Description
2 p.l., lvi, 502 pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. sheep-backed marbled boards, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Dessain, 1779. A most unusual copy, very probably Chardin’s own copy, of this sale catalogue; it is the first of several sales, here held under the maiden name of his wife “Filheul,” by which Chardin, one of the most important Parisian booksellers of his time, periodically disposed of a portion of his vast stock. We know of later sales in 1806, 1819 (in London), and 1824. This did not prevent Chardin from selling many rare books and MSS. directly to collectors throughout his career — the most outstanding was no doubt the Psalter of St. Louis which he sold to a Russian Grand Duke, and which Louis XVIII acquired from him for the Bibliothèque Royale. The above catalogue, especially rich in early French books, is extremely well compiled and has been long held in high esteem. According to Longchamp, I, p. 496, La Vallière purchased heavily at this sale. One of the remarkable features of this catalogue is the large number of heterodox and politically subversive books betraying Chardin’s sympathies which, years later, made him an enthusiastic supporter of the Revolution: of 122 lots only the number is given and their authors and titles are indicated by dots. In our copy these have been supplied by a contemporary annotator. According to Jean Viardot, from whose library this comes, this is Chardin’s own copy. He has signed it on page 424 “Chardin A Paris en Juillet 1780.” Another slightly later annotator has provided extensive notes on Chardin on pages 424-25. Chardin was eulogized at length by Dibdin who had him portrayed by Lewis in his Tour in France and Germany, II, pp. 400-404. Very good copy. 2544 lots; priced throughout in a contemporary hand. This copy lacks the final leaf with the list of 15th-century editio princeps. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 459–“Il s’y trouve un assez grand nombre de livres rares et singuliers.” Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 277. Peignot, p. 98–“Catalogue intéressant par le grand nombre d’articles précieux qu’il renferme.”.

Description
New York: European Publishing Co, 1898. First Edition. 1st edition. Signed by Stanton, in ink, on the endpaper. Rare signed (RBH says no signed copies at auction, and logs only one signed copy sold in the trade and that was 37 years ago). Original cloth, 5 pinholes to title (whatever was pinned there is now gone), small bookplate, rubbing to the extremities else a bright, very good copy. Her signature is in the wavering hand of the period (she was 86), but it is undeniably authentic, and dated (in another hand) “Aug 29–‘01” a year before she died. Cloth case. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a towering figure in the American women's suffrage movement, whose intellectual leadership and strategic vision proved indispensable to the fight for women's voting rights. Stanton was the organizer and leader of the 1848 women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, the first such convention in the U.S. and the birth of the American women's movement. Her authorship of the Declaration of Sentiments, modeled after the Declaration of Independence, boldly proclaimed that "all men and women are created equal" and established a philosophical framework for women's equality that would guide the movement for decades. Beyond suffrage, Stanton advocated for comprehensive reforms in women's legal status, challenging patriarchal marriage laws, promoting women's education, and addressing economic independence. Her 50-year partnership with Susan B. Anthony created a powerful alliance that combined Stanton's radical thinking and powerful writing with Anthony's organizational skills and public speaking abilities. Though she did not live to see the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, Stanton's groundbreaking work laid the essential foundation for this historic achievement.

Physics 15, no. 1 (Jan.-Feb. 1947); no. 2 (Mar.-Apr. 1947); no. 3 (May June 1947). 1-21; 121-140; 255-272pp., plus reproduced typescript table of contents to all three parts inserted in part 1. Text illustrations. 267 x 199 mm. Original printed wrappers. Offprints stapled together. Fine copies. From the library of Theodore von Karman (1881-1963), with his characteristic docketing on the first offprint's front wrapper. First Separate Editions. The first theoretical study of rocketry published in the United States after World War II, written by three members of Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The three-part paper, published two years after the end of the war, reflects the advances in rocket science made available to the United States after the collapse of Nazi Germany, which during the war had developed the first long-range guided rockets (the V-1 and V-2) and used them as weapons in the last months of the conflict. The paper also discusses the work on liquid- and solid-propellant rocket systems done at Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory under the guidance of the lab's director, Theodore von Karman. Topics covered here include the dynamics of rocket jets, the theory of solid-propellant operation, fundamental of liquid-propellant rocket motors, sounding rockets and escape from the earth, and rockets utilizing nuclear energy. This set of offprints is from the library of Theodore von Karman, who in addition to directing the JPL at Cal Tech was also the founder of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation, one of the industrial giants of the jet age. "At Caltech, Karman and his students laid the foundations for aerodynamic design leading to supersonic flight" (DSB). Ley, Rockets, Missiles and Space Travel (1951), p. 415. .

Description
[Boston, MA, 1930. 29, [3 blank] pp. Original gray printed wrappers [minimal sunning and wear], two staples. Text clean. Near Fine. Whitney explains, "I intend to confine my remarks wholly to the past, in describing certain episodes of the panic as they appeared at the time to the administration of the New York Stock Exchange . . . The volume of trading on the Exchange was active, but not at all out of hand. The downward trend of stock prices was gradual and several time interrupted by brisk rallies. Many people at the time complacently characterized this lower drift of prices as 'a healthy reaction' or 'a creeping bear market' . . . Everyone then realized the panic was on and that we must be ready for any emergency. . . When panic occurs, there is a sharp disillusionment of society as a whole, and a temporary absence of those customary assumptions upon the basis of which normal life proceeds. All at once, the inconceivable terrors of the unknown and the unfamiliar are thrust upon the public mind; confidence is paralyzed and until it is restored, chaos reigns." [pp.3-4] Financier Richard Whitney [1888-1974] was Vice President of the New York Stock Exchange when the market crashed in October, 1929. Initially credited with halting the crash, he was quickly named became President of the Exchange. He gave a series of Addresses explaining the crash and defending the responses of his colleagues. This early Address examines the market effects of emotional upheaval, and the steps taken by bankers and other market players to stem the tide. . Whitney's reputation came crashing down. He was imprisoned in 1938 for embezzlement. His New York Times obituary explains that Whitney, "unknown to all his admirers, was a miserably poor manager of his own financial affairs, and as he fell deeper and deeper into debt, he descended into thievery to cover himself. In 1938, exposed as the embezzler of funds entrusted to him by the stock exchange and the New York Yacht Club, of which he was treasurer, as well as misappropriating funds from his father-in-law's estate, the one-time hero of Wall Street was sent to Sing Sing Prison" [Richard Whitney, 86, Dies; Headed Stock Exchange" by Albin Krebs, The New York Times, 12/06/1974].
