Description
Venice: F. Valgrisi and N. Moretti, 1603. Early Printing. Hardcover. Some of the impressions are weak, but most are quite presentable. Trimmed at the top close to the text and plate lines, affecting one line of text in the dedication; other margins quite adequate. Vellum soiled. Very Good or better. Large octavo (7" x 10") bound in early full vellum, [16] 654 [32] pages. The complete and corrected ORLANDO FURIOSO, with Ruscelli's dedication to the Duke of Ferrara dated 1556 and an account of the life of Ariosto by Battista Pigna. Illustrated with an engraved title page, 51 full-page woodcuts, ornamental headpieces, and initial letters. The woodcuts, within decorative borders, are after the designs of Dossa Dossi, the Ferrarese painter, and are printed from the blocks of the first Valgrisi quarto editon of 1556. First published in 1516, this classic Italian romantic epic influenced many later works including Spenser's THE FAERIE QUEENE and Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. The action takes place against the background of the war between Charlemagne and his Christian paladins and the Saracen army which is attempting to invade Europe. However, Ariosto has little concern for historical or geographical accuracy, and the poem wanders at will from Japan to the Hebrides, as well as including many fantastical and magical elements, such as a trip to the moon and an array of fantastical creatures including a gigantic sea monster called the orc and the hippogriff. The poem grew in popularity as well in size after Ariosto's death, increasing from 40 to 46 cantos in 1532 and finally to the finished form of 51 cantos.

Description
London: James Robins & Co, 1828. First edition. Wraps. Very good. Five issues. 12mo. Original printed wrappers. Each with an original woodcut. Three are unquestionably by Cruikshank, with his original signature; the remaining two are in his style and are likely by him as well. No. 1, January 1827, 'King of the Hartz", with the signature: By Geo Cruikshank, 1827. No. 5, May, 1827, :More Mornings at Bow Street", unsigned but with a pencil notation "Reid 3549". No. 8, August, 1827, "The Priest of Rothdunan" with": By Geo Cruikshank, 1827. The upper wrapper is also signed: An lllustration by Geo Cruikshank. No. 11, November, 1827, "German Popular Stories" with the signature: By Geo Cruikshank 1827. No. 14, January 1828, The Gomulagh. Douglas states that only four woodcuts in this series were by Cruikshank, but Dodd and Cohn have pointed out that this statement is in error, for at least one other woodcut is known with Cruikshank's signature,. The five volumes here have three woodcuts signed by the artist as well as one upper wrapper. They are housed in a worn cloth chemise with a printed label stating that all of them have a woodcut by Cruikshank. Dodd points out (p. 28), that the owner of these and similar "possesses evidence of new and hitherto unrecognized Cruikshank material". The chemise bears the bookplate of A. M. Cohn who issued the Cruikshank Catalogue Raisonné. It also includes a label with the handwritten note, likely in Cohn's hand, "Cat. Rais. 656", The bookplate has a piece lacking. Cohn, 656. .

London: J. Redmayne, 1671. Later (7th) ed. Engraved general title, each part with separate title. Contemporary calf, Oxford-style binding with ruled borders on covers. Ownership inscription of E. Vaughan (alum of Eton), several small animal figures cut from another (contemporary) book and laid in. Seventh edition of one of the most successful text books of the seventeenth century. Initially published in 1647, the author defines logic as an intellectual habit of the mind, which makes discourses and distinguishes truth from falsehood (translation from the Latin, p. 1). Stier’s concept of logic and his theory of method comes directly from Giacomo Zabarella, as he states that method, which can be either synthetic or analytic, is the instrument for acquiring knowledge of things. Stier first explains the fundamentals of logic with a focus on language, then further treats ethics, physics, metaphysics, and finally astronomy. This work played a fundamental role in the spreading of Paduan Aristotelianism in English universities. Stier (1599-1648) was one of the most prominent German logicians in the Aristotelian tradition whose syncretic works were successful in the British Isles. Zabarella (1533-1589) was the most prominent figure of Italian Aristotelianism. Known for his writing on logic and methodology, he developed the regressus method, which the Renaissance Aristotelians considered as the proper means of obtaining knowledge. At the turn of the seventeenth century, Zabarella’s writings were reprinted in Germany, where his philosophy had a notable following, especially among Protestant Aristotelian authors. Wing, 5542.

Description
London: Henry Colburn, 1828. FIRST EDITION. Engraved frontispieces in first three volumes. Beautifully bound in half-morocco and cloth, gilt lettering and decoration on spine, blind tooling, red stained fore-edge, marbled endpapers; interiors in excellent condition with minor foxing. From the library of John George Fenwick with his armorial bookplate. First edition, the first printing of Thomas Burton’s diary. The originally anonymous manuscript diary arrived at the British Museum in the early nineteenth century. John Towill Rutt (1760–1841), an editor and member of the Society for Constitutional Information, transcribed and commented on the diary. Rutt was also responsible for ascribing the diary to Burton, though that claim was challenged throughout the nineteenth until it was ultimately confirmed. Burton (fl. 1656–1661) was a Member of Parliament, representing Westmorland during the protectorate parliaments of Oliver Cromwell and his son, Richard. During the Restoration in 1660, he supported Charles II, and was likely the same Thomas Burton who was appointed undersearcher in the Port of London and later knighted. Rutt also added excerpts from the diary of Guibon Goddard who served in the 1654-5 parliament. Burton’s diary covers the periods between December 3, 1656 and June 27, 1657, January 20 to February 4, 1658, and January 27 to April 22, 1659. The diary remains an invaluable resource for the insight it offers during the two protectorate parliaments.

