16mo, original cloth with gilt title on top cover, illustrated with 30 lithographic portraits, 148, [4] pp. Some wear at extremities, top hinge somewhat weak, but still holding, one plate is loose, normal aging, some notes on endpapers; otherwise very good. Despite the fact that the title indicates volume one, this was the only edition published. While most of the text relates to biographies of illustrated officers, including a young Major General George B. McCellan, there are two pages dedicated to presenting Union and Rebel victories in the early part of the war.

Thus the commentary could be concentrated on amendments to the text and to philological and literary aspects of it. Accordingly, the reader who is interested mainly in the subjects discussed in the Scroll, will find these treated in great detail in the introduction with full references to the text itself in the footnotes, while one who is interested mainly in the philological and textural problems of the Scroll will find these delineated in the commentary with references to the chapters of the introduction."
