n.p.: n.p., 1955. Fine. Preliminary painting for 'Baby Animals' ca. 1955. On paper. Measures approx. 8 by 16 inches, in a mat 12 by 20 inches. Signed by Garth Williams. Overall fine condition and with marginal notes by Williams indicating color values. The illustration shows an elephant carrying bears, a mouse, a raccoon, a fox, and followed by a kangaroo, and a giraffe with two long-tailed passengers. 'Baby Animals' was printed by Simon and Schuster (with a different design) in 1956, and is still in print.

Scattered browning, foxing, old bookplate of Bernard Junisc (?) inside front cover, top corner of first few dozen pages v. slightly nibbled, marbled endpapers. Two volumes in one, bound without the second title. xiv, (2), 372, 367pp. A nouvelle edition. Often noted as having been first published in 1765 (or 1762) but maybe through a confusion with the associated Dictionnaire Domestique Portatif (an ad for this and other portatif books appears before the title page). The first located edition was 1767. Cagle 162 (1767 ed.), Bitting 5543, Oberle (2) 98, Vicaire 276 Often lost among the more original (Menon, Massialot) or charming (Le Cuisinier Gascon) cookbooks that preceded it and the post-revolutionary works that followed (Beauvilliers, Careme), the Dictionnaire Portatif marks an interesting, if largely derivative, moment in French cuisine. Like the contemporary (also anonymous) Manuel des officiers de bouche, it serves as a summation of centuries of French cuisine from Taillevent and the Menagier to the brink of the revolution, all in a handy alphabetical form. First and last few pages are foxed. Binding is exposed, but intact and secure. A few pages have small pen marks in the margins. However, the majority of the pages are clean. Signed on the title page by John Stephen Vaughan (1853-1925), the English Catholic bishop of Sebastopolis, and later, of Salford. Vaughan was the brother of Herbert Vaughan, who was also a Catholic bishop. John Stephen Vaughan was also a mathematics professor for a brief period at St. Bede's College, after which he did missionary work in Australia. This booklet addresses the political threats facing Pope Pius IX in Italy at the time of publication and how those threats affected the entire Church. Bede was the Archbishop of Sydney.
