Very Good with mottling to cloth, old price written in color pencil to verso of front free endpaper and pages toned. A fantastic association copy between two female titans of children's literature of the late 19th and early 20th-centuries. Not to mention, books signed by Burnett are scarce.

Description
[Springfield?, 1860. Caption title, as issued. Disbound, else Very Good. This Illinois campaign document leads with the letter of Edward Bates, the old Missouri Know-Nothing, to Orville Browning, endorsing the Lincoln-Hamlin ticket, denouncing the "wanton and reckless" Democrats, asserting that "the national government has sovereign power over the Territories, and that it would be impolitic and unwise to use that power for the propagation of negro slavery." Lincoln is "a sound, safe, national man. He could not be sectional if he tried." Monaghan 27 records a separate printing of Bates's endorsement. Our document also prints the Republican, Douglas Democrat, and Breckinridge Democrat platforms; examines the pro-slavery record of Douglas's running mate, Herschel Johnson of Georgia; chronicles the disastrous results of Douglas's Squatter Sovereignty policy and his failed position on "The Everlasting Nigger Question;" and, finally, prints Lincoln's and Hamlin's letters of acceptance. FIRST EDITION. Monaghan 27 note. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Sabin, Miles, LCP.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Humphrey, Maud. First printing, quarto size, [46] pp. A collection of the nursery rhymes of Mother Goose, including classic children's verses such as "Jack and Jill", "Little Miss Muffett", and "Little Bo Peep", this volume is lusciously illustrated by American watercolourist Maud Humphrey (1868-1940); a very successful commercial illustrator, Humphrey was the mother of famed actor Humphrey Bogart, whom she would use as a model when he was a child. Throughout her career, Humphrey illustrated numerous books, calendars, and greeting cards, earning over $50,000 a year, a considerable sum at the time. Her sweet depictions of children perfectly capture the playfulness and charm of Mother Goose; each verse has its own colour illustration, with the text printed in calligraphic lettering. The beautiful, soft colours and contours of the illustrations create a unique reading of these beloved nursery rhymes. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter green cloth with light green paper boards, gilt lettering and colour illustrations by Maud Humphrey on the front and rear boards, frontispiece a colour illustration by Humphrey, featuring Little Bo Peep, title page with lettering in brown, blue, and pink with colour illustration, pink and blue decorative initial capitals throughout, text printed in brown calligraphic script, full-colour illustrations by Maud Humphrey throughout, printed on the rectos only except for the frontispiece; quarto size (11" by 9.25"), 46 unnumbered pages. ___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is clean with bright illustrations; some rubbing to the edges of the boards and the corners, head and tail of the spine bumped, light off-setting from the illustrations throughout, and a prior owner inscription on the front free endpaper. ___CITATION: Baumgarten p. 106. ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Derby, England: William Bemrose and Co, ca. 1830. FIRST EDITION. 140 x 88 mm. (5 1/2 x 3 3/8"). 34 pp. (inclusive of frontispiece leaf pasted down to front wrapper). ORIGINAL BLUE PRINTED WRAPPERS. With printer's device on title and upper wrapper and 22 woodcut illustrations (including "The Vain Goose" on the lower wrapper). Rear pastedown with book label of "AHA" (Albert A. Howard). Osborne Collection, p. 124. ◆Upper wrapper with a hint of soiling and a faint fold at one corner, occasional light offsetting internally, but AN OUTSTANDING COPY of a fragile item, most copies of which were no doubt destroyed by their intended audience. This is an exceptionally well-preserved copy of a charming early reader that begins with an alphabet; progresses to syllables; then to words of two, three, or four letters; then to brief paragraphs, mostly about animals, each accompanied by an illustration; and finally to a prayer and a hymn for morning and evening. Words of more than one syllable use hyphens to help new readers "sound them out." Printer William Bemrose (1792-1875) set up his press in Derby in 1826-27, and used the name of his young son, Henry Howe (b.1827), in the title of this work. There is something rather touching in the thought of a printer producing a first reader for his eldest child. Former owner Albert A. Howard (d. 2017) was a bibliophile and rare book cataloguer with a special interest in fine press books, finely illustrated books, children’s books, and chapbooks. This is a rare item: OCLC and COPAC locate just four copies, three in North America, while RBH and ABPC find none at auction..

Description
Montreal: Printed for the author, 1850. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. With 9 figures on 6 large folding plates. Contemporary cloth, original printed title pasted onto front cover. An excellent copy with the bookplate of the Fraser Institute Free Public Library of Montreal, presented by Mrs. Walter Bell, 1920, on the paste-down. First and only edition. The author attempts to solve the age-old challenge of the quadrature of the circle, which he notes has eluded such luminaries as Newton, Playfair, Euler, Lagrange, Legendre and Laplace. In ten lemmas (defined as a subsidiary or intermediate theorem in an argument or proof) and nine propositions, Fleming, a civil engineer, walks us through his proof. These propositions describe the figures in the plates. It is, ultimately, up to us, the readers, to determine whether he has succeeded in solving the challenge. Fleming (1815-1852) worked as an engineer on canals and promoted a trans-Canada railway. His interest in mathematics motivated him to publish this work as well as another short pamphlet entitled Geometrical solutions of the lengths and division of circular arcs: the quadrature of the circle, trisection of the angle, duplication of the cube, and the quadrature of the hyperbola in 1851. See Dictionary of Canadian Biography, VIII, 1851-1860.
