Description
21/03/1793. In the musical Hamilton, it is depicted in the song ""Cabinet Meeting Number 2"" Having just learned of Louis XVI's death: ""Secure to our vessels the rights of neutrality, and protect them against all invasions of it"" He asks them to be vigilant to protect American shipping, trade and neutrality and to protect the American flag from being stolen and used against the new nation The text of these instructions was approved by President Washington, including the emphasis on the need to prevent foreign vessels from illegitimately flying the American flag, and granting consuls the authority to inspect and investigate ships suspected of misrepresenting their nationality “On the first imminent symptoms of rupture among the maritime powers...you will be pleased also…to give no countenance to the usurpation of our flag by foreign vessels, but rather indeed to aid in detecting it, as without bringing to us any advantage, the usurpation will tend to commit us with the belligerent powers, and to subject those vessels which are truly ours to harassing scrutinies in order to distinguish them from the counterfeits.” The Consuls were instructed to send all their correspondence to Jefferson directly, an indication of the importance of the instructionsFollowing the French Revolution, other European monarchies became increasingly alarmed and saw France as a threat to their own internal security. France declared war on Austria as a preemptive measure on April 20, 1792, thus initiating a conflict that included the Habsburg Monarchy, which controlled Hungary as well. Prussia, having allied with Austria that February, declared war on France in June 1792. The execution of French King Louis XVI on January 21, 1793, enraged Europe's monarchical powers and led to a rapid expansion of the anti-French alliance. In early February 1793, France declared war on Great Britain and the Dutch Republic. In March, it declared war on its former ally, Spain. Portugal, Naples, and other states also joined the anti-French coalition in that month. All the great powers on the continent of Europe, except for Russia, were then embroiled in war.The French had also dispatched a new minister, Edmond-Charles Genêt, who was already on his way to the U.S. to rally support for France. In March 1793, the U.S. government, Washington and Jefferson learned of the death of Louis XVI. At a cabinet meeting on March 12, Washington first raised the question of neutrality. According to Jefferson’s notes, the president asked his cabinet to consider “whether we should declare our neutrality, or await events.” This was not yet a formal decision, but it put neutrality on the table as the policy to be discussed. Jefferson wanted neutrality observed in practice but without a public proclamation; Hamilton pushed for a formal, public statement.A second meeting took place. On March 22. Jefferson records in his ""Anas"": “Mar. 22. The President called a meeting of the heads of departments, in which he proposed for consideration, 1. Whether a proclamation should issue to prevent our citizens from taking part in any hostilities on the seas, with or against any of the belligerent powers. 2. Whether we should receive the minister from the Republic of France. 3. Whether we should not issue a proclamation for the purpose of preventing interferences by our citizens in the war.” The very next day, Hamilton would begin working on his formal draft of the neutrality proclamation. But on March 22, Washington convened his secretaries to ask three urgent questions:1) Should a proclamation issue, warning U.S. citizens not to take part in the war?2) Should the United States receive Genêt, the new minister from the French Republic?3) How should the U.S. handle its 1778 alliance with France given the changed circumstances?By doing this, Washington was making sure the executive branch had a united policy before Genêt arrived and before American private adventurers took matters into their own hands.Perhaps at this meeting, Jefferson brought Washington the draft of a text, this very letter, and Washington approved its warnings on neutrality and the American flag.Tensions in Europe were at a boiling point, but had not yet received news of the actual expansion of the wars, though it knew it was imminent. When the war news arrived in April, it intensified the rivalry between Alexander Hamilton's pro-British Federalists and Thomas Jefferson's pro-French Democratic-Republicans. To avoid being drawn into a European war, President George Washington issued his Proclamation of Neutrality on April 22, 1793. The proclamation formally declared the U.S. impartial in the conflict and warned citizens against aiding either side.Robert Fox was a Quaker shipping agent in Falmouth, England, and father of the noted English scientist of the same name. Fox senior was nominated