Description
Chicago: The Overland Publishing Compant, 1879 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. Small octavo. 7¾ x 5¼ inches. Pp. [8], [25]-322. Illustrated with 17 [of 18] double-page plates, and a multitude of illustrations throughout including railway routes and scenery from all over the West. Includes a double-page bird's-eye-view of San Francisco. Publisher's Royal blue cloth lettered and decorated in black. Spine ends and corners a bit frayed, a few spots. One of two leaves opened carelessly. A very good copy. The new Crofutt guide was first published in 1879 (as offered here), and made an annual appearance with revisions for some time thereafter. This copy is styled on the title page: "VOL. 1 - 1878-9." The second volume in the series was styled, "VOL. 2, 1879-80." However, Flake calls the second volume only a revision and not a continuation of our first volume. This work is abundantly illustrated including 17 [of 18] double-page engraved plates (lacking Plate 1) and a multitude of further illustrations including railway routes and scenery from all over the West. The Crofutt series was by far the best available guide to the early transcontinental traveler. It marked the beginnings of guides for recreational travel in the West. Containing a Condensed and Authentic Description of Over One Thousand Two Hundred Cities, Towns, Villages, Stations, Government Fort and Camps, Mountains, Lakes, Rivers, Sulphur, Soda and Hot Springs, Scenery, Watering Places, and Summer Resorts; Where To Look for and Hunt the Buffalo, Antelope, Deer and Other Game; Trout Fishing, etc., etc. In Fact, To Tell You What Is Worth Seeing--Where To See It - Where To Go - How To Go - and Whom To Stop with while Passing over the Union, Central and Southern Pacific Railroads, Their Branches and Connections, by Rail, Water and Stage, from - Sunrise to Sunset, and Part the Way Back; through Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, California and Arizona. [Flake: 2593]..
