Description
1575. DE BRY, Johann Theodor and J. I. DE BRY. Nova Alphati Effictio histories ad singulas literas correspondentibus, et toreumate Bryanaeo artificiose in aes incises illustrate…. Engraved title-page, 24 elaborately engraved plates of letters, all with grotesque Mannerist ornamentation. 4to., 325 x 212 mm, bound by Rivière in full crushed brown morocco, triple gilt fillet on covers, floral gilt ornaments in corners, spine with intricate floral tooling in compartments, a.e.g. Frankfurt: [De Bry], 1595. First Edition of this celebrated and rare Renaissance Alphabet Book. "Elles représentent un grand Alphabet majuscule dont les lettres sont formées par découpures mouvementées ornées de figures de trophées, d'oiseaux, de fleurs et de fruits" (Guilmard, Les Maîtres Ornemanistes, p. 368). The letters appear in uppercase and are embedded within elaborate ornamentation consisting of Biblical figures, nymphs, fauns, musical instruments, cherubs, lovers, insects, fruits, birds, trophies, fish, lobsters, flowers, splendid entrelacs and luxurious arabesques. These extravagant illustrations are characterized by a disintegration of reality, in which the forms have been redistributed in accordance with the fantasy of the De Bry brothers. The mixture of grotesque, classical and symbolic imagery executed with supreme artistic bravado elevates this work to the pinnacle of published ornamental alphabet books. Each engraving is accompanied by a letterpress text in German and Latin on the verso, where the subject matter is identified. The engravings are individually "signed" with "J.T.B. fe." A second edition of the work appeared at Cologne in 1613. The rarity of this first edition is attested by the recent facsimile of it (Ravensburg, 1997). No copies sold at auction as listed by ABPC; OCLC lists 7 copies in America (at Houghton, Morgan Library, NYPL, Walters Art Gallery, RISD, Newberry and the University of Virginia). There are also 7 copies listed in European institutions. This copy had the engravings cut out and mounted during the nineteenth century on large papier Hollande in a folio format. However, the size of the cut-out sheets (195 x 150 mm) remains fully intact; the folio sheets measure 325 x 212 mm. Some insignificant spots to interleaved sheets, binding with minor rubbing to extremities. This copy lacks the two dedication leaves, which includes the text to the letter A on the verso of the second leaf. A desirable copy nonetheless. PROVENANCE: Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878) with his private ex-libris, his sale Christie's London 1958, Lot 59 and with the Nether Pollok "Arts of Design" ex-libris. Berlin Katalog 5281. Guimard, Les Maîtres Ornemanistes, p. 368, No. 38. Bonacini 292 ("estremamente rara"). Brunet I, 1309. BMC German 161. See: Becker, The Practice of Letters, The Hofer Collection of Writing Manuals, 1514-1800, for the 1596 German edition of Alphabeten.

Not examined out of the frame but appears to be Fine
Description
5 July 1815. Framed Manuscript. Not examined out of the frame but appears to be Fine. A one-page (8" x 10") lengthy AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED by Wordsworth from a poem by Fulke Greville (Lord Brooke), a contemporary and friend of poet Philip Sidney. In full: "The chief use, then in Man of that he knows Is his painstaking for the good of all; Not fleshly weeping for our own made woes, Not laughing from a melancholy gall, Not hating from a Soul that overflows In bitterness, breathed forth from inward thrall; But sweetly rather to ease, loose, or bind, As need requires, this frail, fallen human kind. Lord Brooke./Peter House July 5th 1815/Wm Wordsworth." It is clear why Wordsworth might have chosen these words of Brooke's--"Man's Service" from A TREATISE OF HUMANE LEARNING--to write as the two shared the notion that while knowledge might bring happiness, it also increases susceptibility to suffering and self-torment. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Wordsworth to an overall size of 22" x 18". Fulke Greville (1554-1628) was a close friend of Sir Philip Sidney and a great patron of letters. Most of his works were not published until after his murder by a servant who thought he had been omitted from his master’s will. Some believe Greville is the true author of several plays attributed to William Shakespeare.

