London: Henry Kent Causton, 1839 According to the title page, this copy is "Second edition, considerably enlarged, with plates." It originally appeared in Paris as Education physique des jeunes filles (1835). Another English edition came out in 1838, from which the present edition is enlarged. It is unclear whether there are revisions in the text from the earlier edition, or whether the only change is the addition of plates. Contemporary crushed red morocco stamped in gilt on cover, spine, and back. Edges gilt. Two silk ribbon markers. . Octavo. With three engraved plates. Minor foxing on plates and some stains to endpapers. Very good or better. Treatise on Physical Education focuses on young girls' physical education, with particular attention paid to young women fulfilling "the duties of her ordination," or maintaining physical health to procreate (iv). The book's introduction states that girls' physical education is a topic which needs more attention, and that physical education serves as preparation for the rest of ones' life. Moving chronologically from childhood to puberty, the book's sections cover topics such as growth, diet, vaccinations, and gymnastics.

Quarter sheep, gilt spine, marbled boards ca. 1834, hinges cracked, lower extremity of spine chipped, light edgewear. Occasional light spotting, two small holes in pp. 127-128 affecting a few letters (sense remains clear), but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Miss Mugford from Mr. Warren Boston Oct. 9 1835." First Edition of the first American manual of conchology. The author, John Warren, was an Englishman who sold shells and other collectibles in Boston as well as to other collectors in the United States. His book organizes shells according to both the Linnean and Lamarckian systems of classification. The recipient of this copy was likely Sarah S. Mugford of Salem, an invalid poet, dressmaker and needlepoint artist; see S. M. Worcester, Triumph in Trial: A Memorial of Sarah S. Mugford (1862). Garrison-Morton.com 12900. .
