Description
13/04/1820. Here Monroe returns the original to its recipientThe first great crisis over slavery occurred when Missouri requested to be admitted to the Union as a slave state in 1819. The number of slave and free states was then balanced at 11 each, and admission would upset that balance. Both north and south staked out positions based on sectionalism, rather than nationalism, the first time this had occurred. The debates in Congress were intense. With so many territories in the west still thinly settled or not settled at all (and the certainty that additional requests for admission would be presented as these territories were populated and qualified for statehood), it was clear that this divisive issue could recur again and again. Congress thus sought to settle the question once and for all by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free one, and more importantly, by drawing a line below which slavery would be permitted in the territories and above which it would be forbidden. The Missouri Compromise appeared to most to be a perfect solution, but some were troubled by the implications of drawing a physical line between north and south, and thereby creating defined sections where once there was a union. In March, 1820, Jefferson received word of the details of the Compromise essentially agreed upon in Congress. He was appalled by the very idea of reducing a political disagreement to geographical terms. On April 5, 1820, he wrote to Mark Hill, a Maine congressman, that “The idea of a geographical line, once suggested, will brood in the minds of all those who prefer the gratification of their ungovernable passions to the peace and union of their country.” We offer a letter that proves that Pres. Monroe was shown this exact letter to Hill (and was thus aware of Jefferson’s opposition to the Missouri Compromise); in fact it is the very cover letter with which Monroe returned the Jefferson letter to Hill.Autograph Letter Signed as President to Mark Hill, April 13, 1820. “Mr. Monroe has perused Mr. Jefferson’s letter with pleasure, which he now returns to Mr. Hill, with thanks for his attention.” Just days later, Jefferson wrote the famous letter saying that the Missouri question was a “firebell in the night,” and promised to be the knell of the Union. Despite Jefferson’s opposition, Monroe felt that he had no choice but to sign the Missouri Compromise. Ultimately Jefferson proved to be correct; dividing the nation geographically seemed to freeze attitudes and actions along sectional lines, and was the first step to Civil War. See Jefferson and His Time by Malone for a full discussion.

London: Leonard Smithers, 1906. Too Free for Circulation" Beardsley's Suppressed Juvenal & Lucian Drawings A Clandestine Portfolio of Decadent Eroticism, Limited to 120 Copies BEARDSLEY, Aubrey. An Issue of Five Drawings Illustrative of Juvenal and Lucian. London: [Leonard Smithers], 1906. Limited to 120 copies. Folio (13 3/8 x 8 15/16 inches; 340 x 227 mm.). [2, Title, verso blank], [2, Limitation statement, verso blank], [2, The Drawings, verso blank], five full page illustrations. In the original reddish-plum paper portfolio, titled "Aubrey Beardsly/An Issue of Five Drawings/Illustrative of/Juvenal and Lucian/Price £1 1 0 net". Hinge of portfolio expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Now housed in a felt-lined, three-quarter maroon morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments. 1. Juvenal Scourging Woman [1896] 2. Bathyllus in the Swan Dance 3. Bathyllus Posturing 4. Lucian's Strange Creatures 5 Birth from the Calf on the Leg "This issue contains five exceedingly brilliant Drawings by the late Aubrey Beardsley which have been regarded as too free in design for general circulation. Three of these illustrate THE SIXTH SATIRE OF JUVENAL (the satire against Woman), and the remaining two designs were intended for LUCIAN'S TRUE HISTORY issued about twelve years ago, but were never included in the volume. These Drawings are printed from the original blocks, and as only a few engraver's proofs have previously been pulled, the impressions are perfectly clear, and may be regarded (considering the few copies now printed) as Proofs. On hundred and twenty copies only have been printed (each numbered) on vellum paper, foolscap folio in size, and enclosed in suitable coloured wraper. This copy is No........." (Limitation leaf). "120 numbered copies. Reade and Dickinson variously date this to 1897 and 1899 as well as 1905, the year given by Gallatin. The prospectus (printed on paper) includes the introductory material from the colophon leaf." (Lasner) The reason these drawings were described as "too free in design for general circulation" is closely tied to the moral panic surrounding the Decadent movement in the 1890s, particularly after the trial of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Understanding this context makes the portfolio far more interesting historically. Why the Drawings Were Suppressed: 1. The Post-Wilde Cultural Backlash. After Wilde's conviction for "gross indecency" in 1895, British authorities and publishers became extremely cautious about Decadent literature and art. Artists and writers associated with the movement - including Aubrey Beardsley and his publisher Leonard Smithers - suddenly found themselves under scrutiny. Beardsley had already been linked to Wilde through: his illustrations for Salome and his association with the magazine The Yellow Book. When Wilde was arrested, Beardsley was dismissed from The Yellow Book immediately, even though he had no involvement in the scandal. 