Description
Cloth. Very Good. Small folio, 33 by 25 cm. 38 pp. of pen and crayon drawings, most of which are both erotic and comical, mounted in "Henschel's Skizzenbuch". The accompanying text, often narrative poems, is written by Wagniez as well. The French-Belgian artist Paul Wagniez (1876 - 1935) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts et des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and became known for book illustration. He was a versatile artist, nonetheless, at home with still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and action scenes such as those of the hunt, and equally proficient in oils, watercolors and other media. Most of the works contained in the album are from the early 1930s, shortly before Wagniez's death, and these were dedicated to a friend, Robert Villefumade, who most surely compiled this album in honor of Wagniez. The overall nature of the content is not readily apparent as one opens the front cover. On that cover there is a funny picture of a squat obese woman surrounded ludicrously with mathematic iconology. Humor aside, this offers no hint of the risqué. Pasted to the FFEP is a moody youthful self-portrait, circa 1900. Following are two additional somber works -- another, more mature Wagniez self-portrait executed in 1928, and a pretty yard scene of a cat, dated 1934. Then the fun begins. The erotica bears some resemblance to Epinal cartoon sheets in the arrangement of vignettes on the page amidst text, in their artistic styling, and in being, essentially, graphic short stories, except unlike Epinals, the content is not meant for juvenile eyes. In one tale, "Chut, chut! Tu vas reveiller Grand-mere . . . " a young woman exhorts her lover to be quiet lest they wake the sleeping elderly woman. Another piece involves a lecherous traveller unexpectedly rebuffed in his advances. Other story lines show a wet nurse who doesn't feel compelled to nap with her ward, the uninhibited dreams of young women, and a Flapper named Fanny who "se chauffe en hiver/A la flamme elle expose son derriere . . . " This being the land of saucy louche-ness, one can find tingly hints of sapphic love and other taboos defied. Not all the action is harmlessly consensual by any means -- there is a fair amount of violation and rape. The stories are set in the past, with particular relish for the period spanning from Henri IV to Louis XIII, but scenes also set in mythology, the Middle Ages and the eighteenth century. A few of the final entries are sketchy, unfinished cartoons, but overall, the work is meticulously detailed and rendered with great fluency. Moderate to heavy wear to the cloth binding, with tears along joints, bunching of the cloth, soiling, etc.

Description
New York: [published by the New York Yankees], 1973 First edition. Signed on inside spread by fourteen New York Yankees, including: Whitey Ford (HOF), Yogi Berra (HOF), Roy White, Bobby Richardson, Tony Kubek, Bob Turley, Mel Stottlemyre, Bill Skowron, Clete Boyer, Bobby Murcer, Johnny Blanchard, Ralph Terry, Don Larsen, and Ryne Duren. Original white program, with side-by-side photos of Yankee Stadium in 1923 and 1973 to front wrapper, chart of standout Yankees on inside, and Old Timers' Day schedule to rear wrapper. Very good, with some fold-lines, general creasing, and minor splitting to fold line at foot of spine. This program was for the NY Yankees Old Timers' Days on August 11, 1973, a particularly notable event as it celebrated Yankee Stadium's 50th year. According to the program, "some 65 former and present Yankee Stars have been brought together to salute the glorious history of the New York Yankees on the occasion of the Stadium's 50th anniversary with at least one player representing each of the 50 years between 1923 (when the stadium opened) through 1972." Whitey Ford played all sixteen years of his career with the Yankees (1950, 1953-67), and helped the team win six World Series titles. He was a ten-time All-Star and holds numerous Yankees records, including career wins, shutouts, and games started. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, along with his close friend and teammate, Mickey Mantle. Yogi Berra played eighteen seasons with the New York Yankees, winning an incredible ten World Series titles and three AL MVP awards. Off the field, Berra was known for his wise and humorous "Yogi-isms," some of which include: "It ain't over til it's over," "it's déjà vu all over again," and "the future ain't what it used to be." Recognized as one of the greatest catchers of all-time, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. Other signees include 8x All-Star and 5x Gold Glove winner Bob Richardson, 5x All-Star and 1x Gold Glove award-winner Bobby Murcer, 4x All-Star and 3x World Series champion Tony Kubek, 3x All-Star and 1x Cy Young award-winner Bob Turley, and 2x World Series champion Don Larsen, whose best remembered feat was pitching the only perfect game in MLB postseason history (Game 5 of the 1956 World Series).. Signed. First Edition. Original Wraps. Near Fine.

