Toward the end of the war, he left the army to work as a mining engineer in New York, taking the position of President of the Everett Iron Company. After some time working for the United States Geological survey, he served as Director of the United States Mint from 1885 to 1889. Following that, worked as a private consulting geologist to western mining and railroad interests. Condition Folds, minor foxing, mounting remnants on verso. Description
This is a beautiful photograph of Egk , taken at the piano. He is seated and facing the camera with serious expression. It was taken in his late years, as his hair is white. He is formally dressed in suit and tie. The beauty of the black and white picture lies in its aesthetic, as he is seated at a grand piano with light-filled windows at his back and his reflection is caught in the raised cover of the grand piano. He signs on the lower white margin in a large hand, "Werner Egk." A very artistic image. When radio broadcasting became available to the public, Egk immediately realized its importance as a mass media and developed operas and radio plays. At the beginning of the 1930s, Egk turned his interest towards ballet and opera. In 1935, he premiered his first opera "Die Zaubergeige "("The magic violin"). His opera "Peer Gynt" is based on Henrik Ibsen's play.

Description
Philadelphia: Printed for the Rosenbach Foundation by the Gehenna Press, 1966. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 1,000 COPIES (of a total edition of 1,100). 305 x 241 mm. (12 x 9 1/2"). 81 pp. (including 15 photographic facsimiles).Facsimiles of the manuscripts for "Narcissus" edited and with an essay by David R. Smith. Distinctive marbled paper boards, enclosed in the original textured heavy inner folder and matching slipcase, paper labels on volume and case. Frontispiece portrait by Leonard Baskin. Printed in red and black, with very wide margins, on elegant Fabriano paper. In mint condition and IN THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD PACKING CONTAINER. This finely produced book examines the history and significance of Conrad's famous preface, which may be the best-known critical statement in English concerning modern fiction. About writing "Narcissus" and its preface, Conrad said, "After writing the last words of that book, . . . I understood that I had done with the sea, and that henceforth I had to be a writer. And almost without laying down the pen I wrote a preface, trying to express the spirit in which I was entering on the task of my new life." Both an emotional testimonial and a critical analysis, the preface "was the first (and remains the major) expression of [Conrad's] critical theories and his belief in his art." Smith presents a careful bibliography of the various forms of the preface, and he writes a perceptive 30-page commentary on the document's importance. Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was a sculptor, book-illustrator, wood-engraver, printmaker, graphic artist, writer, and teacher. He founded the Gehenna Press in 1942 while still a student at Yale (the name coming from a line in Milton's "Paradise Lost": "And black Gehenna call'd, the type of Hell"). The press has published more than 100 fine books and certainly must be considered one of the most successful private presses ever, given its longevity, its consistently high aesthetic achievement, and the unusual size of its output..
