Description
1820. First Edition. (ACKERMANN, Rudolph) GERNING, Baron Johann Isaac von. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine, from Mentz to Cologne. London: R. Ackermann, 1820. Folio (11-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches), period-style full green straight-grain morocco, gilt-decorated spine and boards. $8800.First edition, first issue, of one of Ackermann’s wonderful Picturesque Tours, beautifully illustrated with 24 hand-colored folio aquatints and large folding map. A lovely copy, beautifully bound to style. In the history of book production ""there is no more attractive figure than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books"" (Prideaux, 120-23). One of Ackermann's most lucrative projects was his remarkable Picturesque Tours, a series of seven books produced between 1820-28. This is his Tour Along the Rhine, with beautifully hand-colored aquatints by Daniel Havell and Thomas Sutherland after paintings by Christian Georg Schutz, depicting views of Mentz, the Castle of Furstenberg, the Church of Johannes, Pfalz Castle and the town of Kaub, the salmon fishery at Lurley, Coblentz, Bornhofen, Cologne and other sites along the river. The plates were pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and disseminating fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuries. The folding map shows the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. With accompanying text by Baron von Gerning describing the history and culture of the area (first published in German in 1819, without illustrations). First issue, without plate numbers in the top right corners. Tooley notes that plates 2 and 3 have variants dated either September or October; Abbey argues persuasively that to call either state an issue ""must remain doubtful,"" particularly given that large-paper copies have also been seen with the two plates dated October. At any rate, the quality of plates in either state are the same high standard; Abbey notes that ""there are definitely some later issues of the book, and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these plates are poor and the coloring less good"" (Abbey 217). This copy has plates 2 and 3 dated October, but most importantly none of the plates bear numbers in the upper right. Text watermarked 1817 and 1818; plates watermarked 1818 and 1819. Abbey, Travel 217. Prideaux, 337. Tooley 234. Title page neatly rehinged, plates fine and fresh, hand-coloring vivid. An excellent, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated work.

Description
New York: Van Winkle, 1820. First Edition. Wrappers. 1st American edition, 1st printing (all points per B.A.L.). It is the last in an 1819–1820 (7 vol.) series in which Irving invented the modern short story, but the 4 tales in our volume form a distinct and complete book with individual pagination (the first 5 vols. are continuously paginated), and even on its own it is laudable. Original wrappers, spine gone, covers loose but holding, a cover stain at 8 o’clock, a large chip to the blank corner of A2, the first half–title (no text lost), pencil notes to rear blanks, but good, and rare, and real, and the only right copy in wrappers we have had. Ex–E. S. Litchfield. The NY edition of The Sketch Book was published serially in 7 parts in paper wrappers, the London edition in 2 volumes in boards and labels. The NY edition’s part IV (Nov. 19, 1819) preceded vol. I of the London edition with parts I–IV (Feb. 16, 1820), but vol. II of the London with parts V–VII (Jul. 20, 1820) preceded the NY’s part VII (Sep. 13). Correct 7 vol. NY sets are rare because (for one reason) identifying the 1st printings of some parts rests entirely on the wrappers, and the text points only confirm an early, not a 1st, printing, since the first reprints left some (all?) errors uncorrected. So, rebound NY sets can’t be verified as correct and calling one a 1st edition without qualifying context is a deception, no matter how easy it is to do it. RBH lists 2 complete sets in wrappers sold at auction since 1975 (Stralem and Martin), neither with all the parts right. In fact, no complete and correct set in wrappers has sold at auction in 100 years. Sets offered today have one or more incorrect wrappers noted in proper descriptions, while evasive descriptions hide it by lacking full details (vague book cataloging is not normal it is just common because some truth decieves better than no truth). Now, misdescribing Sketch Book particulars is a trifle and a poor example of seller misdeeds for us to use, however there are sellers who regularly exercise the same tactics with all their books looking for an edge, though most of them do not think it shows. But it does, and they are abandoning potential customers with 3–digit IQs who avoid commerce with the tricky, and this hunt for stupid collectors and negligent librarians is seen across the generations, but it is most prevalent among younger booksellers and that is a depressing sign for the future. So, here is our advice. If your book is a reprint, or some part is missing, or wrong, or even unsure, just say so and be done with it, like a professional. Hmmm, you hum, why do some booksellers do this? 2 reasons. 1. Most of their books are not worth the price they are asking so they forsake accuracy and shape their descriptions to read like they are for books that might be worth it. 2. To them, you are not yourself. You are a performer in their lives, cast for a part you do not even know you are playing. They are predatory, contemptuous, and vain, and like most vain people, they are in denial, and self–buffered to think that no one could possibly be any smarter than they are and that no one sees through their thin deceptions. But we do. And we remember. And we are not the only dog barking. And we all talk about them. And we shop elsewhere. And we advise others to do the same. And we point out why. And they lose the best collectors, librarians, and booksellers, and lose them forever. And they never know it.