and confirmed as the United States Consul at that port under the mistaken name of Edward Fox in February 1793. He was sent his consular instructions by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson in March, still under the name Edward Fox. He responded to Jefferson pointing out the mistake in name, and saying that Robert Morris, who recommended either him or his brother to serve as American consul, had informed them that the appointment was made, and there is no Edward Fox in Falmouth—and asking for another appointment in his own name. In the meantime he would act as consul if the U.S. minister in London did not object (which he did not). Fox also told Jefferson he would abide to the best of his ability by his directions, would sign the required bond, and informed him that since the outbreak of war between Britain and France, a great number of American ships had arrived in Falmouth and been permitted to leave with their cargoes to wherever their proprietors choose, though lately none has been ordered to France, but many to Spain. He hoped soon to receive his new appointment and would immediately inform the U.S. minister in London of anything important. Fox functioned as acting U.S. consul until he was renominated and reconfirmed under his own name in May 1794 and served with distinction until his death in 1818.Important circular letter signed by Thomas Jefferson to U.S. Consuls, to reinforce American neutrality amid the escalating war in Europe, the content of which was approved by President Washington according to the National Archives, two pages, Philadelphia, March 21, 1793, addressed to Consul Robert W. Fox (under the mistaken name of Edward Fox), containing the U.S. government’s instructions to its consuls on the war and the responsibilities they would have in protecting American interests, trade, and neutrality. Jefferson emphasizes the need to prevent foreign vessels from illegitimately flying the American flag, and grants consuls the authority to inspect and investigate ships suspected of misrepresenting their nationality. Additionally, Jefferson mandates that consuls provide a bond with two or more guarantors to ensure their actions aligned with U.S. interests and its commitment to neutrality.“Present appearances in Europe rendering a general war there probable, I am to desire your particular attention to all the indications of it, and on the first imminent symptoms of rupture among the maritime powers, to put our vessels on their guard. In the same event the patronage of our Consuls will be particularly requisite to secure to our vessels the rights of neutrality, and protect them against all invasions of it. You will be pleased also in the same case to give no countenance to the usurpation of our flag by foreign vessels, but rather indeed to aid in detecting it, as without bringing to us any advantage, the usurpation will tend to commit us with the belligerent powers, and to subject those vessels which are truly ours to harassing scrutinies in order to distinguish them from the counterfeits.“The law requiring the consuls of the United States to give bond with two or more good sureties for the faithful performance of their duties, I enclose you a blank bond for that purpose. According to a standing regulation which places our Consuls in Europe in relation with the Minister of the United States in the same country with them, if there be one, and if none, then with their Minister in Paris, and our Consuls in America in immediate relation with the Secretary of State, you will be pleased to have your sureties approved by the person to whom you stand thus referred, and to send the bond when executed, by a safe conveyance, to the Secretary of State, to be disposed of according to law; and this with all the expedition the case will admit: provided this should not have been done before.“A copy of the laws of the last Session of Congress will be sent to Mr. Pinckney, Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States in London to be forwarded to you. You will be pleased to address your letters always to 'The Secretary of State for the United States of America at Philadelphia, without adding the name, in order to prevent the casualties to them which changes in the office might otherwise occasion…” Thomas Pinckney was the U.S. minister to Great Britain from 1792 to 1794. We can find no other example of this letter having reached the market previously. This was a crucial letter in every way, replete with instructions to the Consuls to take actions to protect American interests. And there was real cause for concern that justified the letter. Both the French and British violated U.S. neutrality, leading in time to the Phony War with France in 1798 and the War of 1812 with Britain. We found no evidence that another copy of this important letter has come up for sale.

