Includes: "José Clemente Orozco y el Horror" by Xavier Villarrutia; Ramón del Valle Inclán; Introduccion a la Pintura Mexicana; El Tejon y las Gallinas by Juan de la Cabada; Editorial board included: Miguel Prieto, Pablo Neruda, Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Romulo S. Gallegos, Juan Marinello. Title piece design by Miguel Prieto. The pages of this magazine were the first major typografic design by Prieto. See: "Miguel Prieto: Diseño Grafico", pg. 56. Sold as set El origen de la revista Romance guarda estrecha relación con la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939), que producirá la llamada Literatura del Exilio español. Dos amigos republicanos, Antonio Sánchez Barbudo y Lorenzo Varela, se propusieron desde la península, fundar una revista ya establecidos en México como exiliados. La nota distintiva de la publicación sería recoger las expresiones del movimiento cultural hispanoamericano El primer número apareció a los cinco meses de iniciada la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La revista fue una de las primeras ediciones de la empresa Edición y Distribución Iberoamericana de Publicación (Ediapsa), fundada por Rafael Giménez Siles y Martín Luis Guzmán. Romance fue de las primeras revistas que tuvieron corresponsales en Europa. En sus páginas registraban eventos culturales y artísticos de París, Madrid y otras ciudades. Cada uno de los números presentó secciones fijas, entre las que se encontraba la sección literaria, que generalmente refería a los textos del Siglo de Oro, aunque también figuraban poemas de reciente producción. En la sección de arte colaboraron José Clemente Orozco y José Guadalupe Posada, entre otros. La sección "Los libros por dentro" contenía valiosas críticas de libros nacionales y extranjeros. También hubo un espacio dedicado a artículos científicos comentados. La ruptura en la directiva ocurrió cuando Ediapsa quiso imponer como nuevo director a Martín Luis Guzmán, y tanto Antonio Sánchez Barbudo como Lorenzo Varela y los demás miembros decidieron abandonar la publicación. Text in Hebrew (mostly in Rashi script). Binding with wear along edges and soiling and scuffing on covers. Spine with two inches missing at tail. Starting at page 220. Interior age-toned with wax stains at latter part of the book, text unaffected, except page 200 at the top (3 words are not readable), some stains due to water exposure on lower left corner of last few pages. Two black and white photographs, each measuring 9¼" x 7 5/8" on larger card mounts. Photos very good with light foxing; mounts good and very good. Two images related to the dedication of the Odd Fellows building in Marshfield, Oregon in 1889. The building had an opera house on its second floor and burned to the ground in 1920. One photo shows the building itself, with a crowd outside. The other is a composite image of Odd Fellows members who are identified on the verso of the mount.
