London: Enitharmon Press, 1972. First Edition. wraps. Fine. Avigdor Arikha. Folio (11-3/4" x 15") in wraps, loosely housed as issued in a paper folder, cloth chemise, and slipcase. Text printed by Will and Sebastian Carter on paper made by J. Barcham Green. Of a total of 137 numbered copies illustrated with 3 original etchings by Avigdor Arikha, each signed in pencil by the artist, this is copy #121 and is one of only 12 "Ad personam" copies. Rather than being signed on the colophon page as with the regular copies, this is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front of the folder: "for Herbert Myron/from his friend/Sam. Beckett/Paris May/1973." The text of THE NORTH comprises the penultimate paragraph of THE LOST ONES with minor variants from the full edition in English. Herbert Myron, a professor of French at Boston University, was a friend who had a lengthy correspondence with Beckett. Myron introduced Beckett to Lawrence Harvey who wrote SAMUEL BECKETT: POET AND CRITIC, focusing on Beckett's least known writings.

[París, France: Paulot & Carré, 1828. Wallpaper broadside (45 x 51 cm.), with seven-color woodcut (black, orange, green, blue, white, gray, and brown). Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states, "Bonne double bierre", and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke, appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte, but the stated publisher and date, and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré, are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint, in Rexheim, France. That print, with the same text, background color, print colors and rough size, depicts two women and a child, seated under an arbor with a military officer, enjoying a drink. Two exhibitions at Rixheim included that print; three similar prints were included in the groundbreaking exhibition by wallpaper collector and manufacturer Félix Follot, Papiers peints, à l'exposition universelle internationales de 1900 à Paris. Three similar prints were shown at the Exposition (notice 156 "Deux affiches illustrées imprimées chez Paulot et Carré (1828-1830) (Bière, Cidre)" and notice 158 "Affiche illustrée 'Bonne double bierre'" (1828). The two scenes described here were issued interchangeably with a number of texts, including "Bonne Double Bierre", "Petite Biere", "Biere, Cidre", and "Eau de Vie de Cognac". Unevenly cut, with wide margins; affixed to modern matte with two small cloth hinges; one small cloth repair to verso. Some rubbing to surface of print and a bit of color loss to the face of one character, and general light creasing. Still, near very good. Rare. [Félix Follot. Comic portrait of British astrologer Jack Adams, the "Cunning Man of Clerkenwell Green," captioned in dog-Latin and signed "Hobbedeboody pinxit et scratchabat." John Timbs, who reproduced this engraving in his English Eccentrics and Eccentricities (1875), gave the following brief biography of Adams: "Among the celebrities of Clerkenwell Green was Jack Adams, whose nativity was calculated by Partridge, who affirmed that he was born on the 3rd of December, 1625, and that he was so great a natural, or simpleton, as to be obliged to wear long coats, besides other marks of stupidity. . . . "Jack Adams was a conjurer and professor of the celestial sciences; he was (says Granger's Supplement) 'a blind buzzard, who pretended to have the eyes of an eagle. He was chiefly employed in horary questions, relative to love and marriage, and knew, upon proper occasions, how to soothe and flatter the expectations of those who consulted him, as a man might have much better fortune from him for five guineas than for the same number of shillings . . . He assumed the character of a learned and cunning man; but was no otherwise cunning than as he knew how to overreach those credulous mortals who were as willing to be cheated as he was to cheat them, and who relied implicitly upon his art.' . . . "In an old print we have Jack Adams in a fantastic dress, with a tobacco-pipe in his girdle, standing at a table on which lies a horn-book and Poor Robin's Almanack. On one shelf is a row of books, and on another several boys' playthings, particularly tops, marbles, and a small drum. Before him is a man genteelly dressed, presenting five pieces; from his mouth proceeds a label, inscribed, 'Is she a princess?' This is meant for Carleton, who married the pretended German princess. Behind him is a ragged, slatternly woman, who also has a label in her mouth, with these words: 'Sir, can you tell my fortune?'" (Timbs, pp. 131-132). "The pretended German princess" refers to British criminal Mary Carleton, who assumed false identities in order to marry and defraud a number of men. She first came to public notice in 1663 when she was arrested and tried for impersonating a German princess in order to marry John Carleton, the brother-in-law of a tavern owner. .

Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers, by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself, and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides considerable information and many maps and plans of parts of the United States.
