Description
Philadelphia: M. Carey, 1816. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. With 1 folding map. Contemporary calf, worn, rebcked; interior lightly browned due to paper stock. Overall a very good copy. First American edition (first printed in London, 1814). A voyage to Abyssinia was produced after Salt’s second trip to Ethiopia. This travelogue provides detailed descriptions of material culture and social customs of Ethiopia and surrounding territories. He even includes vocabulary lists of languages spoken along the African coast, spanning from Mozambique to Egypt. Undertaken on behalf of the British Government, he opens his dedication to the Prince Regent with the request that His Royal Highness support advancement of the Christian religion in that territory. Originally trained as an artist, Salt (1780–1827) was a diplomat and Egyptologist. He first traveled to Ethiopia in 1805 to establish a British relationship with the Ras of Tigre, and returned again in 1809 for two years. Salt traveled extensively and collected antiquities which now form part of the British Museum, the Sir John Soane Museum in London, and the Louvre.

Description
1932. Unbound. Fine. Glossy gelatin silver photograph. Approximately 7" x 5" housed in decorative folding mat. Slight wear on the mat but the photograph is fine. The image displays 13 women and girls dressed in Uncle Sam-themed costumes, posed in front of a building and bearing a sign reading "Derry Aux. Bonus Mrchers 100%." In 1924 Congress enacted a law paying bonuses to World War One veterans. Other than small amounts that were paid in cash, the bonuses were supposed to accrue as certificates that would pay out in 1945. However, because of the Depression, Congress considered another bill that would allow for immediate redemption of the certificates. In 1932 veterans and their families began to march on Washington to press the case for this bill. By Summer over 20,000 veterans and their families were camped out in Washington in unsanitary conditions, when the bill was finally defeated in the Senate. In July, troops forced the marchers out, killing one veteran and injuring many others. Additional marches and clashes followed, with the movement subsiding when the new President Franklin D. Roosevelt offered alternative jobs with the C.C.C. This image captures some of the female family members who were in support of the marchers. We cannot positively identify the "Derry" mentioned, but from provenance it seems to be either Derry in New Hampshire or Maine.

Description
Folio, two and a half pages, in very good clean and legible condition. William Evens, "music teacher," and an English immigrant, writes discussing various aspects of music and music publishing, along with other topics, including the preponderance of Irish, both "old" and "raw" in Pittsburgh: John Rowe Parker (1777-1844) the recipient of this letter, made his mark in history by his contribution to early American music. From 1820 until April 1823, he was editor and publisher of the "Euterpeiad, or Musical Intelligencer and Ladies Gazette" – the first American musical periodical. Working out of a Music Warehouse near Fanueil Hall, he published the periodical sold pianos, organs and other musical instruments by catalog, and became the first large distributor of "fashionable" (secular) American music. "Respected Sir, I recd your favour & package of music the 12 inst. In good order through the care of Carey & son Phila – I have took some time with Anxiety to see it come along – I wrote a few lines to Carey & Son concerning the Package – by the time they got the Letter I recd the package – the music you consign to me I think I can sell it for you – but it will be on hand some time first – Music is so little cultivated in this place. I will send some of it down to Cincinnati they have a better taste & are improving – hear is two or three Englishman that is Acquainted with music – but we have every obstacle to contend with in Introducing any thing new – we have large Congregations of Covenanters & Seceders which are composed of all Irish – which are very Bigoted & Superstitious a large congregation of Presbyterians Composed of Old Irish & raw Irish – the fact is the place fairly smells of Irish you may rely upon my doeing the best with the music I can but after this I will inform you what music I can sell Your prospectus of the Seraph I will send down to Cincinnati & over to Washington. I have not obtaind any Subscrs for Handel works without you have recd any from Cincinnati you will please to put my name down as a Subscriber for the Seraph. If I can obtain 5 or 6 Subs for this work you will hear from me soon. It is nearly 6 months since I heard from you If you have any Nos of the Seraph out please to hand them to Mr. Loring as I have directed him to send a Nother small package on. I have wrote to him this date. I am oblige to you for the two or three Extra piece of music & the pamphlets of the Performance you have favourd me. Please to inform me wether the Boston Centinal or which paper is the best for Musical Information – it appears to me the Boston Intelligencer & Evening Gazette the paper you sent me in the winter to be a good paper According to the price it is only printed once a week. I receive the Centinal its nopt for politics one side the other it is for Musical Information – so that I can see what there is going on in Boston in the musical department. I have directed Mr. Loring to direct my packages to Carey & Son Philadelphia from there to Patterson & Lambdin or Eichbaum & Johnson of Pittsburgh – Carey & Son had regular correspondence with Patterson & Lambdin so for the future the packages will come more speed I hope. Please to inform me wether the Cincinnati Singers apply to you for music or you have correspondence with them. I beg a favour of you if you please to pecure a coppy of the Constitution of the Handle & Haydn Society I presume they have printed coppys. Excuse me for my Inquisitiveness – my neighbours think I am music mad I am all ways prying into some musical matter. Although I have subscribd for the Seraph I expect the London coppy brought over in 4 volumes in the Fall. It gives me satisfaction to Incourage any musical work. I have a Brother in London that is coming out to this country I wrote to him to bring it & a number of other musical works. Hear is an Englishman in this place that brought over Whithers Prospectus of the Seraph last September I presume you have correspondence with Button Whither & Beadnell Music store St. Paul's Church Yard London ..."
