Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1984. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Graves, Michael. 10 by 6-1/2 inches, 182 pages. The text is composed in Monotype Goudy Light with Piehler capitals and figures for display. The paper is French mouldmade Rives buff. Photo-engravings printed in terra-cotta, titling and chapter numbers in blue-green. The binding has a blue-green cloth spine and corners, with printed grey paper over boards, in slipcase with cloth edges and paper sides. Signed by the artist. Special edition of 50 copies (total edition 400). Diana Ketcham, who was the book review editor and architecture critic for the "Oakland Tribune", had read that the favorite book of the well-known architect Michael Graves was "The Great Gatsby" and that he reread the novel every year. Hoyem and Ketcham visited Graves at his office in Princeton, New Jersey....and Graves liked the idea of making drawings for Gatsby. Hoyem told Graves to imagine himself as Gatsby's architect and draw the buildings and grounds, the furniture and fixtures, the landscaping, automobiles, and cocktail glasses of East and West Egg and New York City, and the gas station and pool where characters meet their ends, but none of the characters themselves, who are left to the reader's imagination. This one of the fifty copies of the special edition, with the book housed in a green cloth box with a recessed lid displaying a cast sculptural relief by Graves of Gatsby's estate, in a terra cotta-like material (note that this copy does not have one of the original drawings). Prospectus loosely laid in. ___CONDITION: The book, prospectus, and box are all new, made available by the publisher. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Antwerp: Johannes Meursius, 1636. FIRST EDITION. 532 x 380 mm. (21 x 15"). 4 p.l., 68, [4] pp. Original stiff vellum, covers with the arms of the city of Ghent in gilt at center, flat spine with seven gilt fleurs-de-lys. Engraved vignette on title by Cornelis Galle after Peter Paul Rubens and 40 (of 42) FINE ENGRAVED PLATES, two of these folding, by Galle, Pieter de Jode, J. Neefs, and others. Lacking plates 23 ("Charles and Africa") and 32 ("Venus beseeching Mars"). Front pastedown with bookplate of J. D. van Langenhove. Landwehr, "Splendid Ceremonies" 96; Lipperheide 2663; Vinet 626; Brunet I, 728. ◆Binding rather soiled and splayed, a few small chips in the vellum, title page a bit stained around the edges and with lower margin strengthened on verso, tears in five plates (four of these neatly mended, the other less so), margins with minor stains, smudges, and thumbing; not without some condition issues, but still a pleasing book internally, the work done on very strong paper, the attractive plates richly impressed, and with deep impressions of the type. Praised by Brunet for its "beautiful plates," this fête book commemorates the "Joyous Entry" into Ghent of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand (1609-41), recently named governor of the Spanish Netherlands (an area incorporating most of modern Belgium and Luxembourg, plus parts of northern France, the southern Netherlands, and western Germany). The son of the King of Spain and his queen, who was the sister of the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand was made a cardinal at the age of 10(!). Despite the ecclesiastical office, he was never ordained to the priesthood; he was more of a soldier at heart. As the Thirty Years War was then in progress, Ferdinand undertook the journey to his new posting accompanied by an army, and his troops engaged in several battles, most notably a victory over the Swedes at Nördlingen. This triumph was celebrated in the pageantry of his entry into Ghent, and in the plates here. There is a large folding plate of the Battle of Nördlingen, as well as plates showing Ferdinand leading his men and consulting with his ally in the battle, the King of Hungary. The decorations for the Joyous Entry were overseen by Peter Paul Rubens, court painter to Ferdinand's predecessor as ruler of the Spanish Netherlands, the Archduchess Isabella. Rubens (1577-1640) also produced the portraits here of Ferdinand and his father, Philip IV of Spain. The triumphal arches and other festive trimmings for Ferdinand's arrival procession are depicted in these plates, along with various allegorical scenes of classical subjects, from gods to real-life conquerors. The revelries accompanying Ferdinand's arrival, including fireworks and theatrical presentations, are also pictured..

