Description
Palo Alto, CA: Midpeninsula Observer, 1967. Fine. Stop the Draft Week Portfolio Photo Collection. Small folio. Original printed paper wrapper with inner sleeves holding a loose suite of twenty photographs, including three double-page, documenting protestors and police clashing at the "Stop the Draft Week" protests in Oakland on October 16-20, 1967. Monochromatic photographs printed in a variety of colors on variously colored sheets, with images by David Anderson, Beth Bagby, Marlene Charyn, Stephen Hettenbach, John McChesney, Tina Ruffa, Maitland Sharpe, Chris Springman and William Warren. Fine, with a small snag to the wrapper at the top of the spine fold. This protest was among the earliest organized by the Anti-War Movement in opposition to the Vietnam War. On October 16, 3,000 protestors marched to the Oakland Army Induction center, staging a sit-in, and by the third day, their numbers swelled to 10,000. On October 20th, the police attacked the protestors with nightsticks in order to unblock the streets, injuring 20 and arresting 40, including folk-singer Joan Baez. The event's organizers would become known as the Oakland Seven, and were brought up on charges of conspiracy to trespass, commit a public nuisance, and resist, delay, and obstruct police officers. This portfolio was issued as a fundraiser for the Oakland Seven, who were ultimately acquitted in March, 1969.

Description
Pesaro: Stamperia Gavelliana, 1759. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo., 84 pp., with typographical diagram in text. Bound in old patterned wrappers. Fore-edge of one leaf shaved, with loss of 1-2 letters per line; a few dark spots on one page, without loss; mild dampstains. Overall good. First edition, second state, of this rare work on growing, curing, packaging and selling tobacco, written for the benefit of farmers in the Papal States who had two years earlier been given permission to cultivate it. Much of the information is based on methods of tobacco cultivation in Maryland and Virginia, although French and Persian methods are cited as well. Gavelli also details the process of manufacturing snuff in Italy, the prices of tobacco under the late monopoly, and the current rates for various types of tobacco in Amsterdam. A final section (pp. 67-76) covers the remedial virtues of tobacco, with the wise warning that the amount of tobacco used should be carefully watched, because "sopra l'uso, o l'abuso del Tabacco non si possono stabilire regole generali."* Arents III.816; Pritzel 3540.

Clark: The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd., 2011. xix, 460 pp. ISBN-13: 9781616191283; ISBN-10: 1616191287. Paperback. New. $39.95 * Magistrates and Pioneers collects eighteen essays (five of which are new) by the historian Warren M. Billings. They address the main areas of his research, nineteenth century Louisiana and seventeenth century Virginia. From Opechancanough, a seventeenth-century Indian chief to Sir William Berkeley, colonial governor of Virginia, to Edward Livingston, coauthor of Louisiana's first civil code, to the legendary Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Long, Billings brings to life the forces behind the legal development of these two historically distinctive states. Many of these are classic essays, all are essential to students of American legal history. Warren M. Billings is Distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus, at the University of New Orleans. He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and has a Ph.D. in early American history from Northern Illinois University. Currently, he is Visiting Professor of Law at the William and Mary Law School. Billings is the author or editor of numerous titles, including A Little Parliament: The General Assembly of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century, A Law Unto Itself?: Essays in the New Louisiana Legal History, The Papers of Sir William Berkeley, and Sir William Berkeley and the Forging of Colonial Virginia, which received the Virginia Historical Society's Richard Slatten award for excellence in Virginia biography. "Few scholars match Warren Billings for the depth and integrity of their research, or the elegance of their prose. These essays, the fruits of four decades of immersion in technically difficult archives and spanning four centuries of Virginia and Louisiana history, gracefully connect often arcane legal processes to the larger cultures in which they were situated. Even scholars well conversant with his work will benefit from having this selection of Billings' essays gathered in a single place. The lead essay, a charming and deeply humane scholarly autobiography, adds a grace-note to a volume rich in erudition and learning. Scholars of southern history especially will find much to savor in this supe.