31/12/1783. The letter dealt with ratification of the Treaty of Paris, and the Republican uprising in the Netherlands, affirming their right to bear armsCongressional assent was required for the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution to take effect, and delegates were called to convene at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, then serving as the nation's capital, in November 1783. The Treaty stipulated that Congress approve and return the document to Great Britain within six months of being signed. However, according to the Articles of Confederation, under which the American government was then operating, representatives from nine of the thirteen states were required to be present in order for Congress to proceed. Due to the severe winter of 1783-1784, and challenges in reaching Annapolis, representatives from only seven states were initially present at the Maryland State House. Mindful of the nearly two months required to cross the Atlantic, Congress grew concerned that a sufficient number of delegates would not arrive in time to return the ratified treaty by March. This Jefferson articulated. In the Netherlands in 1783, Republicans favored a strong legislature and limited power in the head of state (stadholder), while the Orangists favored a powerful stadtholder. It was a period marked by political instability. The republicans were inspired by Enlightenment ideals, like those contained in the Declaration of Independence, and sought a more democratic government. There was unrest, with armed civilians taking over some cities and regions. Jefferson supported the republicans, and the right of patriots to take up arms to combat tyranny. On June 7, 1776, in the Continental Congress, Benjamin Harrison was chosen to introduce fellow Virginian Richard Henry Lee, who introduced the resolution calling for independence from Great Britain. Harrison was selected to read Thomas Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration of Independence to the assembled delegates on July 1, and served as Chairman of the Whole during the debate over independence on July 2. He then signed Declaration of Independence. After the war, he was governor of Virginia. On December 31, 1783, Jefferson wrote to Harrison, then governor of Virginia, reporting approvingly on the activities of the Republican Movement in the Netherlands, their right to bear arms, and hoping for a quorum of states to ratify the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War.This is the free frank that accompanied that letter. Autograph document signed, Annapolis, December 31, 1783, a full sheet addressed in Jefferson’s hand reading “His Excellency Governor Harrison, Richmond”, and signed at the lower left “Th: Jefferson.” Harrison’s docket is also present, reading “Mr. Jefferson’s letter, Decr. 31, 1783.”

Amsterdam, 1660. No Binding. Near Fine. 17 1/4 x 20 ¼ inches. Fine hand color; reinforced bottom of centerfold, else fine condition. A beautiful example of a cartographic cornerstone that provided the template for the mapping of the Northeast for well into the following century. It is the earliest collectible map to show the correct shapes of both Manhattan and Long Island. Several English settlements along the Connecticut shoreline appear for the first time here as do the Swedish settlements along the Delaware River. Moreover, all of the Indian tribes that were encountered by Europeans at the time can be found on the map. The map was most likely based on a large manuscript map that was used as part of a protest by New Netherlands colonists against the policies of the Dutch West India Company, the organization that sponsored the colonization of New York. The author of the manuscript is believed to have been Adrien van der Donck, a lawyer who was an early resident of New Amsterdam and who led the protest of the colonists. The map first appeared in this reduced, printed version as separate publication in 1651. As Campbell observes, "the prototype map represents Dutch elegance at its best." In addition to its decorative qualities, the map is visually suggestive of the moment in history when European colonies were only tenuously established in the Northeast with the frontier still hovering nearby. As Campbell eloquently puts it: "Indians surrounded them (the European settlements) and from the numerous native names on the map one can almost feel the pressure keeping the settlers back." Burden 305, state 2; Stokes, I.N.P. The Iconography of Manhattan, I, pp. 143-146; Campbell, T. in Tooley, R.V. The Mapping of America, pp. 279, 283.