Description
London: Printed for T. Cadell, 1830, 1834. First Illustrated Editions. 202 x 135 mm. (8 x 5 1/2"). Two separately published works bound in two volumes (but often found as companion volumes).. VERY PRETTY SKY-BLUE MOROCCO, GILT, BY W. ROOT & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-ins), covers with gilt rule frame bedecked with a profusion of flowers, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with large floral spray centerpiece, gilt titling, turn-ins decorated with gilt rules and floral garland, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The two volumes with a total of four plates, 20 illustrations in the text, and more than 100 fine steel-engraved headpieces and tailpieces, after designs mostly by J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Stothard. Ray 13, 15. Spines slightly and uniformly darkened to a blue-green, but AN EXTREMELY PRETTY SET IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the immaculate text with virtually no signs of use, and the glittering bindings unworn. In flamboyant decorative morocco and containing illustrations of considerable interest, this is an extremely appealing set of two poetic works that added greatly to the contemporaneous popularity of the author and artists involved. The scion of a wealthy banking family, Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) first achieved fame with the publication in 1792 of "The Pleasures of Memory." After Italian travels, during which he met Shelley and Byron in Pisa, Rogers produced a first version of "Italy" in 1822 and issued a sequel in 1826, both of which sold poorly. He destroyed the unsold copies, revised the poems, and published them at his own expense in the present edition of 1830 (our first volume), embellished this time by illustrations. These were the work of two artists born in the same year but with very different propensities--Stothard (1755-1834), who did demure figure scenes, and Turner (1775-1851), who provided landscape vignettes. The success of this edition was perhaps due as much to the artists as to the poet. The London bindery of William Root & Son consistently turned out excellent work, both on fine bindings like the present set and on trade bindings of multi-volume works. Packer lists the firm in business in Red Lion Square in 1899-1901, and the December 1942 issue of "The Rotarian" notes with regret that Root had been bombed out of their premises on Paternoster Row during the 1941 Blitz..

Description
London: Chapman and Hall, 1904. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A near fine copy in like rare dust jacket. Octavo. (7 5/16 x 4 13/16 inches; 185 x 122 mm). [12], 242, [2] pp. Eight half-tone plates by Rackham. Publisher's orange-red cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in black on front cover and spine. Minimal rubbing to extremities, light marginal foxing throughout. Complete with the very scarce publisher's light gray pictorial dust jacket. "There is nothing serious about the stories of Mr. Pagett, ex-private of Marines, and some of them are very amusing....People who like comic sketches dealing with both "Services" (Private Pagett was "soldier and sailor too"), and who are not wearied by the account of the hero's perpetual drunkenness, will be amused by this short collection of stories of land and sea" (The Spectator Archive). Lieutenant-Colonel William Price Drury CBE (1861-1949) was a British Royal Marine Light Infantry officer as well as a novelist, playwright, and politician. Most of literacy output deals with naval themes, and his play The Flag Lieutenant (1908) was adapted for film, not once, but three times. He is also credited with the phrase "Tell it to the Marines" despite his apocryphal claim that it was said by King Charles II. Rackham's humorous stye is a perfect fit Drury's short stories. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Riall, p. 61; Latimore and Haskell p. 23. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Co, 1936. Publisher's salesperson's sample copy (preceding the first edition). Large octavo (9 13/16 x 7 7/16 inches; 249 x 189 mm.). Complete. Original printed color pictorial dust jacket (with "Harrap" on the spine) with a neatly repaired tear on front near spine. Original gilt decorated brown cloth. Original pictorial endpapers. Title-page printed in green and black. Two full-page color plates with descriptive tissue guards and two half-page black and white illustrations. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket. A great rarity. These were obviously produced in minimal quantity for the publisher's salespeople to solicit advance orders from bookshops. The 'list' of illustrations leaf states "[There will be Twelve Plates in Colour]" The vignettes on the half-title and title-page in the published edition are printed in a much lighter and brighter green. The list of books Illustrated by Arthur Rackham on the verso of the half-title is very different from the published edition. The two color plates are: "Peer and the Woman in Green" [in the published edition this plate faces p. 66 and is titled "Peer follows the Woman in Green"] and "Anitra's Dance" [in the published edition this plate faces page 148]. Although this sample has the Lippincott imprint, the verso of the title-page says "Printed in Great Britain." Although inspired by the folk legend and by Peter Christen Asbjornsen's fairy tales, the playwright Henrik Ibsen believed some of the story to be based on true events. He also based some of the characters on his own family members, including his parents, thus imbuing them with a sense of an authenticity. Ibsen, who was interested in promoting Norwegian culture, first wrote Peer Gynt in verse while traveling in Italy. Although he did not originally intend it to be a theatrical production, it has gone on to be an essential part of his oeuvre (Encyclopedia). First published in 1867, this deluxe edition of Ibsen's five-act play is a perfect merging of Rackham's illustrate style with Ibsen's folk-adventure narrative. "In the troll scenes, or in Peer's moorland encounter with the threadballs, Rackhamerie abounds...". (Gettings). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. Not mentioned by Riall.

