Description
Praha (Prague): Old Town Cafe, 1881. Very good. Small calendar; 4 1/2 x 3; pp. [8]; wraps in red and gilt, with oval chromolithographed inlays; leaves with elaborate gilt borders; light wear to edges and corners; a few mild spots to wraps verso; in very good condition. A tiny, yet quite-lavish New Year's gift to the customers of the Old Town Cafe in Prague, it depicted portraits of Rudolf Franz Karl Josef, Crown Prince of Austria (1858 – 1889), the only son and third child of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, and his soon-to-be wife Princess Stephanie Clotilde Louise Herminie Marie Charlotte of Belgium (1864 – 1945), daughter of King Leopold II of Belgium. The two would marry later that year - on May 10th, 1881. The marriage would not be a happy one, for Prince Rudolf's heavy drinking and numerous affairs, and it would ultimately end in 1889, with the prince's joint suicide, together with his mistress - 18-year-old Baroness Marie Alexandrine "Mary" von Vetsera.