Wittenberg: Georg Muller, 1594.  Rare first edition of one of the earliest works on the subject of scurvy by the well-known anatomist, undertaken to survey the incidence of the disease in the ducal territories around Wittenberg, and consequently qualifying as an example of public health medicine. According to O’Malley, Alberti was able to positively demonstrate the disease’s prevalence in the territory surveyed, and astutely recommend citrus fruit as part of a preventative diet, a benevolent property later recognized by James Lind in his Treatise on the Scurvy (Edinburg, 1753). “The book was known by James Lind and referred to by him in his celebrated treatise” (O’Malley, p. 98). Salomon Alberti (1540-1600) is best known for producing the first illustrations of the venous valves and for producing the first extensive printed account devoted solely to their function in his Tres Orationes (Nuremberg, 1585). The correct understanding of the venous valves was essential to Harvey’s concept of a systemic circulation of the blood. The work went through at least two 17th-century editions (1624; 1674), though the editio princeps appears to be the only one containing Alberti’s public disputation of 1591 with Ernestus Hettenbach, which constitutes the first public announcement of his results. NUC lists NLM; OCLC adds UCLA Medical and Oxford for this edition. * Durling 81 (giving incorrect no. of pages, but correct signature run A-Q8, R4); not in Adams or Waller, and first edition not at Wellcome; C. ITALIAN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY ON THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, ONLY ONE U.S. COPY Turin, La Letteratura, 1888. 8vo (18 x 12 cm), 25 pp. Bound in blue publisher's wrappers. Small tear to the upper margin of cover, and clean tear not affecting printed text on two leaves. Discreet collector's stamp on cover. Generally very fresh. First edition of this Italian ethnographic work on the Indigenous peoples of North America. The first section focuses on the funerary rites and ceremonial dances of the Choctaw, Otoe, Oconee, Esselen, and Yoki tribes. Of special interest is Grossi's meticulous account of a three-day funeral for a Yoki chief, which was attended by 200 people—including an Esselen delegation—and features descriptions of the traditional costumes worn. The second half of the work explores oral traditions and poetry, specifically focusing on the Maidu and Muscogee peoples. This section includes rare song fragments translations covering religious, romantic, and funerary themes. The author, Vincenzo Grossi (1860–1913), was an Italian ethnographer and adjunct lecturer at the University of Genoa. His work draws heavily on seminal contemporary sources, such as Stephen Powers' Tribes of California (1877) and H.H. Bancroft's Native Races of the Pacific States (1874–75. In his 1886 paper, "Lingue, letteratura e tradizioni popolari degli Indigeni d'America," Grossi's research demonstrated the influence of contemporary reports by the Bureau of American Ethnology and works on Indigenous American linguistics by Friederich Müller and Daniel Brinton (Giordano, p. 92). OCLC records one U.S. copy at Rice University.* Fedora Giordano, "The Anxiety of Discovery: The Italian Interest in Native American Studies," RSA Journal, vol. 5 (1994), pp. 81-109.

1945. (WORLD WAR II). Pre-battle map of Okinawa Island. Washington: Army Map Service, 1945. Single sheet, measuring 22-1/2 by 20 inches, with black-and-white topographical map on Side A and color oceanographic map on Side B. $2500.Official doubled-sided U.S. Army map of Okinawa Island before the Battle of Okinawa, labeled ""SECRET.""The Battle of Okinawa (code name ""Operation Iceberg"") took place on Okinawa Island between April 1, 1945 and June 22, 1945. One of the Ryukyu Islands extending southwest of the Japanese mainland, Okinawa was of paramount strategic importance. Allied forces needed it to launch Operation Downfall, the large-scale on-the-ground invasion of Japan anticipated to take place in November 1945. Allied forces, the bulk of which were U.S. Army and marines, faced off against the Imperial Japanese Army and conscripted indigenous Okinawan civilians that spring. The Allies launched a multi-pronged amphibious assault of Okinawa and surrounding islands. Although the Allies significantly outnumbered defenders, the Japanese brooked their efforts with kamikaze and other extreme defense tactics. Approximately 250,000 died from war, starvation, illness, and mass suicide in what would be the bloodiest battle in the Pacific Theater.Side A of this map shows Beach Landing zones coded by color and number extending down the western coast of southern Okinawa Island and corresponding to the area around modern day Yomitan. Kedena Air Base, from which Allied forces planned to transport troops in Operation Downfall, is located just a little further inland outside of the map limits. The map shows roads, airports, railroad, and radio towers, and lighthouses, as well as underwater currents, obstacles, and cables. Gun, pill box, block house, and earth-covered installations are demarcated as are limited topographical features. A Japanese-English glossary of helpful topographical terms underscores the nature of the foreign invasion.Side B shows a composite image of an aerial photo map overlaid with a topographical map, also reproduced in February 1945 a few months prior to Operation Iceberg. This map shows landmarks like airports, docks, and major cities, while also giving a sense of water currents and depth. On April 1, 1945, Commander of the Tenth Army Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. successfully launched an amphibious assault against this very coastline. His Army divisions and Marines, commanded by Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., Roy Geiger, John R. Hodge, and Pedro de Valle, among others, landed in waves on Hagushi Beaches (shown on both sides of this map.) Allied forces met such little resistance that they captured Yomitan Air Base (shown as ""Yontan Airport"" on Side A) and Kedena Air Base within hours. Lieutenant General Buckner was killed by coral shrapnel just days before the battle's conclusion, on June 18, 1945.This map and scant others like it facilitated the Allied invasion by introducing troops to the topography, landmarks, and place names of Okinawa Island. Accurate maps depended on military intelligence collected using the latest technology. Maps related to the Battle of Okinawa are significantly scarcer than D-Day maps (which are highly coveted). Fine condition.