Description
[n.p.], 1830. Comprised of 7 pages in ink in a single hand, containing six works of poetry. Dark blue printed wraps over lined paper, measuring 7x 6 inches. Ownership signature of Mrs. Russell to header of front wrap. Scattered foxing and some dampstaining not affecting text. Text block loose but holding. In all, an intriguing glimpse into a woman's use of literature to express her own preoccupations with humans' place between nature and the divine. The six poems contained in this slim volume appear to have been thoughtfully selected and carefully copied out. Indeed, among them exist several thematic threads that teach us about the elusive Mrs. Russell, who leaves no identifying information except her ownership signature. The first poem, The Silent Expression of Nature, first appeared in the religious collection Musae Biblicae (1819) before being reprinted in Pierpont's National Reader of 1829, which was designed to provide teachers with reading exercises in class and copy exercises out of class. From its opening line, it places the narrator and reader at the center of the earth and heavens, emphasizing how nature moves before "my wondering eyes," "fills my heart," and "around me falls." Not copied in full, the opening selection of the poem emphasizes the senses in these lines, and encourages the individual to experience the cosmos. The second work, titled simply Hymn, is drawn from John Bowring's 1823 Matins and Vespers, critiqued the same year by the Monthly Review which praised its "sentiments as pure and excellent, and the language is elegant and often poetical," though the editors note "we could have wished for the occasional display of a higher spirit" (Griffiths). The poem in question is pulled out as an example of a more simplistic, childlike poem of wonder. Indeed, it shows the narrator turning to the reliable comfort of sunrise and sunset to push away existential doubts. Notably, Blue Stocking Anna Laetitia Barbauld's poem Tomorrow (1773) is included within the selection. While Baurbauld had herself written a poem in praise of Bowring, this particular piece undercuts the sentiments of his, warning the reader not to trust nature because while the sun rises and sets, no individual lives to see the process without end. Across the selections, one experiences a push and pull of humanity between nature and the divine. One also sees the carefully formed letters created by Mrs. Russell, and the care she has placed into copying out these specific pieces. With research possibilities including but not limited to paleography, gender studies, poetic publication and transmission, the role of Blue Stocking writers within the poetic community, and the use of literature to explore science and theology.

Description
(New York, 1879. Hardcover. Fair. Autograph Album (5¼" x 7½"). Contains over 40 pages of manuscript entries, including several by prominent musicians illustrated with staffs of music, and one illustrated with a pen & ink drawing by Peter Baumgras. Contemporary dark blue morocco over boards, decorative lettering stamped in gold on the front and back covers, with the same decorative lettering embossed in gold on the title page above the J.C. Riker imprint. Lacking the leather spine back, boards are rubbed and worn at the edges and corners, text block is partially split and shaken, else internally very good. A remarkable autograph album dating from the early years of the Academy of Music, a New York City opera house located in downtown Manhattan. Since its opening in October, 1854, the Academy engaged the celebrated Max Maretzek Italian Opera Company to perform an annual season at the hall (up through 1878). As noted in an 1897 obituary laid into the album: "Maretzek was the means of bringing many of the famous singers of his time to this country ..." Other opera companies active at the Academy at this time include the Havana Italian Opera Troupe, and the Max Strakosch Italian Opera Company (which began performing in 1860 and merged with Maretzek's company in 1868). Frederick Henssler was appointed the Academy's Choral Director in 1856. Most of the entries in his autograph album date from 1856-59, when Henssler was serving as choral director in New York City and residing off season in Syracuse, and from when he was on tour with Academy musicians, including a five-month tour in Cuba (1858-59). There are a few additional entries dating up through 1861, and two later entries from 1879. Among the autograph entries of musicians, including some in Spanish from colleagues in Cuba, most are illustrated with music, including an attractive entry from May, 1859 by the Prussian-born conductor and composer Carl Anschuetz [Karl Anschütz]. Soon after his arrival to the United States in 1857 (with Bernard Ullman's Italian opera troupe), he became an important and beloved figure in the New York music scene: in 1862 he founded the German opera in New York, and was active in the establishment of the New York Conservatory of Music. Included among Henssler's other friends is an 1857 entry from Syracuse illustrated with a beautifully rendered pen & ink drawing by the Austrian-born American artist Peter Baumgras. Baumgras is best known today for his portrait of Abraham Lincoln (now at Brown University), and is regarded by art historian William Gerdts as "Washington's finest master of still life". A compelling album worthy of further research, containing autograph entries by many leading international and New York based musicians associated with Manhattan's Academy of Music in the 1850s.