2. The Juvenal Drawings Were Explicitly Misogynistic and Erotic. Three of the five designs illustrate Satire VI by the Roman satirist Juvenal. That satire is famous for its violent attack on women, including themes of: sexual excess, adultery, cruelty, moral corruption. Beardsley's images amplify those themes with: sadomasochistic imagery, grotesque exaggeration and decadent erotic symbolism. One drawing - "Juvenal Scourging Woman" - shows a stylized scene of punishment that Victorian publishers considered unprintable. 3. The Lucian Drawings Were Equally Strange. The remaining designs relate to True History by Lucian of Samosata. Lucian's narrative includes: bizarre hybrid creatures, surreal transformations and absurd erotic imagery. Beardsley illustrated these themes with grotesque fantasy forms, including the notorious drawing "Birth from the Calf on the Leg." Even in the 1890s this was considered extreme grotesquerie. 4. Why Smithers Published Them Anyway. Smithers specialized in Decadent and semi-clandestine publications. His catalogue included: works by Oscar Wilde, erotic or controversial literature and privately circulated art portfolios. Rather than issuing the drawings publicly, he solved the problem by: printing only 120 copies; selling them mainly to collectors and presenting them as "proof impressions". This allowed him to avoid the attention that a commercial edition might attract. Some scholars believe the drawings were originally intended for a full illustrated edition of Juvenal that never appeared - another project abandoned after the Wilde scandal made such work commercially risky. Among the five plates in An Issue of Five Drawings Illustrative of Juvenal and Lucian, the one that caused the greatest discomfort to early editors and museum curators was "Juvenal Scourging Woman." It is widely regarded by Beardsley scholars as the most controversial image in the portfolio, and for several decades it was either omitted or discreetly suppressed in exhibition catalogues. Why "Juvenal Scourging Woman" Was So Problematic: The drawing illustrates Satire VI by Juvenal - a notoriously misogynistic Roman satire attacking the morals of women in imperial Rome. Beardsley's treatment is deliberately extreme: a stylized female figure subjected to punishment; theatrical cruelty rendered with elegant line and erotic undertones typical of Decadent imagery The combination of violence, sexuality, and satire made Victorian publishers extremely nervous. For late-19th-century Britain - even in avant-garde circles - this imagery crossed a line. Why Museums Avoided Showing It: After the scandal involving Oscar Wilde in 1895, institutions tried to distance themselves from anything connected to the Decadent movement. As a result, exhibitions of Aubrey Beardsley's work often excluded this drawing and some catalogues reproduced only four of the five images. Early 20th-century Beardsley monographs occasionally described it but did not illustrate it. This pattern persisted well into the mid-20th century. The Other Drawing That Alarmed Editors and the second most controversial plate is: "Birth from the Calf on the Leg." This grotesque design depicts a bizarre mythological birth scene that borders on the surreal. Its imagery - combining: distorted anatomy, symbolic fertility, grotesque fantasy - made it one of Beardsley's strangest inventions. For decades it was regarded as too eccentric and unsettling for mainstream reproduction. Why the Portfolio Matters in Beardsley's Career The five drawings represent Beardsley's final stylistic phase (1896), when his line became: extremely thin, highly ornamental and almost abstract This same late period produced his famous illustrations for: Lysistrata and the magazine The Savoy. The style is more extreme than his earlier work for Salome. A Collector's Perspective Many Beardsley collectors consider this portfolio appealing because it contains: suppressed drawings, late-period Beardsley, printing from the original blocks and a tiny limitation (120 copies) It is therefore one of the closest things to a "private portfolio" of Beardsley erotica issued in the early 20th century. Gallatin 30; Lasner 149.

