Description
London: J. Nichols, Son, and Bentley, 1814. First edition. Original publisher's boards, paper title label to spine, quarto. 24 uncolored aquatint plates by Clark after the author's own sketches (usually colored), many leaves uncut, bookplate of St. Augustine College to front pastedown and verso of title, early ink ownership of one C. J. Elliot to front pastedown. Joints cracked with sewing visible (however holding firm), a few gatherings a little roughly opened, occasional offsetting and foxing (heavier to a few leaves). A Very Good + copy, rare in original, unrestored boards. Wathen, a retired glover from Hereford, sailed to India and China in 1811 with Captain James Pendergrass who he had known since his schooldays. The plates include seven views of India, six of Indonesia, nine of China, and two of St. Helena. The work provided important accounts of Madras and its environs, of Pulo-penang, Macao and Canton. In addition to this, there is an interesting pre-Napoleon account of St. Helena and further material on the Cape of Good Hope. Abbey (Travel), 517. Cordier, Sinica 2107. Mendelssohn II, p591.

New York: Harcourt Brace & Co., 1940. Book. Illus. by Hertha List. Near Fine. Cloth. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY TRANSLATOR. First Edition. New York: Harcourt Brace & Co., 1940. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY TRANSLATOR on 2nd front endpage -"to Will Hays with best regards Paul Leyssac April, 1941". Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. Paul Leyssac was a well-known stage actor who appeared opposite Ethel Barrymore and Marie Tempest and whose recitals of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf were widely popular. Danish-born and French-accented, he was also an accomplished translator of Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen. He also appeared in 7 films of the late 1930's and early 40's. Berlin: Menorah" - Verlag, 1948. Hardcover. g. 8vo. 205 pp. Decorative cloth boards in lovely original, colored ornamental dj. Minor age wear to dj and boards. Hinges starting. Pp. 35-62 and 195-205 are detached but present. Browning to pages due to age, book is in overall good condition. The author, Scholem Aleichem, (1859 - 1917) was the penname of the popular author of Yiddish literature. He did much to promote Yiddish writers and was the first to ever write children's literature in Yiddish. Often called the “Jewish Mark Twain” due to the two authors' similar styles of writing and their uses of pen names, he was also extremely active in the political scene. He served as an American delegate to the Eighth Zionist Congress held in the Hague and was active in promoting the Zionist cause.