1847. First Edition. PACKE, Edmund. An Historical Record of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, or Oxford Blues: Its Services, and the Transactions in which it has Been Engaged, from its First Establishment to the Present Time. London: Parker, Furnivall, 1847. Octavo, original navy cloth recased with original spine laid down. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $1100.Early edition of this 19th-century work on the history of the Oxford Blues cavalry regiment, who fought in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Battle of Waterloo, with frontispiece portrait of the Earl of Oxford, hand-colored vignette title page, black-and-white plate of the standard of King William IV, and six colored plates depicting members of the regiment on horseback in the uniforms worn between 1742 to 1834.This work covers the history of the Royal Horse Guards a.k.a. the Oxford Blues cavalry regiment, from its establishment in the Georgian era to the publication of this book in the early Victorian era. The Blues served in the French Revolutionary Wars, in the Peninsular War, and in the Battle of Waterloo. The author, Edmund Packe, was the son of a distinguished officer who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. While the printed title page is dated 1834, the engraved title page is dated 1847. Moreover, this copy does not call for the 1662 plate; accordingly, it is not present here. This copy does contain the so-called ""extra"" plates for 1815 and 1834—explicitly called for on the plate list of this copy. All of this indicates that this is an early edition, apparently compiled using some sheets from the first edition such as the printed title page, but with a revised plate list and vignette title page and added illustrations. Interior generally quite nice, only light wear and soiling to binding with toning to spine. A near-fine copy.

London: Bickers & Son, 1886. First English language edition. Near Fine. Finely bound by Boundey, Root & Son in half morocco over marbled boards. Top edge brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Internally a pleasing copy, unmarked but for a previous ownership stamp from the Catholic University of America Library to the lower first title. Collates vii, [1, blank], 101, [1, blank]; vii,138: bound without the original paper wrappers else complete. A pleasing copy of an important work, Isabel Burton's first translation into English of J. de Alencar, the father of modern Brazilian literature. The daughter of British gentry and one of England's most influential Catholic families, Isabel Arundell Burton was educated and intelligent in her own rite. But her marriage to explorer Sir Richard Burton brought a new level of adventure to her life. Before their courtship even began, "Burton had become the first infidel to infiltrate Mecca as one of the faithful, and in an expedition to discover the source of the Nile, would be the first white man to see Lake Tanganyika. After being married, the Burtons traveled and experienced the world, from diplomatic postings in Brazil and Africa to hair raising adventures in the Syrian desert" (Lovell). It was during the couple's time in Brazil that Isabel learned of two indigenous writers, whose works were not available in English. The desire to spread these stories -- and their authors' names -- motivated the translation, as, likely, did Burton's encouragement of his wife to take on literary projects. According to the preface of Iracema, the book which bears Isabel's name alone as translator, " I cannot allow my readers to remain ignorant of the name Senhor J. de Alencar, the author of this and several other works; for he deserves to be as well known in England as in Brazil...He is their first prose and romance writer. His style, written in the best Portuguese of the present day...contains poetic and delicate touches, and beauty in similes, yet it is real and true to life...I cannot thank him sufficiently for having allowed so incompetent a translator to be the first to introduce him to the British public." Of course, the cache of having Isabel Burton take up the work increased the likelihood that the novel would be noticed and devoured by the English. And Isabel, in a spirit of cultural exchange, pushes for white Europeans to appreciate and engage with the beauty of another culture's literature. Though Burton performed her translations in 1865-1869, Iracema would not appear in print until 1886, in a combined issue with her and her husband's joint translation of Manuel de Moraes. Alencar, now considered one of the fathers of modern Brazilian literature, was a writer made accessible to English speakers thanks to Burton's own appreciation of his language and her desire to share it. Near Fine.

