in 39 minutes. The report also summarizes the brothers' experiments prior to 1905: "Previous to the year 1905 we had experimented at Kitty Hawk, North Caroline, with man-carrying gliding machines in the years 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903... Flights to the number of more than 100 had also been made at Dayton, Ohio, in 1904..." This copy sold at Sotheby's for $4,375 in 2008. We were able to locate only two copies worldwide: in the U.S. at MIT and at the Bibliothque nationale de France. * Published Writings of Wilbur and Orville Wright, p. 6.

Description
Boston: Anti-Slavery Bazaar, 1849. Small broadside measuring 7 ¾ x 4 ½ inches printed on green wove paper. Some creases and a small tear at margin, near fine. Near Fine. The American Anti-Slavery Society hosted annual bazaars, which served as fundraisers, with money going to supporting the National Anti-Slavery Standard newspaper. Many women were involved with the event, and sold abolitionist items. Offered here is one such piece of ephemera from the 1849 fair, a poem written by an unknown author with the pen name “M.” The poem was featured in the poetry section of The Liberator (January 26, 1849, Vol. XIX. No. 4.) with the description “The two following poetical effusions were written for the Anti-Slavery Bazaar, In Faneuil Hall, by friends of freedom in the old world.” It reads: Ye friends of liberty, all hail! May your endeavours never fail In freedom’s sacred cause! May blessings e’er attend your course, In striving to uproot all force, And stern oppression’s laws! Yours is a noble task, my friends! And God his gracious favor lends To speed ye on your way, Until you reach the blessed goal, When ev’ry dark, benighted soul, Shall hail bright freedom’s ray. Oh! may he speed the time when all Their fellow-men shall brethren call, And the deep wrong remove, When the dark chains of slavery, Give place to sacred liberty, And bonds of holy love! Oh! it were happiness to bind In such bright chains all human kind, And set each captive free; For when oppressions all shall cease, And this fair world be fill’d with peace, Like Heav’n on earth ‘twill be! A very nice example of the anti-slavery movement during this period. Uncommon, with one copy appearing at auction, and none listed in OCLC.
