Description
Nuremberg: Paulus Fürsten, 1673. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. (Frontispiece dated 1661). Folio [33 x 21.5 cm], (6) ff., 44 pp., 154 numbered engraved plates. Bound in original blindstamped vellum over wooden boards, raised bands on spine, with title written in ink in an old hand, clasps and ties present. Some tiny wormholes in blank margin of engraved title and a few leaves; some minor handsoiling; small and light waterstain in upper margin of title and following leaves; typical toning and light browning seen in this volume, but rather less than usual; a few impressions of plates on the light side, or shaved with no loss to image. Generally a fresh copy with good strikes in a handsome original binding. Scarce second German edition and unusually fine copy, in its original blindstamped binding, of this supra-illustrated machinery book devoted to pumps, presses and milling machinery by the Nuremberg architect and engineer Böckler. The work contains a total of 154 full-page engraved plates, depicting a wide variety of mills, waterwheels, and grinding machines, including designs for water-driven perpetual-motion machines. The work is also unusual among Baroque machine books for primarily containing devices that had actually been realized-not simply the fantasies of inventors who could find a willing engraver.Machines described and pictured include paper mills; gunpowder mills; a fulling mill; a smithy with water-powered bellows; pipe boring mills; grinding apparatus for sharpening tools, knives and weapons; and windmills. The majority are grist mills and water-raising devices powered by water, animals, and humans, though other noteworthy examples include a roasting spit, a fire-engine, a pumping system for an outdoor fountain, a man-powered mill which is also a sort of circular stair-stepper, and a famous attempt at designing a perpetual motion machine. Many of the engravings are familiar because they were plagiarized in technology publications for the next hundred years. The work was first published in German in 1661, with a Latin translation following the next year. Several reprints of both followed, always with the same plates. Like most German books of the period, Böckler's books tend to brown, and this is one of the cleanest and freshest copies of his books we have ever encountered. * Graesse I.459; Hoover 142 (Latin); Singer, History of Technology III.16-17.

Description
[Antarctica, 1968. Very good.. [65]pp. report typed on rectos only, plus [28] leaves, illustrated with eighty-six black-and-white mounted photographs, each approximately 5 x 7 inches, most accompanied by typed paper caption strips, plus three loose photographs. Quarto. Original pressboard wrappers with metal spine fastener, with printed title leaf pasted to front board. Minor wear to binding, photos in generally nice condition. A typed report accompanied by detailed photographs documenting the 1967-1968 projects carried out by U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Unit 201 in Antarctica dubbed "Deep Freeze '68." The projects involved the upgrading and expansion of facilities at McMurdo Station and Palmer Station including water, sewer, and energy infrastructure improvements and laboratory and living-quarters construction. The original photographs here provide more than eighty-five detailed and well-captioned views of Antarctic construction, architecture, and engineering involved in the execution of “Deep Freeze ‘68,” with sixty-five pages of typed reports providing a dense written summary in support of the project. Battalion Unit 201 had been newly established in 1967 as a Seabee unit specializing solely in Antarctic construction to continue supporting the series of "Operation Deep Freeze" missions first headed by Admiral Richard E. Byrd in the 1950s to establish a permanent research infrastructure on the then-largely unexplored Antarctic continent. Plagued by material shortages and the savage regional climate, Unit 201 was disbanded at the end of “Deep Freeze ‘71” as the brief building season made the continuation of a dedicated Antarctic construction unit unfeasible.

Description
Paris: Galerie Lutetia, 1932. First edition. Softcover. vg. Quarto. Original pochoir-illustrated paper portfolio containing four loose leaves, as issued. Delightful series of four colorful hand-colored pochoirs by Carlos Bady titled "La Journée de Mado" (Mado’s Day), and published in Paris circa 1932 by Galerie Lutetia. The series comprises the following pochoir plates illustrating four scenes in the life of Mado, a beautiful young Parisian woman: - Mado Babille (Mado is chatting over the phone - with one cherub listening to the conversation, and another one watching the scene) - Mado se maquille (Mado is putting make-up on - with the assistance of the same two cherubs) - Mado s'habille (Mado gets dressed - also with the assistance of the same cherubs!) - Mado se déshabille (Mado gets undressed by two different cherubs) The colors are among the most vibrant ever produced. Along with Raoul Dufy and Paul Allier, Carlos Bady was among the last artists to produce this style of beautiful pochoir prints. Approximate size of each plate: Paper 9 1/2 x 7". Image 8 x 6" . Minor and sporadic creasing and age-toning along edges of portfolio. Title and captions in French. Portfolio in overall good+ to very good, pochoir plates in near fine to fine condition.

Description
England: N.p., 1860. Very good. Toned with spotting, offsetting, and letter folds.. A "Blacksmith"-themed Vinegar Valentine, showing a rough-around-the edges blacksmith mid-swing as he pounds what looks like a horseshoe on an anvil. The text below reads: "Mr. Hammer and Tongs, pray go it, sonorous, To that sweet useful tune of the famed 'Anvil Chorus;' Like Vulcan of old, who the thunderbolts made, Your face and complexion denote your dark trade. Although a great blower, and striking's your lot, Be sure that you strike while the iron is hot." A charming piece of ephemera with lots of personality, and refreshingly tame compared to other Vinegar Valentines we have seen. Measures approx. 9.5" by 7.5" Vinegar Valentines (sometimes called Penny Dreadfuls, not to be confused with the identically named cheap serial literature of the same period) were most popular in the Victorian era, and were usually sent anonymously and with a bit of a mean-spiritedness to someone you were not fond of.
