Dust jacket just a bit worn at edges, still an excellent copy. Often seen as Greene's great post-war work, The Quiet American follows Thomas Fowler's relationship with idealistic American CIA agent Alden Pyle, one which intrudes on both professional and personal ground. The work drew on Greene's experience as a war correspondent in French Indo-China for The Times and Le Figaro from 1951 to 1954, and the work is dedicated to two friends he made while there (one of which is named after the leading female character). It has since been adapted into two films, one in 1958 and another in 2002 starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

First English Trade Edition (issued after the American edition and also after a 40-copy private issue of the English galley proofs). Begun in 1896, and in effect completing the trilogy begun with ALMAYER'S FOLLY and AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS, "THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career almost until the end of his life" [Cagle]. This copy is in the standard (primary) binding: the spine lettering is in gilt, and the front cover publisher's device and border are in blind. (There is a secondary binding with black lettering and border, and with no front cover device.) Sioux City, 1878. Very good.. Broadsheet, 6.25 x 5 inches. Minor soiling, lightly toned. Trimmed unevenly along bottom edge. Broadsheet advertising the land services of Daniel H. Talbot, a speculator and land agent based in Sioux City, Iowa. "Having but recently made a visit to the state, and with the aid of good, reliable men residing in Texas, we can inform you as near as any one can do that which you may expect to find upon a personal investigation...differing from other portions of the South, [Texas] is blessed with healthful, temperate climate, having a population composed in part of enterprising settlers from all portions of the Northern states. Texas, unlike the old Southern states, is progressive, and is rapidly taking her place among the more advanced states of the Union." The verso offers to make advances on veteran homestead claims, paying cash for claims. Talbot was a land speculator who moved to Sioux City in 1870, where he invested heavily in the area and surrounds, though he lost his fortune in the Panic of 1893. Rare and ephemeral -- we locate two copies in OCLC, at Yale and SMU.

With bookplate of Louis H. Roddis to front pastedown and ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Folding plate with hand-colored image of foxglove after half title. Shelved in Room G. William Withering (1741-1799), English botanist, chemist, and physician, was the first to conduct systematic experiments on the effects of foxglove (Digitalis) on the human heart. The resulting work, 'An Account of the Foxglove and Some of Its Medical Uses,' is a foundational work of pharmacology. This copy is from the collection of Naval Captain Louis H. Roddis Sr. (1888-1969), a medical doctor who authored several articles, including one on William Withering and the medicinal use of digitalis. 1383322. Special Collections.
