Description
[Havana, 1916. Very good.. Broadside, printed on light orange silk, approximately 16.25 x 9 inches. Minor edge wear, one small tear near bottom right. A seemingly unrecorded silk broadside issued by the Cuba-American Jockey Club Company, advertising the lineup of horses and the schedule for a series of five races during Dia de las Damas ("Ladies Day") at the Oriental Park racetrack in Marianao, Havana in 1916. In addition, the top of the broadside is printed with small oval- and diamond-shaped portraits picturing the nine officers of the club, who are identified by name and their position within the club. Below these portraits is a listing of fourteen officers of the club. The Oriental Park Racetrack ("Parque Oriental") opened in 1915 for winter racing which began in November and lasted into March each year. The racetrack was the only thoroughbred track in Cuba until Fidel Castro practically shut it down after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The present broadside is a visual reminder of the influx of American business interests in Cuba in the early 20th century. No copies reported in OCLC.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. Near Fine. [Los Angeles: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1942]. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin photo. Near fine. After rising from showgirl to bit player to leading lady in B-films to star at RKO, Lucille Ball left in 1942 and came to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Though MGM featured her and her spectacular looks in a few musicals, they were not sure what to do with her so she moved on just a few years later. While at MGM she posed for a plethora of fantastic portraits, including this one. Though there is no blurb nor photographer's stamp, this is likely the work of Clarence Bull.

A WWII-era booklet published by the War Manpower Commission, recruiting Americans for war production jobs to support the boys abroad. At this time, there was a large need for people to work in factories, agriculture, and production. Lists different kinds of jobs available ranging from coal and metal mining to education, food processing, construction and repair services. Urges readers to contact their local branch of the U.S. Employment Service to find the right role for their age and skill set. Single vol. (7.35" by 3.75"), pp. [12], illus., in original illus. wrps printed in black and blue with photo of two women and one man working in production jobs.