Description
Mesa, Arizona, 1947. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 9". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 35 black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5" with some captions. Near fine album with fine photographs. A photo album detailing an "Indian Celebration" in Mesa Arizona in 1947. The album beings with a cut out from the program of a Native American in traditional dress with "Indian Celebration Dec. 4-5-6-7 Mesa Arizona" underneath. Following this is a clipping which reads, "Husky Mark Vest of the Maricopa tribe, standing well over six feet, will be one of the hundreds of performers to be seen each night through Sunday at the first National Indian Celebration in Mesa." The rest of the album features photographs from the events including a parade through town, dancing, music, and people in traditional Native American dress. Other pages include clippings from the program from the events and local newspapers one of which shows a "Hopi dance chanter and a Hopi dancer;" another reads "Indian Squaws from Ute, Navajo, and Laguna Tribes." One photograph portrait of a man reads "Kolachaftewa, chief of the Hopi Buffalo clan" and another shows Tony Whitecloud the "founder of the modern Hoop Dance." A modest but interesting collection of photographs following a Native American cultural event in the 1940s.

Description
Bayside, Patuisset Island,Massachusetts, 1916. Hardcover. Near Fine. 6.5" x 8" notebook. Good only with loose boards, tears, and worn edges. A composition book converted for use as a guest book for a family's vacation cottage, listed as "Bay Side Cottage," on Patuisset Island, Massachusetts between 1902 until 1916 entitled "Haps and Mishaps of Bayside-onners and Friends." The book includes an extensive list of signatures some of which are accompanied by trip details, magazine and newspaper clippings, and 14 sepia toned photographs. Patuisset Island, a town used mostly as a summer community, is a section of Cape Cod, Massachusetts that becomes an island during high tide and whose beaches have been a favorite vacation spot for New Englanders since the late 1800s. In an Entry dated July of 1906, Delia J. Crane writes, "rainy days - foggy days - dog days - cool days; but no dull days at Patuisset. May there be many more, but pleasant ones." The photos show the cottage, vacationers boating, gardening, and people taking in the sun on the front porch. An interesting look at turn of the century Massachusetts and its vacationers.

Description
London: Ernest Nister, 1907. Stories that Transform Before Your Eyes - Ernest Nister's Magical Pull-Tab Fairy Tales [TRANSFORMATION BOOK]. BINGHAM, Clifton. Surprise Pictures from Fairy Land. Verses by Clifton Bingham. London: Ernest Nister, New York: E.P. Dutton & Co, [1907] (code no. 1861). Quarto (9 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches; 248 x 185 mm.). [16] pp. With six movable tab-operated color plates featuring triple-action transformations. Original glazed pictorial boards with gray cloth backstrip, pale blue patterned endpapers. Inner hinges professionally strengthened; minimal rubbing to corners and board edges. A remarkably well-preserved example of this scarce and highly engaging movable book. Clifton Bingham's charming verse retellings of beloved fairy tales and nursery rhymes are accompanied by black-and-white line illustrations throughout the text and six vividly printed color transformation plates. Each movable illustration is operated by a pull tab and reveals a sequence of three scenes that follow the narrative progression of the story. Among the highlights is the episode from Little Red Riding Hood, where the initial scene shows the young girl being prepared by her mother for her journey. The first pull of the tab reveals her encounter with the Wolf in the forest, while the second transformation dramatically changes the image to the familiar scene of the Wolf disguised in her grandmother's bed. Other subjects include Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo-Peep, Hey-Diddle-Diddle, Mother Hubbard, and The Three Bears. These intricate mechanical plates - printed in Bavaria using delicate layered paper mechanisms - are characteristic of the celebrated production methods employed by Ernest Nister. Because the thin paper components and pull-tabs were easily damaged through use, surviving copies with intact and functioning movables are increasingly uncommon. All movable plates in the present copy have been professionally re-tabbed and remain in perfect working order. The contents are clean and fresh, making this an exceptional example of an early twentieth-century transformation book.

Description
1904. With Illustrations by Frank E. Schoonover. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1904. Original red cloth. First Edition of this tale of the Reconstruction Era -- the author's fifth book, and the concluding volume in a trilogy (following VOICE OF THE PEOPLE of 1900 and THE BATTLE-GROUND of 1902) that deals with life in Virginia from the end of the Civil war until the turn of the century. THE DELIVERANCE deals with the Blake family, prosperous landowners for over two centuries, who after the war are defrauded by the white overseer managing their property and wind up having to switch homes with him -- he buys their estate at auction, while the Blakes move into his former house. Ellen Glasgow, born and raised in Richmond, would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1942, for IN THIS OUR LIFE. This is a fine, bright copy of the first book that brought Glasgow some real popular success.
