Description
Amsterdam: Chez Jean Néaulme, 1762. Aamsterdam [i.e. Paris]: Chez Jean Néaulme, 1762. First edition, twelvemo issue (priority between this and the octavo is still subject to discussion). Four twelvemo volumes (6 1/2 x 3 7/8 inches; 164 x 100 mm). [2], viii, [2], 466; [4], 407, [1, blank]; [4], 357, [1, blank], [361]-384; [4], 455, [1, blank], [4, "Privilegie"] pp. Bound with no the half-title in Volume I as usual, but with them present in Vols. II-IV (as called for). Blank leaf P12 excised in Volume III as usual. Leaf H4 misbound between H8 and H9 in volume II. Five engraved plates (including frontispiece in each volume) by De Longueil, Louis le Grand, and J.J. Pasquier, after Ch. Eisen. Titles printed in red and black. Contemporary calf. Boards triple-ruled in gilt with floral corner devices. Spines stamped in gilt and each volume with two red morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Gilt board edges. Marbled endpapers. All edges dyed red. Some rubbing to boards and edges. Spines with some flaking. Boards with some soiling, mainly volume IV. Some chipping to heads and tails of spines and some light repair to head and tail of spines of volumes I and IV. A marginal tear to leaves N9 and N10 of volume II, tear just barely touching text on N9 and not touching text on N10. Overall a very good and crisp copy. The publication history of the book is complicated. According to McEachern "In November 1761 [publisher Nicolas-Bonaventure] Duchesne signed an agreement with Jean Néaulme, a Dutch publisher chosen... to undertake an edition parallel to Duchesne's for distribution outside France... Duchesne's first edition appeared in two formats: a duodecimo with the false imprint 'A Amsterdam, Chez Jean Neaulme' and an octavo with the false imprint 'A La Haye, Chez Jean Néaulme.' The sheets of the duodecimo edition were printed first, and the pages then re-imposed for printing in octavo..." Although it is suggested that the twelvemo edition was printed first but the octavo edition may have been issued first, McEachern goes on to say "the question of the order of printing has not yet been resolved to everyone's satisfaction." (McEachern, Bibliography of the Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 16-17), A first edition of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's (1712-1778) seminal work on education. While Jean Néaulme of Amsterdam is given as the printer, it was, in actuality, printed by Parisian printer and publisher Nicolas Bonaventure Duchesne. When this work was published in the spring of 1762, it was banned by the Paris parliament and burned in public in Rousseau's home town of Geneva and in Paris, forcing Rousseau to flee. This title was referred to by Goethe as "the natural gospel of education" and had great influence on Rousseau's European contemporaries, especially educators. Despite the controversy, Émile contributed mightily to the Romantics appreciation of nature and to the notion of the "noble savage." "To be good is to exist in accordance with the intrinsic potentialities of one's nature, and Émile seeks to trace the natural development of a human being brought up in the country away from the nefarious influence of contemporary social life. From this point of view the work is not just a manual of education but, as Rousseau himself points out, a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature. It is less concerned with laying down the practical details of a specific pedagogic method than with describing the fundamental principles which underlie the whole of man's development from infancy to maturity. Rousseau's ultimate object is to teach the art of living, for man's first duty, he says, is to be human" (The Encyclopedia of Philosophy). McEachern 1b. Dufour 187. Printing and the Mind of Man 207 note (entry for the Du contract social). HBS 68672. $5,000.

Description
24/05/1798. At the time of the outset of the French Revolution, Haiti was the French colony of Saint Domingue. The colony featured large slave plantations that generated the cash crops of sugar, coffee, and cotton. This was a very profitable colony to the French, owing largely to the sugar plantations. By the 1780s nearly two-thirds of French trade flowed through Saint Domingue, and the island supplied nearly half of Europe with sugar. The Haitian Revolution was a complex web of affairs. At one point there were over a half dozen parties involved, all fighting for different purposes. Alliances were fickle, as entities changed allegiance based on who was offering the best deal. The revolution began not only as a slave revolt, but also as a class struggle among white landowners, non-landowners, and the free black landowners. The French military became involved, as did the British and Spanish forces. In August 1791 a full-fledged slave revolt began. In March 1793, the French assembly granted full rights and French citizenship to free black people and those of mixed race. The white planter class however objected and further violence erupted. The French sent military forces and a new governor to enact these measures. At this point England and Spain joined the fight. While the English sought to restore order and sided with the white social class, the Spanish, who controlled the other side of the island, saw an opportunity in the dysfunction. When the French in 1794 ordered all slaves freed, the ire turned against the English, who now sent more forces to quell the revolt. In 1795, the Spanish signed a deal with the French and exited the conflict.Toussaint Louverture, a former slave, emerged as the leader of the slaves seeking their freedom in the Haitian Revolution. He drew inspiration from the ongoing French Revolution and previous American Revolution to evolve his group’s demands and ultimate goals. At the same time, the French Directoire government which now ruled France was considerably less revolutionary than it had been. Suspicions began to brew that it might reconsider the abolition of slavery. In November 1797, Louverture wrote again to the Directoire, assuring them of his loyalty, but reminding them firmly that abolition must be maintained. And for the British, the benefit began to be outweighed by the cost, an enormous loss of life. On April 30, 1798, Louverture signed a treaty with British Army officer Thomas Maitland, exchanging the withdrawal of British troops from western Saint-Domingue (Haiti) in return for a general amnesty for the French counter-revolutionaries in those areas. In May, Port-au-Prince was returned to French rule in an atmosphere of order and celebration.Gingembre-Trop-Fort, also a former slave, was one of Louverture's loyal officers. He was described with exaggerated uniform accoutrements, a sword almost as tall as he was, wearing “large and heavy rings” and with a pillow to his saddle already “covered in velours with gold fringes.” Interestingly, his name in French means ""too strong ginger.""Letter signed, May 24, 1798, Port Republicain (former name of Port-au-Prince), to ""Citizen Deneyve, Commissary (Quartermaster) of Wars for the Army of the Northwest Coast"", with integral address leaf.  ""Citoyen Commissary, please pay the 2nd Squadron of the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, Commanded by the Squadron Chief Gingembre.""Letters of Louverture are very uncommon. This is a particularly early one, having been signed before he took control over the entire country. This was not the end of the conflict, as tensions with France were about to increase and would test Louverture.

1920. [Women History] [Medicine] Early woman surgeon and hospital staff perform an operation. 6 doctors and nurses operate on a patient; notably, five of the staff members are women. c. 1920. Original silver gelatin print. 6.5 x 8.5 in., mounted on 8 x 10" board. Two surgeons were masks and appear to be mid-operation on a patient's abdomen; various tools such as forceps, clamps, and medical scissors can be seen on the operating bed and supply cart. Other medical staff work to prepare equipment for the procedure, sterilize tools, and monitor the anesthetized patient. Of all medical specialties, the most embattled for women is surgery; early on they faced a challenge obtaining education, training and facilities, as this field of medicine was considered least suitable for women's delicate nature. These young woman, then, defied the odds of their time to become doctors and work in surgery. Light abrasions to surface top left quadrant, affecting leftmost figure's head, center top, and center left edge. Wear to corners of board. Good to very good condition.
