Description
Boston: Printed by Isaac Knapp, 1838. First edition. Very Good. Octavo (177 x 107 mm). Contemporary blue boards, neatly rebacked to style in beige buckram, original yellow printed paper label on front cover. Binding a little soiled but presenting smartly, recased, corners and inner hinges expertly repaired, contents crisp and clean: a very good copy. An activist for universal human rights, Angelina Grimké was one of the only white Southern women to fight simultaneously for abolition and women's equality. Having witnessed first hand the savage injustices of racism and sexism in South Carolina, she moved to the North in her adulthood and dedicated her life to advancing equality. Letters to Catherine Beecher became her most famous work, as it arose out of the debate regarding women's place within the abolition movement. In direct response to Beecher's argument that women's naturally subordinate role should prohibit their public activism, Grimké published a text that laid critical groundwork for the intersectional feminism of today. "In the preamble of that instrument [the U.S. Constitution] the great objects for which it was framed are declared to be 'to establish justice, to promote the general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty to us and to our posterity.' The slave laws are violations of these fundamental principles...I have found the Anti Slavery cause to be the high school of morals in our land-the school in which human rights are more fully investigated, and better understood and taught, than in any other....Human beings have rights, because they are moral beings: the rights of all men grow out of their moral nature; and as all men have the same moral nature, they have essentially the same rights. These rights may be wrested from the slave, but they cannot be alienated.... Now if rights are founded in the nature of our moral being, then the mere circumstances of sex does not give to man higher rights and responsibilities, than to women.... To suppose that it does, would be to break up utterly the relations, of the two natures...exalting the animal nature into a monarch, and humbling the moral into a slave." For Grimké and the racially diverse group of Northern abolitionist men and women with whom she worked, the oppression of African Americans and of women were critically linked, and justice could only occur when both groups were recognized as fully human under the law. Sabin 28854. Krichmar 466. Very Good.

London: Alston Rivers, Limited, 1909. Illustrated by C. Harrison. London: Alston Rivers, Limited, 1909. First edition. Small octavo (7 3/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 182 x 123 mm). 126, [1, colophon], [1, blank] pp. With numerous illustrations in the text, many of which are full page. Original white wrappers printed in orange and black. Some restoration to spine and front wrapper has a small repair and touch-up. A bit of dust soiling. Still, a fine copy of this fragile item. Housed in a custom slipcase with a replica of the wrappers affixed to the case. "Clarence Chugwater is not a Boy Scout for nothing. It is summer 1909 and everyone is too interested in the Test Match to notice that England has been invaded by the Germans. And the Russians. And the Chinese. Not to mention a 'boisterous band of the Young Turks', a mad Mullah, and a brace of North African pirates. The government has recently abolished the army so there is nothing to be done about it anyway, except give a masterly display of polite indifference. But this would be to reckon without patriotic Clarence, 'Boy of Destiny', who alone is prepared to stand up to the foe, and who devises a highly unorthodox plan to restore his country to freedom..." (Penguin dot co). "P. G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) is widely regarded as the greatest comic writer of the twentieth century. Wodehouse wrote more than seventy novels and 200 short stories, creating numerous much-loved characters - the inimitable Jeeves and Wooster, Lord Emsworth and his beloved Empress of Blandings, Mr Mulliner, Ukridge, and Psmith. His humorous articles were published in more than eighty magazines, including Punch, over six decades. He was also a highly successful music lyricist, once with over five musicals running on Broadway simultaneously. P.G. Wodehouse was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for 'an outstanding and lasting contribution to the happiness of the world'." (Penguin dot co) Jansen 11. McIlvaine. HBS 68772. $5,500.

Description
Paris: Dunod, 1879. First Edition.. Contemporary three-quarter leather.. Near fine; some chafing to the joints.. 8vo, [4], iii, [1 - blank], [1] - 828 pp. + 7 plates (4 are maps with printed, translucent, glassine overlays) and 3 mounted chromolithographs in the text. This is Daubree's most important work. It is the summary of his research. He was a French geochemist and a pioneer in the application of experimental methods to the study of geological phenomena. In 1838 Daubrée was appointed professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Strasbourg. In 1861 he was appointed professor of geology at the Museum of Natural Sciences, Paris and in 1862 professor at the Imperial School of Mines. He amassed a large collection of meteorites. The book offered here consists of two parts: the first concerns experimental methods used to study various geological phenomena, the second part looks at the application of experimental methods to various cosmological phenomena, which includes investigations on the constitution and characteristics of meteorites. The chapters deal with different topics: geochemical processes, applications of engineering principles to the understanding of geological structures and mechanical problems, e.g., the folding and torsion of land structures. There are very interesting chapters devoted to the effects of dyanamite explosions, mineralization patterns (beautifully illustrated), meteors, etc..