Christmas Music Supplement of The Examiner. Chicago & New York: The George M. Hill Company, 1900. First edition. Large folio newspaper supplement. Single sheet printed on both sides measuring 27 7/8 x 21 1/2 inches (708 x 546 mm), folded twice to make eight pages. Printed with musical notation for two songs with words by L. Frank Baum and illustrations by W. W. Denslow. The music composed by Alberta N. Hall. Original pictorial newspaper supplement as issued. As typical for ephemeral holiday newspaper inserts, surviving examples commonly show folds, short marginal tears, or light wear; well-preserved copies are uncommon. A charming and scarce piece of Baum ephemera issued during the remarkable year 1900, advertising Baum, et al's The Songs of Father Goose, published in book form by The George M. Hill Company in the same year which also saw the appearance of Baum and Denslow's celebrated The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The supplement presents two songs derived from Baum's musical nursery project Songs of Father Goose, "The Ostrich Dance" and "Baby Pulled the Pussy's Tail", illustrated in Denslow's bold and whimsical style. Produced as a Christmas newspaper supplement, it was intended for seasonal amusement rather than preservation; most copies were discarded shortly after publication. Because of its large-format newspaper production and fragile folding format, the survival rate appears to be very low. Consequently the piece is considerably scarcer than the bound Baum - Denslow publications issued by the George M. Hill Company during the same period. OCLC locates no copies in libraries and institutions wordwide.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1886. The Original Alice: Carroll's Manuscript Facsimile in First Edition CARROLL, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Being a Facsimile of the Original MS. Book afterwards developed into "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." With Thirty-Seven Illustrations by the Author. London: Macmillan and Co., 1886. First edition. Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 187 x 124 mm.). viii, [8], 95, [2], [2, advertisements], [1, blank] pp. Publisher's original red cloth over boards, covers triple-ruled in gilt, upper cover and spine decoratively lettered in gilt, rear cover with central gilt medallion depicting the Mock Turtle, coated black endpapers, all edges gilt. A near fine copy, bright and unusually well preserved, housed in a fleece-lined quarter red morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments. The Origin of Wonderland One of the most evocative and desirable of all Carroll publications, this volume presents the facsimile of the original handwritten manuscript - the very book that Lewis Carroll prepared in 1864 as a Christmas gift for Alice Liddell. That manuscript, later expanded and transformed into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), represents the true genesis of one of the most enduring works of English literature. Unlike the familiar Tenniel-illustrated editions, Alice's Adventures Under Ground offers a uniquely intimate encounter with Carroll's imagination: his own calligraphy, page design, and illustrations, preserving the story in its earliest, most personal form. The facsimile edition of 1886 - issued to benefit Carroll's charities - is therefore not merely a reprint, but a direct visual and textual echo of the original manuscript itself. Description
43 folding leaves. 8vo (240 x 170 mm.), orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers with orig. title-slip, old stitching. [Japan]: [1791] (date of Preface). A rare manuscript of Japanese natural studies, or the “learning of roots and herbs” (honzōgaku 本草學) by Zō, doctor and botanist (1758-1834). It was one of the major intellectual trends of the Tokugawa period, with a large portion of the educated classes taking an interest in the topic. Initially inspired by the Chinese encyclopedic work Bencao gangmu 本草綱目 [Systematic Materia Medica], Japanese natural studies came with time to focus on the natural environment of Japan in contradistinction to China. Our manuscript, explicitly concerned with the mushrooms of “Our August Japan,” is a case in point. It contains descriptions of 129 mushrooms, divided into categories: wood mushrooms, ground mushrooms, bamboo mushrooms, wood-ear mushrooms, and poisonous mushrooms. Our author lists alternative names for a mushroom in question, notes where it grows, and describes its appearance. Literary references are given in many of the entries. Curiously, despite the manuscript’s title, Zō Han quotes from Chinese local gazetteers, which often contained lists of local products. There is an appendix, which contains four essays. discusses, in turn, different names of the mushroom in various parts of Japan; the etymology of the character kinoko 蕈, meaning mushroom; the method of ascertaining the poisonous character of a mushroom; and a prescription for breaking down the poison. Zō was the author of Seikei zusetsu [An Illustrated Book of Agricultural Things], the great agricultural and botanical work issued in the early years of the 19th century. It is an encyclopedic survey of all the agricultural products and practices of Japan. He served the Satsuma fiefdom under the lord Shimazu Shigehide Our text was never printed, circulating only in manuscript form. ❧ Ueno Masuzō 上野益三, Nihon hakubutsugakushi 日本博物学史 (Tokyo: Heibonsha, 1973), p. 416.

