Description
Four folding engraved plates. xxxviii, [2], 184 pp. 4to, cont. mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: David l’aîné, 1749. First edition of one of Alembert’s most important books. “During the late 1740’s, d’Alembert, Clairaut, and Euler were all working on the famous three-body problem, with varying success. D’Alembert’s interest in celestial mechanics thus led him, in 1749, to publish a masterly work, the Recherches sur la Précession des Equinoxes…The precession of the equinoxes, a problem previously attacked by Clairaut, was very difficult. D’Alembert’s method was similar to Clairaut’s but he employed more terms in his integration of the equation of motion and arrived at a solution more in accord with the observed motion of the earth. He was rightly proud of his book.”–D.S.B., I, p. 113. A very fine copy and scarce on the market. From the library of Marchese Giulio Stanga Carlo Trecco (d. 1832), amateur mathematician and physicist who formed a large collection of scientific instruments, with his shelfmark label at head of spine. ❧ Babson 36.

Description
1915. [African American][Slavery][Education] Woodson, Carter G. The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861 is a foundational text in the scholarly study of Black education under slavery. As educator and activist Carter G. Woodson's first published book, it established the methodological and intellectual framework that would earn him recognition as the "Father of Black History." Drawing upon government records, missionary reports, denominational archives, and abolitionist writings, Woodson reconstructs the sustained efforts of enslaved and free African Americans to obtain literacy and formal instruction despite statutory prohibitions and racial terror. He argues forcefully for Black agency and intellectual aspiration in the antebellum period, challenging prevailing early twentieth-century narratives that minimized or distorted African American educational achievement. Woodson, Carter G. The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1915. First edition. Original navy blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board. Woodson organizes the study into two major periods: the era before 1835, when public debate persisted regarding the propriety and consequences of Black education, and the period after 1835, when Southern states increasingly enacted laws criminalizing the instruction of enslaved people and restricting free Black education. By examining education within broader religious, economic, and political developments, he demonstrates how literacy became a central tenant racial self-determination. Published during the height of Jim Crow segregation and only decades after the collapse of Reconstruction, the work asserts education as a fundamental human right and as a central instrument of collective advancement. Woodson, among the first African Americans to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University, demonstrated a curiosity and passion for Black pedagogy that would inform the founding of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and the institutionalization of Black History Month. Rubbing to corners and spine ends with minor fraying at head and foot of spine; inner hinges cracked but holding; text block clean and unmarked; loss to rear endpaper not affecting text. Overall good condition. A cornerstone first edition in the formal academic study of African American education before the Civil War.

Description
London: William Heinemann, 1890. First edition. Very Good +. Number 97 of 250 copies of the large paper edition, initialed by the author with his signature butterfly monogram on the limitation page. Original cloth backed boards with gilt stamping on the front board and spine, and black titling on the spine. A Very Good+ copy with slight wear to the front board and some foxing to the end papers, but unrestored and text generally clean. A historical record of an artist's vendetta against popular and professional critics. "A classic in the literature of insult and denigration...it contains the deadly sarcasm and stinging remarks of one of the wittiest men of the nineteenth century. Whistler not only refused to tolerate misunderstanding by critics and the so-called art-loving public--but launched into vicious counter attacks as well" (Dover). Extracts from the infamous Whistler v. Ruskin libel case are among the highlights of the text, as are his scathing and contemptuous responses to critics from Oscar Wilde to newspaper editors. "As a historical document, it is the best statement of the new aesthetics versus the old guard academics, and it helped greatly in shaping the modern feeling toward art" (Dover). Very Good +.

Stapled mimeographed leaves printed rectos only. 58pp. Some foxing and moderate wear on the first and last leaves, very good. An adaptation of the Broadway drama that featured Gary Cooper and Shirley Booth. The play displays extensive textual corrections in pencil by the director of the play, Homer Fickett. Booth won a Tony Award for Best Actress in the 1950 Broadway play, and went on to star in the 1952 film (adapted by Ketti Frings) for which she also won an Oscar for Best Actress. Robert Anderson, who did the adaptation, is best known for his own Broadway plays including *Tea and Sympathy* (1953), *You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running* (1967), and *I Never Sang for My Father* (1968). The Theatre Guild on the Air began as an hour long dramatic series on radio that was adapted for television from 1953 to 1963 and sponsored by the United States Steel Corporation. The program's content mixed adaptations of traditional plays and original scripts by writers such as Rod Serling. The series featured many notable actors including Martin Balsam, Tallulah Bankhead, James Dean, Keir Dullea, Andy Griffith, Rex Harrison, Celeste Holm, Jack Klugman, Peter Lorre, Walter Matthau, Paul Newman, George Peppard, Johnny Carson, and many more. *OCLC* locates a single copy of this script, at the University of Virginia.

London: Macmillan, 1874. First edition. First edition. 2 volumes. 23cm; 447, 588 pages, 2 maps (one folding), and 50 wood-engraved plates. Bound in half red straight-grain morocco over marbled boards. Hinges and cap ends reinforced for strength, along with upper joint on volume 1. Scattered foxing. Map abraded near title, and one panel fold split. Explorer, social liberal, abolitionist, Samuel Baker was appointed by khedive Ismail the Magnificent to lead a military force up the Nile into the Sudan in 1869 to suppress the slave trade there. He was given the rank of Major General in the Ottoman Army and outfitted with 1,700 troops. The storied Florence Baker was also present. Basically, Baker spent five years establishing the Ottoman province of Equatoria and serving as its governor-general, until he ceded the post to Charles George "Chinese" Gordon (played by Charlton Heston in the movie "Khartoum"). Baker returned to London where he published this account. He remained at the outer fringes of Victorian society, rejected in part because of his unorthodox marriage (Florence Baker is said to have been rescued from a white slave market).

Description
Athens: Sylvia Ioannou Foundation, 2009. cloth, dust jacket. 9.75 x 13.25 inches. cloth, dust jacket. 358 pages. In its third edition, this catalogue covers a period of more than 300 years of printed European cartography concerning Greece. With nearly 4,000 maps listed alphabetically by the makers names and 500 black-and-white illustrations, this is the most inclusive cartographical bibliography produced about Greece from the period of 1477 to 1800. Maps are listed in alphabetical order under the name of the particular cartographer, publisher, and engraver. Variant maps also show some of the inaccuracies of the time including the Ptolemaic style of cartography for Greece. An area of special attention is the Eastern Mediterranean basin, which has been the center of the civilized European world for many centuries. The cartographic descriptions of the region were especially necessary during ancient times, and relevant maps of the area were followed up and developed by the efficient Byzantine administration. Such rich material was later used by European cartographers of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Like any other scientific and artistic activity of the period under review, cartography was influenced by the intense interest in Greece and enhanced by the revival of Greek culture and the flourishing of classical studies during and after the Renaissance. Available in Greece & the UK from AdVenture Publishing.
