Nicely Inscribed by Drury on the front fly, beneath the gift inscription: "To Leonard - with friendship and all the best- Al Drury. April 19, 1960." R. Leonard Miall was a broadcaster and administrator for the BBC for 35 years; Lorna was his first wife. Drury's first book, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and perhaps the quintessential 20th Century political novel. Basis for the 1962 Otto Preminger film with a great cast that included Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Henry Fonda, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton, Peter Lawford, Gene Tierney, and Burgess Meredith.

He gives accounts of his family, his childhood and early vicissitudes, his university days, activities as a soldier and officer, and of his career as a novelist, philosopher, and teacher. He was admired by many for his writings and his beliefs, achieving world renown as a moral and religious teacher. A beautiful copy bound in brown cloth lettered in gilt, spine gilt, sharp corners, in beige dust jacket lettered in black, spine lettering black, page 117 has a tiny closed to outer margin, and unfortunately, it does have an owner's name and date. But still, a lovely copy.

These letters were written on greeting cards and her personal stationery, six with handwritten envelopes, various formats, 1976 to 1979, at a time when she was preparing for her new role as a grandparent while also trying to overcome the loss of her mother, who had introduced her to the world of show business at the age of 12 in Atlantic City. No matter what her circumstances, she still manages to convey her sense of humor and/or appreciation in each letter -- a quality that made her one of the most beloved actresses in Hollywood. A small sampling of this correspondence includes the following passages: December 30, 1976: "Birthdays to Peter & Lynda [her son from her marriage to Glenn Ford]...only three more weeks and I'll be a grandmother -- baby due on Jan. 15th -- I am so thrilled & looking foreword to the big event." June 6, 1977: "I'm feeling somewhat better every day -- but still miss mother so much -- we were so close -- I go to the cemetery every week with flowers -- perhaps time will heal." June 1978: "I may of worn tails...but I'm still a girl -- Ha Ha...I had a terrific day -- 12 flower arrangements -- some from Berlin, England, Scotland & Australia -- I am truly blessed and am so grateful..." June 28, 1979: "Last week took Aubrey to Disneyland and what fun we had. I didn't know who had a better time -- grandma or Aubrey." August 1979: "No, I suppose I wouldn't know Atlantic City anymore -- I have a friend there who keeps me informed of all the changes. I did enjoy the clipping you sent me under construction, etc. -- Wow! All those gambling casinos...Las Vegas better look out...Lynda is pregnant again & due around December 11th or so -- so I%u2019ll be a grandma twice now. So - - - just as I thought I'd be through with 'Pampers'...here I go again in full force. Ha-Ha." Overall this archive is in very good condition. American actress and dancer best remembered for her exuberant solo tap numbers in musical films of the 1930s and 1940s.

Gottlieb, best known as the co-screenwriter (along with author Peter Benchley) for Steven Speilberg's "Jaws" (1975) writes cordially to Francis Ford Coppola's long-time producer Fred Roos, on location in the Philippines working on "Apocalypse Now," regarding the "Coppola Company's" [Zoetrope Studios] sponsorship on Gottlieb's unproduced project "My Country," which Gottlieb notes has been shopped to the major studios without commitment. Gottlieb's letter also notes meeting Teri Garr and Richard Dreyfuss at Steven Speilberg's house "noodling" on the script for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," a week prior to the commencement of shooting in Wyoming and Alabama. An insightful look into the latter third of the New Hollywood Cinema era and the commencement of the "summer blockbuster" era. 7.25 x 10.5 inches.