Height 23 cms (9"); weight 3.3 kg. (7.2 lbs.). Brown patina. The composer is represented half-length turned slightly left. He wears a wig and is dressed in a jacket, vest, and cravat. "J. S. Bach" incised to front. Provenance Sotheby's Amsterdam, "An Important Private Collection from Hanover," 29 March 2007, lot 1185. Seffner is best remembered for his statue of Johann Sebastian Bach which stands in front of the south wall of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. See Neumann: Bilddokumente zur Lebensgeschichte Johann Sebastian Bachs, plate 623 and p. 438. "On Oct. 22, 1894, a skeleton was uncovered here in the cemetery of St. John Church. No stone or sign marked the grave site, but the excavators, guided by archival documents to look for an oaken coffin and by an oral tradition to seek a spot six paces from the south door of the church, believed they had found the earthly remains of Johann Sebastian Bach, laid to rest on July 30, 1750. The bones were examined by a team of medical experts from Leipzig, nearby Halle, and Vienna, declared authentic and studied for abnormalities. (There were none.) Then, in a moment of inspiration, the director of the group, the eminent Leipzig anatomist Wilhelm His, summoned the local sculptor Carl Ludwig Seffner to reconstruct Bach's countenance from the skull. The Seffner Bach Bust served in turn as the basis for Seffner's well-known 1908 statue of Bach, which stands alongside St. Thomas Church here. The New Bach Monument, as it is known (having succeeded a smaller memorial of 1843, sponsored by Mendelssohn), has become an object of veneration by Bach pilgrims the world over." George B. Stauffer in The New York Times, 2 April 2000.

Description
1958. [LGBTQ][Pulp] Highsmith, Patricia. Pen name "Claire Morgan." The Price of Salt. New York: Bantam Books, Bantam New Edition 1958. 7th Printing. Groundbreaking lesbian pulp novel The Price of Salt, originally published in hardcover by Coward-McCann in 1952. This edition is among the earliest mass-market disseminations of an overtly lesbian love story with a hopeful ending, an anomaly in midcentury queer fiction. The novel follows the emotionally charged relationship between two women, Therese Belivet, a young aspiring set designer, and Carol Aird, a sophisticated suburban housewife, set against the backdrop of 1950s America. Their romance challenges both social convention and internalized repression, with Carol ultimately choosing love over custody of her child. Highsmith's refusal to conclude the novel with tragedy or moral punishment marked a radical departure from contemporary lesbian fiction, which typically ended in death, madness, or heterosexual conformity. The present copy retains the original mass-market cover featuring a sepia-toned photographic design of two silhouetted women in a domestic interior, reinforcing the novel's central theme of quiet yet transformative intimacy. Binding fragile and cocked, front and rear wraps worn, creases, abrasions, and separation starting along joints; spine flaked with some text loss. Front cover holding with tape. Some pages coming loose from textblock. Moderately toned and brittle throughout. Scarce.

Trade PB (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED (in English) and SIGNED by Gustaf Unger: "To ____ / with sincere thanks for / your constant interest and aid / in my efforts, from your friend / (1/2) the author / Gustaf." The Unger twins first came to Hollywood around the early 1950s, and as members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were fixtures on the local scene for decades thereafter. They were regular patrons of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences research library as late as the late 1980s; I remember them as dapper elderly gentlemen who were unfailingly polite -- and that one was never seen without the other. (Bertil died in 1990, Gustaf in 1995.) Their book is entirely in Swedish, and was obviously intended to burnish their Hollywood credentials for their back-home readers, but can be enjoyed by the non-Swedish reader for the photographs alone, which feature (as does the cover design) a rather high proportion of buxom blonde actresses. For translation of the captions, Google is your friend. (Example: "Joan Crawford, Hollywoods snyggaste av de stjärnor som hållit sig genom åren." = "Joan Crawford, Hollywood's prettiest of the stars who have endured through the years.") A highlight of the photographs is a distinctly different view of the famous Jayne Mansfield-Sophia Loren breast-off -- a much friendlier depiction of this encounter than the Loren-side-eye version you've probably seen -- that I've never seen published anywhere else. .