Description
Two works in one volume, folio (395x250 mm). Smith: [12], L, [2], 159, [25] pp. Engraved portrait of Sir Robert Cotton by R. White after C. Johnson, title vignette of the Sheldonian Theater and 2 engraved headpieces by M. Burghers. Text printed in two columns. Bernard:two parts: [32], 374 [i.e. 376], [44], 88, [10], 89-274 [i. e. 174], [8] pp.; 403 [i.e. 308], [24], 65, [9] pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Sir Thomas Bodley, with inset portraits of the Earl of Pembroke, Archbishop Laud, Sir Kenelm Digby and John Selden, engraved vignette on title-page of the Bodleian Library. Epistola dated September 1698.Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt (rubbed, upper joint split, spine ends a little worn). Some foxing and browning due to the quality of the paper, overall a good, genuine copy from the Macclesfield Library (with its engraved bookplate and embossed stamp). I. First edition "of the only complete record of the celebrated manuscript library of Sir Robert Bruce Cotton which to the present day is one of the best-known components of the British Library; presented by his grandson, Sir John Cotton, to whom the volume is dedicated, to the nation in 1701, it fell victim to a disastrous fire in 1731, when 212 of 958 manuscripts were destroyed or badly damaged. Thomas Smith, a non-juring divine and scholar, at times of Magdalen College, Oxford, had a rather checkered career, but finally settled down in the household of Sir John Cotton and his grandson, another Sir John, and a fine collector himself, was for twelve years in charge of the Cottonian manuscripts" (Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, Christie's, New York, 2005, part II, no. 161). One of the three collections acquired by the British government to form the British Museum Library, the library of Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571-1631) is "arguably the most important collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual" (C.J. Wright, Sir Robert Cotton As Collector: Essays on an Early Stuart Courtier and His Legacy, London, 1997). The library, which was transferred to the British museum in 1757 and contains spectacular treasures like the Lindisfarne Gospels, two of the contemporary copies of the Magna Charta, and the only surviving manuscript of Beowulf, was the result of Cotton's forty-year research and effort to preserve manuscript materials, principally relating to England's history and governmental affairs. Located in Cotton House in the Palace of Westminster, the library was housed in a narrow room and had an unusual arrangement. A bronze bust of a historical personage, including Augustus Caesar, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Nero, Otho, and Vespasian, was placed at the head of each bookcase. In total, there were fourteen busts, and the shelf marks were thus formed by bust name, shelf letter and volume number. The catalogue, compiled by Thomas Smith, includes a life of Cotton and a history of the library (cf. C.G. Tite, ed., Catalogue of the manuscripts in the Cottonian library, 1696, Cambridge, 1984). II. "First edition of Bernard's great catalogue of manuscripts in British libraries. This is 'one of the most notable achievements of early English bibliographers […] When G. Haenel, in 1830, printed his 'Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum', he thought so much of Bernard's work that he endeavoured to supplement him rather than to duplicate his lists' (De Ricci, p. 9). Part I [Bibliotheca Bodleiana] contains a life of Bodley, a description of the Bodleian, lists of various collections of manuscripts contained in it, such as those of Pembroke, Cromwell, Digby, Laud, Junius, Hyde and Ashmole. Part II [Bibliothecae collegiorum oxiniensium] lists the manuscripts in Oxford Colleges; Part III [Academia Cantabrigiensis] those in Cambridge Colleges. Part I of vol. 2 [Publicae quam privatae Angliae bibliothecae] contains the manuscripts in public, cathedral, and school libraries and in some fifty private collections, including those of Evelyn Hobbes, Brotherton, Sloane, Lord Derby, Leneve, and Isaac Vossius. All parts have general indices" (Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, Christie's, New York, 2005, part III, no. 1180). Part II of vol. 2 [Bibliothecae Hiberniae] is dedicated to the manuscripts in Irish libraries. Wing, S4233 & C1253.