New York: New American Library, 1984. First edition. Fine in a fine jacket.. Beautiful first printing of this Stephen King novel written under pseudonym, a tale of unyielding retribution visited upon those who mostly deserve it. THINNER was the fifth book published by Stephen King under the name Richard Bachman, and the final one to appear before his alternate identity became widely known. In spite of his dedication to maintaining the persona, "It was the beginning of the end of Richard Bachman's career. 'Thinner' was too obviously a Stephen King novel." Or, as King recalled, "The Literary Guild took 'Thinner' and I heard a comment from one of their readers that: 'This is what Stephen King would write like if Stephen King could really write'" (Brown). 8.5'' x 5.5''. Description
Paris: Domino Press, 1931. First edition. Very good plus.. First printing of a pivotal book in Rojankovsky's career, his first in English, and the first book published by the Domino Press, founded in Paris by American expats Esther Averill and Lila Stanley. Averill initially met Rojankovsky for a different design project, but when that fell through Rojankovsky suggested a children's book collaboration. Inspired in part by Rojankovsky's childhood love of James Fenimoore Cooper books, DANIEL BOONE was meant to be a lavish vision of the American West - but for that reason, American publishers considered it too expensive to print. Averill's response was to found the Domino Press in order to make the book a reality. Published in both French and English, this copy is the English issue. Description
[N.p., mid-19th century]. Broadside, 13 x 5.5 inches, on light pink silk, with text printed within elaborate ornamental border. Minor foxing and staining, some soft creases, light occasional fading to text. Very good overall. An attractive display piece printing the first prayer recited in the Continental Congress, delivered by Rev. Jacob Duche on September 7, 1774. Reverend Duhe delivered a powerful, extemporaneous opening prayer following reports of a British attack on Boston. The prayer asked for divine protection for the American colonies in the "righteousness of their cause," "wisdom in council and valor in the field," a quick peace, and so forth. A brief note at the top of the broadside provides some cotext: "In Thatcher's Military Journal, under date of December, 1777, is found a note containing the identical 'first prayer in Congress,' made by the Rev. Jacob Duche, a gentleman of great eloquence. Here it is - an historical curiosity.

Description
Wien: Universal-Edition [PN U.E. 10903], 1938. Small folio. Original publisher's light green wrappers printed in dark green. 55 pp. + Violin: 15 pp. Publisher's catalogue "Werke von Alban Berg" dated "XI. 1938" to verso of lower wrapper. Wrappers partially detached. Slightly worn; upper outer corner dampstained throughout; occasional creases and small tears. First Edition, first issue of this arrangement. According to Universal Edition, there was no earlier issue. Only the full score was published in 1936. The arrangement, not credited in the edition, is by the Austrian pianist Rita Kurzmann (née Pollak, 1900-1942). She premiered it with violinist Louis Krasner (1903-1995), who had commissioned the concerto. Kurzmann was engaged in the workers' music movement and emigrated to Argentina in 1936. The double dedication-to Krasner and the "memory of an angel"-is noteworthy. The "angel" is Manon Gropius (1916-1935), daughter of Alma Mahler-Gropius (1879-1964) and Walter Gropius (1883-1969), whose early death from poliomyelitis shocked Vienna.

New York: Penguin Books, 2004. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5x1x8. Reprint. Edge wear, spine creased. 2004 Trade Paperback. 486 pp. Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julian Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax's books in existence. Soon Daniel's seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona's darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.