Description
A small archive of clippings from the Richmond newspaper about various sporting events in which Benedictine High School was engaged in 1945. The clippings are mounted on brown pasteboard and we surmise that the uniform pieces of pasteboard orginated at a local dry-cleaners and that shirts were delivered folded around them! ~The top sheet (which we perhaps arbitrarily made the first sheet) has a home made label on which is penned “Football B.H.S. 1945” and pasted on it is program “Honoring Benedictine High School Football Team” of 1945. ~~There are a few clippings regarding Football, but most appear to be about Basketball. Benedictine played a number of Virginia High Schools -- Thomas Jefferson, Belmont Abbey, St. Christopher’s , Fork Union, and many others. There are also some college clippings, including University of Richmond and University of Virginia.~~The archive was kept by Richmonder Chris Rubis, who has a clipping with photgraph noting that he was “the lightest player in city varsity schoolboy basketball” standing 5’5” and tipping the scales at 115 pounds. Young Rubis also played football and is listed in the 1945 football awards program.~~On the back of one pasteboard are penned a number of arithmetic sums, undoubtedly by Chris Rubis.~~A really charming archive of clippings about Richmond’s Benedictine High School.

Washington: Printed at the Union Office, 1856. 32pp, disbound and loosened. Good+. The debate concerned whether James H. Lane, leader of the Free State forces in Kansas, was a liar. Lane had submitted to Congress a memorial, purportedly by the members of the Kansas General Assembly, requesting Congress to accept the anti-slavery Topeka Constitution. Southerners asked, with obvious contempt, "Who is James H. Lane?" The debate, ostensibly about Lane's honor or lack thereof, became a dispute about the Free or Slave destiny of Kansas. Burlington: Ashgate, 2003. Hardcover. Good/good. Hardcover. 9 1/2" X 6 1/4". viii, 369pp. Mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Bound in black paper over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Slight lean to spine. Occasional inked underlining to pages. Underlining does not obscure text. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: One of the key themes of the Enlightenment was the search for universal laws and truths that would help illuminate the workings of the universe. It is in such attitudes that we trace the origins of modern science and medicine. However, not all eighteenth century scientists and physicians believed that such universal laws could be found, particularly in relation to the differences between living and inanimate matter. From the 1740s physicians working in the University of Medicine of Montpellier began to contest Descartes's dualist concept of the body-machine that was being championed by leading Parisian medical 'mechanists'. In place of the body-machine perspective that sought laws universally valid for all phenomena, the vitalists postulated a distinction being living and other matter, offering a holistic understanding of the physical-moral relation in place of mind-body dualism. Their medicine was not based on mathematics and the unity of the sciences, but on observation of the individual patient and the harmonious activities of the 'body-economy'. Vitalists believed that Illness was a result of disharmony in this 'body-economy' which could only be remedied on an individual level depending on the patient's own 'natural' limitations. The limitations were established by a myriad of factors such as sex, class, age, temperament, region, and race, which negated the use of a single universal treatment for a particular ailment. Ultimately Montpelier medicine was eclipsed by that of Paris, a development linked to the dynamics of the Enlightenment as a movement bent on cultural centralisation, acquiring a reputation as a kind of anti-science of the exotic and the mad. Given the long-standing Paris-centrism of French cultural history, Montpellier vitalism has never been accorded the attention it deserves by historians. This study repairs that neglect.(Publisher).