Description
Vienna: Leopold Voigt, 1682. 20 (303 x 200 mm). Large folding plates (525 x 1850 mm, comprising 5 large plates joined together). Contemporary marbled wrappers; cloth folding case. In 1679, Vienna was visited by one of the last big plague epidemics. Fleeing the` city, Emperor Leopold I vowed to erect a marble mercy column if the epidemic would end. A temporary wooden structure was erected in the same year. Three years later, Leopold's vow was renewed. This volume and the large folding plate are commemorating an early conservative design for the memorial column known as "Pestsäule" ("plague column") in Vienna, which was finally inaugurated in High Baroque style in 1693.

Description
575 pages. Duodecimo (5" x 3 1/2") bound in original vellum. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 4564)Marco Girolamo Vida was an Italian Humanist. He came to Rome under Julius II; as a priest and canon regular, he presented, in the rather lax Court, the greatest example of severity of morals. The Humanists were called upon to produce a great Christian epic. Vida undertook it, and in order that he might work at it Leo X gave him the priory of St. Sylvester at Frascati. The work, the Christias, was not finished until after the death of Leo X. The subject goes beyond the life of Christ and is in reality the establishment of Christianity, for Vida accords much space at the end of his poem to the spread of the Gospel. There is no mythological element in the six cantos; hence the unity of tone is more perfect than in Sannazaro's De partu Virginis. Vida was also the author of short poems, such as De Bombyce, De ludo scaccorum (on chess), and of a second serious and extensive work, De arte poetica, written before 1520 (published in 1527). This didactic poem is interesting as an expression of the ideas of Humanism concerning poetry and because of its great influence. Vida dealt only with the ancients and their imitators, wholly neglecting writers in the vernacular. The general conception of his Ars poetica is inspired by Qunitillian. The writer takes the future poet almost at the cradle, and describes the education and care which he should receive. He instructs him in invention, composition, and especially style, emphasizing particularly the harmony of the verse and defining imitative harmony, examples of which, taken from Virgil, have passed into classical teaching. While Boileau exaggerates the difficulties of poetry and multiplies the duties of the poet, Vida undertakes to cultivate a taste for poetry and to remove the obstacles from the poet's path. In consequence of his plan Vida treats only of poetry in general. To him the model and prince of poets was Virgil, while he depreciates Homer, criticizing his prolixity, repetition, and low style. He was the source of arguments later made use of in France by the partisans of the moderns; Vida was the first to assert that the word "ass" used by Homer did not belong to the noble style. He carried prejudice so far as to congratulate the Latin language for being ignorant of compound words so frequent in Greek. Vida's own style is elegant, clear, harmonious, and ordinarily simple. He was warm in admiration, especially in his eulogies of Virgil, but he is verbose, and if by chance he imitates Horace he dilutes him. The poem is now of interest only as a manifestation of Classicism in modern literature.Vida's poem Scacchia Ludus [Chess Game], contained herein (pages 520-542), first published in 1527 is among the earliest and most influential works related to the game of chess. This compelling didactic poem centers on a game played between Apollo and Mercury on Mount Olympus. Because of its high artistry, it is said the poem made a tremendous impression on anyone who read it including the renowned Dutch humanist of the Renaissance, Desiderius Erasmus. Scacchia Ludus [aka Scaccia Ludus] did much to spread the game's popularity, and in the process directly inspired many other popular works on the game including Jan Kochanowski's poem Chess (c. 1565), in which the game is described as a battle between two armies; and William Jones' Caissa, or the game of chess (1772), a poem which popularized the pseudo-ancient Greek dryad Caïssa as the "goddess of chess". Another lasting effect Vida's poem had on the game of chess was the introduction of a tower as the Rook. Originally, the queen had a somewhat limited role in chess. At the end of the fifteenth century however, the rules changed, and the queen was granted the power of unlimited moves in all directions that had previously belonged to the bishop. (The king only retained his power to move one square at a time.) In an influential and wildly popular Virgilian-style epic, the Scacchia ludus, Vida celebrates the transformation of the game and the power of the queen. He refers to his martial queens both as 'virgo' and 'Amazon', invoking a tradition that views chess as a battle of the Amazons. The language of this influential poem is thus suggestive not just in comprehending the significance of the sisters playing chess, but in understanding the symbolism of the pieces themselvesCondition:Ties lacking edge wear with back upper edge chipped, rubbed, previous owner's name in neat old pen to title else about very good.