East Hampton / Tokyo: Harper's Books / Flying Books, 2015. Fine, with no jacket, as issued.. First Edition. Quarto. SIGNED by the photographer. Edition of 750, with five sets of 150 copies bearing different color foil stamps (black is out-of-print). Illustrated with 83 images of the artist's abstract color photography, a body of work distinct from the black and white images for which he is known. Through means of darkroom experimentation, Yokota layers sheets of unused large format color film and applies unorthodox developing methods before scanning the results. The mixing and manipulation of the film's chemicals produces vibrant and liquescent compositions that create forms reminiscent of fractal geometry and telescope images of the cosmos. Published in conjunction with Yokota's first solo show in the United States at Harper's Books, East Hampton, September 26 - December 1, 2015.

Description
[Washington DC, 1945. Very good.. Thirteen items, plus three duplicates. Light toning; minor wear and dust soiling. Interesting group of just over a dozen leaflets, pamphlets and circulars created and disseminated by the National Council for the Prevention of War (NCPW) before and during World War II. The organization was founded in 1921 by Congregational and Quaker minister Frederick J. Libby after he worked for the American Red Cross in France following World War I. The NCPW pushed for disarmament and neutrality during the interwar years and for peace after America's entrance into World War II. The present group contains several items from each period, as well as some fascinating transitional material, such as a mimeograph circular titled, "What Peace Organization, National and Local, Can Do in Wartime," dated eleven days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A good encapsulation of the council's work during this period.

Description
Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany: Ludwig Rutz, 1910. Wraps (Folded sheet). Concertina mounted onto wraps. Near Fine. Unusual catalogue, set up as a concertina, mainly for large ship models -- completed ship models, to be displayed like scupture, and the "models" are already built -- no assembly required. N.d., circa 1910. 12mo. 16.5 by12.5 cm. The concertina, about 84 cm wide when fully extended, is two-sided and has fourteen panels, the first panel attached to the wraps and having only text, the "Introduction", with the remaining 13 panels basically photographic plates. Eleven of these panels or plates present a single ship model, with one of these being also a chandelier. The last two panels are devoted to a knights-in-armor, two in each of the panels. All of the models, whether ships or knights, have in common a historic dimension. The ships might be based on specific ships, such as Columbus' Santa Maria, but mostly they are more general types of ships such as a 16th Century English warship. The models range in size but most would say overall they are quite large. The ships might be a mere 15 by 15 inches, or 38 by 38 cm, but they can be as tall as 47 inches, or about 120 cm, and as long as 55 inches, or about 140 cm. The knights are more of a standard size for figurines, which is 15 inches tall, or 38 cm tall. The catalogue was created for the American market, with an accompanying folded sheet, issued loose, with a printed letter by Ludwig Ruiz on one side, a price list covering 17 different items on the flip side, with prices given in dollars. The most expensive item, a Hanseatic merchant vessel from the 16th to 17th century, was priced at $142. In today's dollars, that would easily be the equivalent of around $3,500, and probably more than that. Curiously, these are decorative antiques one seldom comes upon nowadays. Unquestionably the demand for historical models of this sort and for armorial antiques has greatly receded, and we suspect was losing ground come the Depression. Not only would these models be of a size not compatible with many a house or apartment, but the passion for historicism of this kind in the decorative arts was scoffed at as new styles such as Art Deco and more streamlined modernism crowded it out. We have not been able to find out a great deal about Ludwig Rutz as yet. It would appear he was also a publisher who published copies of the Passion Play, for which the city is most famous. This is a scarce catalogue -- not only could we find no other copies of it on OCLC First Search, but also we would maintain it is a scarce type of catalogue. Light wear and age toning. Short closed tear by wrap fold. One or two stains.