Description
Verona: Edizione Mondadori. Fine in Very Good+ dj. 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. [a nice clean book with no discernible wear; the jacket has a number of scuff marks near the top of the rear panel]. (color illustrations) An interesting little book, which (its English-language title notwithstanding) appears to have been published only in Italy, with an Italian text (although it clearly was authorized by Disney, to which the copyright is credited). The cover blurb, "Quattromila anni di arte immortale con Paperino, Topolino & Co.," translates as "Four thousand years of immortal art with Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse & Co." The conceit of the book is that some piece of artwork (often by well-known artists with distinctive styles, e.g. Warhol, Lichtenstein, Picasso, Brancusi, etc.) is reproduced on the left-hand page, and on the facing page is a "Disneyfied" version -- either a direct imitation (such as Goofy standing in for the Mona Lisa, as depicted in the jacket illustration) or something more along the lines of "inspired by" or "in the style of." It's great fun, and absolutely no knowledge of Italian is required to appreciate the book. (It's possible that there was a U.S. edition of this book under a different title, but if so I've been unable to find it -- or maybe the whole idea of it was considered a little too esoteric for an American readership.) .

Description
New Haven: View from the Bottom/Yale Strike News/Committee to Defend the Panthers, 1970. Newspaper. Near Fine. A clean, very well-preserved copy of this uncommon single-issue newspaper --"an information newspaper"-- published in advance of the May Day rally (May 1-3, 1970), held at the New Haven Green. Published jointly by "View from the Bottom", "Yale Strike News" and "Committee to Defend the Panthers", "May Day New Haven" was designed to offer medical, legal and housing information (as well as a schedule, a map and very strong pro-Rally commentary), all in the lead-up to what was expected to be a major anti-war and anti-police gathering. The arrest and detaining by the New Haven police of Bobby Seale and 7 other Black Panthers was also a major reason, if not the single most compelling rallying cry-- behind the demonstration. This copy shows one clean, even fold (as issued) but no wear or soiling to speak of. Crisp and Near Fine. An impressive piece of poilitical ephemera, centering on the role of both New Haven and Yale in response to the activism of the 60s and early 70s.

Description
1987. unbound. Typed and signed letter from Ted Turner to Washington Post columnist Tom Shales. Turner writes "Just read your story on 'Charge of the Light Brigade' and am glad we've done something you like". The correspondence was in response to a surprisingly positive review Shales gave to the colorization of the 1936 Errol Flynn film Washington Post. He felt the "muted, subtle and... powdery" colors improved the desert adventure spectacle, serving as a deft enhancement rather than an abomination. Robert Edward Turner III was an American businessman, television producer, media proprietor, and philanthropist. He founded CNN, the first 24-hour cable news channel, and WTBS, which pioneered the superstation concept in cable television. Turner also founded the television networks TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. This is a new item from the collection of Television critic Tom Shales (1944 - 2024). Shales was an incisively funny Washington Post columnist, he earned the nickname Terrible Tom and had the clout to make or break shows. Shales won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1988. During his three-decade career those in the industry considered him both a kingmaker and a high executioner in an era when network television's hold on American culture was at it's peak. Time magazine called him "brilliant, thoughtful, incisive and screamingly funny...also, vicious, infuriating, cruel and unfair". His thrice-weekly Washington Post TV column, 'On the Air,' syndicated in 59 other newspapers. The Tom Shales collection includes letters, cards and correspondence from celebrated television and entertainment legends, newscasters and politicians, including letters from Norman Lear, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan O'Brien, Garry Shandling, Fred Rogers, Carol Burnett, David Brinkley, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and many more. Oakland, CA: By the author, 1934. Very good. Typed letter, signed in ink; 12 x 8 1/2; single sheet, text to recto only; mild, uniform age-toning; old, horizontal fold lines; in very good condition. Albert Adelson (1850 - 1943) was a Russian-American resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, allegedly claiming to be one of the founders of the Russian Republic and author of their constitution. Known for his crusades against social injustices and for his relentless letter-writing to US presidents, senators, and other political figures, in this particular letter he addressed "His Excellency, President of the United States," in connection with President Franklin Roosevelt's 1934 visit to Devils Lake in North Dakota. The president's campaign against the drought and the desperate economic situation in the midst of the Great Depression prompted Adelson to offer a "genious invention, titled: Overhead-Irrigation and Fire-Extinguisher Wizard." According to him, it could cover the whole country and "120 million souls in the United States of America, will surely be saved ALIVE!!!" Begging for the Government's backing, Albert ended his letter with: "I remain, the best U. S. officially qualified citizen."