Description
New York: Thomas Kelly, 1869. First Edition. Print. Small archival linen tape repairs on the reverse used to strengthen the paper where torn at the margins, two tears going into the image slightly; mild dampstain lower right corner, dampstain at left center margin, small circular stain top center, light foxing spread across the left side, scattered soiling. Quite attractive and now nicely matted and framed. Scarce hand-colored lithograph (28” x 22” matted and framed to an overall size of 34" x 27"), one of a series of four prints published by Kelly and printed by Wm. C. Robertson of Jerome Park, site of the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867. The other three views were FALSE START, SADDLING, and RETURNING TO WEIGH. All are uncommon. The oldest of America's three Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes was first run on June 19, 1867, at the Jerome Park race course (named after owner Leonard W. Jerome), an oddly shaped, English-style track in The Bronx that required its runners to negotiate three turns instead of two because of a dip in the middle of the backstretch. A filly, Ruthless, won the first Belmont's $1,850 winner’s purse, outlasting DeCourcey by a head. The race has been run annually ever since (the last race at Jerome Park was in 1890), with the exception of 1911 and '12, and the Belmont has established itself as the ultimate test of championship stamina in this country.

Three issues, 144 [2],163 [7],186 [17] pp., comprising a complete run of the noted conceptual art journal. 4to, ca. 27 cm. Very good, with endemic light toning to the interior pages. Illus. stiff wraps. [600] Founded by members of the New York Art & Language circle in 1975, the present serial arose out of frustration with the perceived elitism of the originary British contingent of Art & Language. The renegade effort was short-lived, however. By the third issue, tensions within the American group lead to a controversial decision to end the publication and effectively disband the group, rendering the implied solidarity of the six editors' co-signatures on the first black page of issue 1 in the present set all the more poignant. Unsigned issues are common in the marketplace, but the signed edition of no. 1 is extremely rare. Artists' Magazines, pp. 261-2; In Numbers, pp. 70-73.

Boston: Printed for, and sold by E. Battelle, 1784. 44pp, disbound with scattered foxing. Inner margin tear to title leaf, costing several letters on page [2]. Good. Attacking "ecclesiastical usurpations," Badger argues that the New Testament does not require public confession "by those, who, in some particular instances, have transgressed the bounds, which our holy religion has prescribed, as previously necessary to their being permitted to make a publick profession of their faith in Christ, and to their being admitted to attend upon, and conform to the sacramental institutions of the gospel." Badger recommends "christian charity, especially in cases of lesser transgressions." FIRST EDITION. Evans 18337.

Color illus. throughout. 264 pp. Large 4to (297 x 210 mm.), printed softcover. Milan: Lenz Press, 2025. From the publisher's website: "Conceived as a visual résumé, Installation Views provides both a comprehensive overview of Charlotte Posenenske's solo exhibitions and a record of her numerous group shows. The book features an essay written by curator Erlend Hammer on the role of documentary photographs in the circulation of works of art... "The book was published in conjunction with the eponymous show at the Haugar Art Museum in Tønsberg, Norway-the first full-scale presentation of the artist's oeuvre in Scandinavia. The exhibition showcased works from all the artist's major series of modular sculpture. Consisting of works made over the course of less than 12 months, between 1967 and 1968, preceding the abrupt end to Posenenske's career as an artist, the exhibition had the character of a snapshot. We are left wondering whether her withdrawal from the art world was a logical or necessary consequence of the development of the series. What are we to do with Posenenske's assertion that art is powerless to effectively change society for the better?" As new. Designed by Lorenzo Mason Studio.

Description
New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2020. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 6x1x9. First edition. An exceptional copy. 2020 Hard Cover. xx, 343 pp. A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ayad Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear, and where the nation's unhealed wounds wreak havoc around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to palatial suites in Central Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, and spares no one—least of all himself—in the process.
