Description
Superb black and white photo of Welles in costume as Othello, in front of an Italian set (perhaps painted by Eugene Berman) apparently designed for this Christmas card, with "Othello / Buon Natale" on the banners at the top. Circa 1951. Inscribed in white ink "Dearest Dadda and Hazel: God willing this is the last Christmas in a long time - we'll spend apart --- All my love as always Orson". Maurice Bernstein ("Dadda") became Orson's legal guardian after the death of Welles's mother (when he was 9) and his father (when he was 15.) Bernstein called the young Welles "Pookles" and gave him two most influential gifts: a magic set and a toy theatre.

Tokyo: Kaigai Kogyo, 1929. Very good.. [2],4,8,10,416,[4]pp., plus twenty-five double-sided photographic plates (one folding). Original illustrated wrappers printed in blue, green, white, and yellow. Moderate toning, minor edge wear. Light foxing to beginning and end of text block, otherwise internally clean. A rare and informative guide to Brazil intended for Japanese immigrants to the country in the early 20th century. The work contains chapters on the history of Brazil (including its relationship with Japan and information on the contributions of indigenous peoples and "Black Africans"), the geography of the country, the suitability of the country for Japanese immigrants (including the quantity of available land, a good climate, and a laundry list of favorable crops), origins, trends, and the present state of Japanese immigration (including detailed information on companies helpful to immigrants), the relationship and opportunities for Japanese immigrants in the coffee industry, and more. Towards the end of the work are detailed tables and lists of information on numerous historical, economic, and agricultural aspects related to Japanese immigration. The photographic plates picture notable monuments and scenery in Brazil, Japanese immigrants already in the country, various agricultural and business locations, scenes in Japanese colonies, shots featuring the harvesting of agricultural products, and more. The only folding plate is comprised of two pages showing small panoramic photographs of Japanese colonies, one along a river. Only one copy of this work in the world, at the National Diet Library in Japan.

Description
Catskill [NY]: Mackay Croswell, 1796. 12mo. 115, [1 blank] pp. Disbound. Margins trimmed close to, but not touching, text. Good+. "Bidwell, a one-time Yale tutor and an associate of Thomas Jefferson, later became involved in political scandals and absconded to Canada. He was a brilliant jurist and here writes a legal and historical examination of the claim of Connecticut to the Wyoming Valley, supporting the Colonists' right and title" [Eberstadt]. The document vindicates Connecticut's legal struggle to perfect title to western lands in a large tract along the Susquehannah River, comprising a substantial chunk of Pennsylvania. The Susquehannah Company, formed in Connecticut in 1753, proposed to settle the area with Connecticut citizens, and so ignited violent conflict with Pennsylvania claimants. "This pamphlet was 'especially worthwhile for its discussion of the decision by the Commissioners of the Conferation [sic] made at Trenton, New Jersey' (Streeter) which argued in favor of Pennsylvania" [Reese]. Connecticut finally ceded the land to Pennsylvania in 1800. Reese, Federal Hundred 56. Evans 30091. Streeter Sale 982. Howes B431aa. 167 Eberstadt 427.

Miramax. No binding. Fine. [New York]: Miramax Films, 1991. Set of 8 vintage original 10 x 8" (25 x 20 cm) black-and-white photos. Six feature actor John Gielgud in title role. One has small wax pencil mark in lower blank right border, overall fine. Prospero's Books is an avant-garde film adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, written and directed by Peter Greenaway. Sir John Gielgud plays Prospero, the protagonist who provides the off-screen narration and the voices to the other story characters. As noted by Peter Conrad in the New York Times on 17 November 1991, Greenaway intended the film "as an homage to the actor and to his 'mastery of illusion'. In the film, Prospero is Shakespeare, and having rehearsed the action inside his head, speaking the lines of all the other characters, he concludes the film by sitting down to write The Tempest." Stylistically, Prospero's Books is narratively and cinematically innovative in its techniques, combining mime, dance, opera and animation. About a tenth of the movie was made on Japanese high definition television (HDTV). Edited in Japan, it makes extensive use of digital image manipulation (using Hi-Vision video inserts and the Quantel Paintbox system), often overlaying multiple moving and still pictures with animations. Michael Nyman composed the musical score and Karine Saporta choreographed the dance. The film is also notable for its extensive use of nudity, reminiscent of Renaissance paintings of mythological characters. The nude actors and extras represent a cross-section of male and female humanity. (Wikipedia)

Sankt Peterburg (St. Petersburg): Parfenon, 1922. Softcover. First edition, 1 of 1000 copies; 9 1/2 x 6 1/4; pp. [1], 4-46, [2]; off-white, glossy wraps, printed in black; wraps with age-toning and small chips along edges and spine; small label of Russian-French publisher and bookseller Jacques Povolozky to front wrap verso; good to very good condition. Book design by Nikolai Tyrsa.Written by Russian historian, bibliographer, and member of St. Petersburg's Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanovich Saitov (1849 - 1938), the book, in prose, letters, and articles, followed the life of Sergei Aleksandrovich Sobolevskii (1803 - 1870). A bibliophile, businessman, world traveller, and one of Pushkin's closest friends since childhood, Sobolevskii would help the author prepare for press a number of his major works, among many other favors, including talking his way out of several duels (alas, not out of the last one). The designer of the book's wraps and the logo of the publisher was renowned painter and graphic artist Nikolai Andreevich Tyrsa (1887 - 1942). He studied under Leon Bakst and Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, was part of Mir Iskusstva, became a professor in his later years and taught painting and drawing, and was a founding member of the Soviet School of Children's Book Illustration.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: A hotly-anticipated and endlessly provocative new thriller of race and privilege set in an all-Black gated community from #1 New York Times best-selling author Nicola Yoon • "Brilliant...Your book club will be discussing this one for DAYS."-Jodi Picoult Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world's troubles. Jasmyn's only friends in the community are equally perplexed and frustrated by most residents' outlook. Then Jasmyn discovers a terrible secret about Liberty and its founders. Frustration turns to dread as their loved ones start embracing the Liberty way of life. Will the truth destroy her world in ways she never could have imagined? Thrilling with insightful social commentary, One of Our Kind explores the ways in which freedom is complicated by the presumptions we make about ourselves and each other.(Publisher).
