Description
1894. Glasgow: David Bryce and Son, 1894. 4to, xvi, 316 pp. followed by Frederick Laing's colored hieroglyphic Bible, consisting of 94 plus 184 mounted plates, four to a page, comprising stories from the Old and New Testaments. Original tan linen buckram over beveled boards, decoratively stamped in gilt and black. Top edge gilt. Edges of boards a bit browned. Near fine in the original blue cloth printed dust jacket which has light edge wear. § First edition of the definitive study, and in itself a fascinating and beautiful book. "A hieroglyphic Bible replaces some of the words of the text with pictures in an attempt to tell a story in a direct, simple, and interesting way. Such Bibles became very popular in the late eighteenth century as an easy means of teaching the Scripture to the young." The study begins with the first German Bible of 1687 and continues up to 1893. The reproduction at the end of Laing's colored hieroglyphic Bible is especially well executed and most useful for study of the usual symbols of the time.

Description
New York, 1795. Single leaf notarized document (32.5 x 20.5 cm.), printed and manuscript text on recto only. With embossed paper seal of the notary. Sworn testimony of a Peter Adams, regarding an agreement to settle a dispute over transport of one hundred barrels of fish. The fish, located in New Carlisle, Quebec (north of New Brunswick), to New York. The parties, Thomas Sherrer, who had attempted to ship the barrels, and John Claswell, captain of the vessel that was to transport the barrels, appear to have reached an agreement, which is recorded here, and notarized. The document is signed by Peter Adams, and then notarized by John Roorbach, Justice for the City and County of New York. Wear along fold creases, and some light water staining at same; some edge wear to leaf. A bit of minor paper loss at the seal, and at the center of the folds. Good.

Description
Cincinnati: Cranston and Stowe, 1851. Reprint. Octavo (17.5cm); dark blue honeycomb cloth, stamped in gilt on spine; 255pp, frontis. Spine slightly sunned; light rubbing/wear and soiling to boards. Text yellowing at extremities; some underlining (in pen) and creasing to pages. Gift inscription on ffep (dated 1895). Else contents clean and tight, Very Good or Better. Reverend Daniel Wise shares his thoughts, opinions, and "fraternal affection" on how women can live their best lives. His advice boils down to-you guessed it: Staying away from fops and clowns, shunning the material life for one of Biblical enrichment, maybe becoming a Sunday school teacher, etc. Interestingly, the advice is not completely hokey; Wise also encourages young ladies to practice self-reliance, courage, and confidence. This copy is most likely a reprint, given the mismatch of publisher names on the title page and frontispiece, and the 1895 inscription date; an exact edition and publication date are otherwise difficult to ascertain.
