Description
London: J. & A. Churchill, 1934. First edition. NOBELIST FLEMING ON VACCINE AND SERUM THERAPY ONE YEAR BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF SULPHONAMIDES. 8 1/4 inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, gilt title to spine, bound-in ribbon bookmark with "Valuable Books" sold by publisher, i-x, 463 pp, 16 pp publisher's advertisements dated June, 1933. Embossed library stamp to front and back covers, small "withdrawn" handstamp to front paste-down, small library handstamp to bottom title page, bookplate of City of Liverpool Reference Library to back paste-down, dated 20:2:1934, Despite library marks, book appears unread with light browning to pages. A tightly bound copy in custom archival mylar cover. PREFACE: "Our purpose in writing this book has been to survey the present state of knowledge regarding the employment of vaccines and sera in the prevention and treatment of disease. Care has been taken to refer to the methods of their preparation in order that the clinical worker may obtain some idea of the processes of manipulation and control through which they pass before they are released for issue. We hope, too, that the specialist whose work is concerned with the technique of their production will find interest in learning something of the successes and the failures that have attended their use." THE SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES OF ALEXANDER FLEMING, OTHER THAN THE DISCOVERY OF PENICILLIN, Medical History, 1983, 27: 347-372: "Another of Fleming's activities was the co-authorship with G. F. Petrie of a book, Recent advances in vaccine and serum therapy (1934). It was divided equally between the two authors, Petrie, who occupied much the same position in the Lister Institute as did Fleming at St Mary's, dealing with serum therapy, while Fleming limited himself to vaccine therapy and prophylaxis. Following chapters on technical details, Fleming discussed all the vaccines employed at that time except those that required living organisms (such as smallpox and BCG), but including those made from pollen extract and the toxoids employed for the prevention of diphtheria and tetanus. He gave detailed descriptions of each vaccine, whether therapeutic or prophylactic, its composition, the method of preparation, the type of infection dealt with, and the probable results of its employment. He must have spent a great deal of time over this book, for his contribution (about 66,000 words and nearly 400 references to the work of other authors) gives a complete account of the practice of vaccine therapy and prophylaxis only one year preceding the revolution in treatment ushered in by the sulphonamides in 1935. All in all, it is by far the best of Fleming's literary contributions to science." ALEXANDER FLEMING (1881 - 1955) was a Scottish physician and microbiologist, best known for discovering the world's first broadly effective antibiotic substance, which he named penicillin. His discovery in 1928 of what was later named benzylpenicillin (or penicillin G) from the mould Penicillium rubens has been described as the "single greatest victory ever achieved over disease".[3][4] For this discovery, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain. GEORGE FORD PETRIE (1870 - 1959) was raised in Scotland, and joined the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in Chelsea in 1901. In 1905 he was appointed to the Plague Commission in India, and in 1911 published proceedings of plague in North China. This was followed by work in plague in upper Egypt.

Description
Paris: Chez la Veuve Savoye, 1775 Nouvelle edition. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt. Lightly browned, occasional faint spotting, otherwise a very good, tight copy. 12mo., xlviii, 430 pages. Although Arnauld and Nicole were strongly Cartesian in their emphasis on method rather than the theory of pure logic, their work forged a revolution in the study of logic, leaving behind both inadequate scholastic and outmoded Ramesian approaches. The most famous logic text of the seventeenth century, known as the Port-Royal Logic, it set the form of manuals of logic for the next two hundred years and every edition is distinct as changes and additions were incorporated constantly. Not in Brunet.
