Description
London: Apud Guil. & Joh. Innys, 1726. Full Description: NEWTON, [Sir] Isaac. Philosophiæ naturalis principia mathematica. Editio tertia aucta & emendata. London: Apud Guil. & Joh. Innys, 1726. Third edition. One of only 1250 copies printed. Quarto. [34], 530, [6, index] pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait (facing title) by George Vertue after I. Vanderbank. Bound without the advertisement leaf. Numerous diagrams in the text and one engraving of cometary orbit on p. 506. Title printed in red and black. With the Royal Privilege printed on verso of the first leaf as in Babson copy 2. In full goatskin. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards paneled in blind. Inner hinges repaired. Some old ink manuscript notes on front flyleaf. Numerous instances of light early pencil marginalia and a few in ink. Some ghost dampstaining throughout. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. "This edition was the last published during the author's lifetime and the basis of all subsequent editions. It was edited by Henry Pemberton, M.D., F.R.S., and contains a new preface by Newton and a large number of alterations, the most important being the scholium on fluxions, in which Leibnitz had been mentioned by name. This had been considered an acknowledgement of Leibnitz's independent discovery of the calculus. In omitting Leibnitz's name in this edition, Newton was criticized as taking advantage of an opponent whose death had prevented any reply" (Babson, p. 12). Third edition of "the greatest work in the history of science" (Printing and the Mind of Man). In the Principia, Newton formulated the three laws of motion from which he derived the principle of universal gravitation, "wherein all bodies, of whatever mass, attract one another in proportion to their masses and in inverse ratio as the square of the distance between them. This applies to dust particles as to the mightiest celestial bodies" (Dibner). "Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws. The Principia provided the great synthesis of the cosmos, proving finally its physical unity. Newton showed that the important and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, within a single physical theory...The same laws of gravitation and motion rule everywhere; for the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens. The whole cosmos is composed of inter-connecting parts influencing each other according to these laws. It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equalled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species" (Printing and the Mind of Man 161, describing the first edition). Babson 13. Gray 9. Wallis 9. HBS 69561. $22,500.

Description
Moguntiae [Mainz]: Balthasaar Lippius, 1599. 266 x 185 mm. (10 1/2 x 7 1/4"). 16 p.l., 323, [1] pp. CONTEMPORARY BLIND-STAMPED PIGSKIN over bevelled wooden boards, UPPER COVER WITH THE ARMS OF WOLFGANG VON DALBERG, ARCHBISHOP-ELECTOR OF MAINZ stamped in black at center, the world "AGENDA" stamped above it and the date 1599 below, the arms enclosed by blind-rule and decorative roll (lattice-work, medallion portraits) frames, lower cover similarly framed, with three vertical bands at center (lattice-work flanked by palmettes), raised bands, two brass catchplates, one clasp, remnants of a second strap (lower cover with small hole in the original pigskin, with the tooling continuing onto the wood beneath it). With the archbishop's arms on verso of title page, decorative woodcut initials printed in red, two nearly full-page woodcuts, one of the Crucifixion and one a chart of consanguinity, and with 31 pages containing printed music. Printed in black and red, in roman (for Latin) and Fraktur (for German) type. Front pastedown with red ink ownership inscription: "Wolfgangus Dei Gratia Archiepiscopus Moguntius Princeps Elector Anno D[omi]ni 1599." VD16 A 720; USTC 609582. Corners rubbed to boards, pigskin somewhat soiled, text with a minor spot here and there, but quite an excellent copy--clean and fresh internally, the binding entirely solid, with no other significant wear, and with the coat of arms quite distinct. Handsomely bound with the author's coat of arms, this is a guidebook for the clergy of the archdiocese of Mainz, giving the preferred text for the various services, sacraments, exhortations, and benedictions. The table of moveable feasts covers the years 1599 to 1633, and the calendar gives the saints' days to be celebrated in local churches. The liturgical text is, of course, in Latin, but there are sections of text in German, so that the words can be clearly understood by the laity. These include blessings, penitence, absolution, prayers for the sick, and extreme unction, all printed in Fraktur type. Wolfgang X. von Dalberg (1537-1601) was elected Archbishop of Mainz in 1582. The position was secular as well as religious, as archbishops were also Archchancellors (high-ranking court officers) and Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. His primary task was re-Catholization of the region, but he also became a vigorous prosecutor of witchcraft. A wave of persecution and witch trials began in 1593, following a series of severe storms affecting crops and epidemics striking cattle--which were seen as the result of malevolent witchery. The trials between 1594 and 1614 resulted in 236 executions..

Description
Frankfurt: B. Dondorf, 1854. Ravenstein, Friedrich August (1809-81). Plastischer Schul-Atlas für die erste Stufe des Unterrichts in der Erdkunde. Set of 8 colored relief maps printed on light pasteboard, in the original cardboard drop-side box (expertly repaired) with polychrome paper label, preserved in a cloth drop-side box with acetate window in the lid. Frankfurt am Main: B. Dondorf, 1854. 235 x 282 mm. (maps); 245 x 295 mm. (box). Raised areas of maps a bit worn, box label a bit soiled and rubbed, but a very good set of this fragile atlas. Third edition, complete with the rare original box featuring a highly decorative polychrome label on the lid, with inner label serving as the set's "title-page" and key to the maps. Ravenstein, an innovative German cartographer, was the first to produce and publish commercially viable relief maps, issuing the first edition of his "Plastic" (i.e., relief) atlas in 1838. The atlas, intended as a teaching tool, was a considerable success, going through several editions up until the late 19th century; it was also issued in English and French versions. The set includes maps of Germany, Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Australia, together with an "Ideal-Bild" illustrating the maps' various cartographic features. Due to their fragility, examples of this atlas are scarce. .
