Boston: William D. Ticknor & Company, 1848. First edition. Twelvemo (4 3/8 x 7 3/16 inches; 111 x 182 mm). [4], [i]-v, [1, blank], [1, half-title], [1, blank], 100, [4, Publisher's ads], [2, blank] pp. Without front free endpaper. Publisher's full brown cloth, decoratively stamped in blind. Gilt lettering on the spine. Former owner William Glen's bookplate of front pastedown. Head and tail of the spine chipped. Otherwise a very good copy. "Warren's Etherization provides a fascinating account of the early use of sulphuric ether in surgery, including a detailed description of the epochal first operation using anesthesia, which he performed on Octo-ber 16, 1846." (The History of Surgery in the United States, 1775-1900, Rutkow, 23). "[Etherization gives]the results derived from a year's experience of this agent, and from over two hundred cases in which it was used, or its employment witnessed, by Warren. It forms a neat little volume of one hundred pages, and gives an account of the operations of importance in which it had been used. At the hospital and in private practice, it had continued to be used with uniform success." (The Life of John Collins Warren vol. 1 387). Sabin 101475. HBS 64562. $2,500.

Description
New York/London: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. (in Grosset & Dunlap reissue dust jacket) [moderate shelfwear to bottom edge, very slight fraying to cloth at top of spine, top front corner bumped; jacket shows a little wear at edges and corners, faint staining at bottom corner of rear panel]. Mystery novel with a resurrectionist angle, involving a racketeer who's died in prison -- well, actually, he's basically volunteered to be executed by carbon monoxide gas, as part of his agreement to be the subject of an experimental technique designed to bring victims of such poisoning back to life -- the condition for his cooperation being that if it works, he'll be pardoned and set free. But just at the critical moment, the Governor of the State accidentally dies of carbon monoxide poisoning(!), and is brought into the operating chamber and placed on the next table. The doctor "proceeds to perform a double experiment. The blood is drawn out of both bodies, treated, and re-injected. Both men recover. But something has gone wrong...." (Wasn't there a Boris Karloff movie with a plot something like this?) This seems to have been the author's only published book; institutional holdings are pretty slim, with just a dozen copies recorded by OCLC. [NOTE that although the book itself is the first (Knopf) edition, the dust jacket has been supplied from a Grosset & Dunlap reprint; the illustration appears to be identical with the original.] .

Very Good+
Description
Toronto: McClelland and Stewart. Very Good+. 1930. First Canadian Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [solid clean copy, slight bumping at all corners, very slight exposure of boards at bottom corners, small vintage bookseller's stamp at bottom of front pastedown]. Another unknown book by another forgotten author (my speciality!). Born in 1877, she served in the United States Indian Field Service (the educational wing, if you will, of the Bureau of Indian Affairs) from 1902 until 1918, when she married and (according to one brief biography) commenced her writing career, which wasn't especially prolific: in addition to this book, she published only two others, plus a play ("Woman of Character") written for a cast of nine women. Although she sometimes drew upon her expierences with Native Americans in her books, this particular one is set in a village in upstate New York, close to the Canadian border, and deals with (in the words of a contemporary viewer) "country life at its lowest level." One writer lauded the novel as showing "deep insight into the problems of adolescence and into the ideals of womanhood," one of those comments that doesn't really say anything at all. The author's scrapbooks are held in the archives of the Arizona Historical Society, should you care to investigate her ouevre further. .
