Description
2 p.l., 192 pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, cont. calf (joints nicely repaired), flat spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. London: Edwards; Paris: Laurent, 1790. A priced copy of the Paris edition of this famous sale; an English edition appeared the next year. For a fascinating account of this catalogue and sale (which caused traffic jams along Pall Mall), see Arthur Rau’s “Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Book Collector (Autumn 1969), pp. 307-17. Amongst the buyers at this sale were Lord Spencer, Douce, Woodhull, Cracherode, and the Duke of Newcastle. Thanks to the recent researches of Milton McC. Gatch (“The Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Library, Seventh Series, Vol. 12, Number 2 (June 2011), pp. 90-118), we finally know the identity of the consignor: Antoine Marie Pâris d’Illins (1746-1809), a military man who was forced to emigrate in 1792 because of conflicts with the Revolution. Rehabilitated by Napoleon, Pâris d’Illins died as a general of the infantry during the Spanish campaigns at Cocana in 1809. See the entire article to learn more about the collector, his library, Edwards’s additions, etc. We know that not all the books came from the one library; there were books from Loménie de Brienne, masquerading under another provenance probably for political reasons, and Aldines which Edwards must have obtained in Italy. Nevertheless, this is one of the great sales of the period. Very good copy. The Paris edition is far rarer than the English edition. Peignot, pp. 116-17. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 92.

Description
Venice: Vincenzio Formaleoni, 1782. . 2 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, spine and label gilt. Some minor foxing, but a very good copy. First edition (another edition was published the same year in Florence) of this history of the Inquisition in Italy, illustrated by plates depicting torture and inquisitor costume. Printed almost immediately after the Inquisition closed, this was a propaganda publication touting the success and necessity of the trials. (Rastrelli, to whom this work is attributed, had published a laudatory Vita of Girolamo Savonarola the previous year.) The text traces the history of clerical condemnation of heresy and witchcraft from 1204, and includes the trials of Galileo, Copernicus, Tommaso Crudeli, and the Jesuit Malagrida, who was condemned to be hanged then burned in 1761, despite being in his 80s. OCLC records 6 copies in the U.S. (Cornell, Emory, Penn, Yale, Brown, Berkeley) See Melzi I: 397.

NP: C. Felber, 1907. First edition. Hardcover. vg. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 3/4"). 98 leaves. Uncut. Original brown morocco with gold lettering on spine. Decorative raised bands. Dentelles. Endpapers with a striking Art Nouveau floral motif. Ribbon marker. Contemporary gift inscription on fly leaf: "A mon cher ami Fernand, en témoignage de bonne amitié. St. Raphaël le 6. 3. 1907. Charles" (To my dear friend Fernand, in memory of a good friendship. St. Raphaël, March 6, 1907. Charles). This striking early 20th-century blank journal contains 98 mounted leaves on vellum, with each leaf featuring a different illustrated vignette on upper margin. Some of the vignettes are signed in the plate by A. Mangonot, Paul Avril, G. Alaux, Mengin, Edme Couty, P. Kauffmann, Gustave Fraipont, H. Danger, Régereau, A. de Richemont, Petiau, Camille Lefèvre, E. Matthis, and others. A tiny scratch on spine, and three minor scratches at upper edge of front board. Very minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Description
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1920. Money," he said, "is a terrible nuisance. But it's nice not to have to worry." First Edition of Doctor Dolittle LOFTING, Hugh. The Story of Doctor Dolittle. Being the history of his peculiar life at home and astonishing adventures in foreign Parts. Never before printed. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1920. First edition of the First Doctor Dolittle Book. Octavo (8 x 5 1/4 inches; 203 x 134 mm.). [xii], 180 pp. Inserted color frontispiece with original tissue-guard, three inserted black and white plates, and numerous line illustrations, many full-page, all by Hugh Lofting. Publisher's orange cloth, front cover decorated and lettered in blue and with a duplicate of the color frontispiece laid on. Spine lettered in blue, three-color pictorial end-papers. Small library stamp on half title, some staining to a few pages, most significantly on pp. 29-37, small blank corner (1 x 1 inch) torn away from dedication leaf, inner hinges repaired, spine darkened. A fair copy of the first edition at a reasonable price. Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 - 26 September 1947) was a British author, trained as a civil engineer, who created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children's literature. He traveled widely as a civil engineer, before enlisting in the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army to serve in the First World War. Not wishing to write to his children about the brutality of the war, he wrote imaginative letters which later became the foundation of the successful Doctor Dolittle novels for children. Hugh Lofting's character of Doctor John Dolittle, was an English physician from Puddleby-on-the-Marsh in the West Country - who could speak to animals. The character first saw light in the author's illustrated letters to children, written from the trenches during the War of 1914 to 1918, when actual news, he later said, was either too horrible or too dull. The stories are set in early Victorian England in the 1820s-1840s (The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle gives a date of 1839). The Story of Doctor Dolittle: Being the History of His Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts Never Before Printed (1920) began the series and won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958. The sequel The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922) won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal. Eight more books followed, and after Lofting's death two more volumes appeared, composed of short unpublished pieces. The internal chronology of the books is somewhat different from the publishing order. The first book is followed by Doctor Dolittle's Post Office (1923), Doctor Dolittle's Circus (1924) and Doctor Dolittle's Caravan (1926). Only then follows the second book, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), continued by Doctor Dolittle's Zoo (1925). After that, the publishing order is restored; Doctor Dolittle's Garden (1927) is followed by Doctor Dolittle in the Moon (1928) and Doctor Dolittle's Return (1933), ending with Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake (1948). The series has been adapted for film and television many times, for stage twice, and for radio too. Our great friend of nearly fifty years, Leslie Bricusse wrote the song "Talk to the Animals" for which he won the Oscar for 'Best original Song' at the 1968 academy awards. "If we could talk to the animals, learn all their languages, Maybe take an animal degree, We'd study elephant and eagle, buffalo and beagle, Alligator, guinea pig, and flea!" Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 138.
