Description
1926. VIRGIL. Les Eclogues de Virgile. Texte Latin et Traduction Francaise de Marc Laforgue imprimees par Harry de Kessler. With 43 woodcut engravings by Aristide Maillol, initials and title-page designed by Eric Gill. Large 4to. Loose in the original wrappers and publisher's vellum-backed folding case. Leipzig: Cranach Presse, 1926. First Edition, one of only 250 copies printed in French. There were also editions in English and German. Joseph Blumenthal writes: "A Cranach Presse monument is, surely, the Virgil Eclogues of 1926 with woodcuts by Aristide Maillol, with a title page and initial letters by Eric Gill, a roman type cut under the direction of Emery Walker, and an italic by Edward Johnston. The paper was made by hand by Maillol's nephew at Monval near Paris. The book is a fine classical setting with harmonious relations between type, paper, and the exquisite illustrations." Although best-known as one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century, Maillol was a prolific book illustrator, and the Virgil is certainly his major work in this medium. An immaculate copy without any of the foxing which mars many copies. Ransom 163 ("landmark of the movement"). Müller-Krumbach 40 (reproducing both binding and title-page). Art of the Printed Book, p. 38 and plate 110. Artist and the Book 172. Rewald, The Woodcuts of Maillol 8-53. Evan Gill, no. 328.

Description
Paris, Éditions GLM, 1937. MAN RAY. La Photographie n'est pas L'Art. [Paris]: Éditions GLM, 1937. Slim octavo, 17 loose leaves in original flexible blue cloth portfolio, original black die-cut wrapper. First edition of this landmark treatise, with 12 full-page halftones of Man Ray's distinctive photographs, 'regarded by some as amongst the greatest of the 20th century' (Parr & Badger). Jean Cocteau called him 'the poet of the darkroom.' 'It was with Man Ray's arrival in Paris in the summer of 1921, when Dada was at its height, that photographic experimentation, temporarily leaderless after the disastrous war, took a decisive new direction' (Frizot, 442). 'Man Ray's work introduced a particular note [to Dadaism], since he used photography and recognized early on that this medium could reproduce the effects of object-based art in two-dimensional form. Photography was in a position to preserve the ordinary and to unleash surreal effects' (Icons of Photography, 26). 'Although he incorporated photography into his Dadaist practice, much of his photographic activity was given over to conventional portrait and fashion commissions. This rankled with him, and 'photography is not an art' was a constant theme in his work. La Photographie n'est pas L'Art is one of the most enigmatic yet advanced of all his books. It can be taken as a summation of his experiments in photography, and might be said to be his photographic swansong' (Parr & Badger, 108-09). With text by André Breton. See Roth, 80-81, 86-87. Interior and images fine. Only light sunning to cover through aperture in wrapper. A fine copy. Scarce. (Bauman quote) In a contemporary clam shell box in blue cloth.

Description
New York: Leavitt and Allen, 1860. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. A tight, well-preserved copy of the uncommon original edition, circa 1860. Solid and VG+ in its decorative blindstamped cloth, with still-bright gilt-titling and design at the spine. A crisp, clean interior, save for just a touch of light, occasional foxing to the text and along the edges. 64mo, an extensive collection of patriotic songs (just shy of a hundred), produced no doubt partly as a result of the unprecedented --and unsettling-- recent threats to the Union.

Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2010. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Hamilton, William. Octavo, 9 by 6 inches, 300 pages. The type is Bruce Old Style, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris, with handset Greco Bold and Greco Adornado for display. The images were printed from photopolymer plates. The paper is Mohawk Superfine. The binding, done in-house, is machine-sewn, in full cloth silk-screened in three colors with the Cuban flag and a spine title. The endpapers have a drawing by Hamilton. Edition of 300 numbered copies, plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce. Graham Green (1904-1991) was a major English writer, the author of more than twenty-five novels, although he preferred to call books like "Our Man in Havana" "entertainments". Yet this "high comic mayhem", as Christopher Buckley calls it, has endured as an important work of literature, timeless in its skepticism about the competence of the intelligence community. The motion picture based on the novel, starring Alec Guinness and Burl Ives, is so hilariously true to the story that viewers turn into readers. William Hamilton, a prolific "New Yorker" magazine cartoonist, had already illustrated the Arion edition of "Tartuffe" (no. 68) when he accepted the assignent to add visual amusement to this book. Please note that this title is now out of print, other than a sole remaining display copy, which we offer here. While this copy was likely used for disply on occasion, and is marked "Display III" at the colophon, it is in appearance fine, clean and without wear. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. This work, "The Stupid Joke", is the first separate printing of the story which was first published in "Dark Forces" (in 1980, edited by Kirby McCauley), and would subsequently be reprinted in "Amphigorey Also". The story revolves around a young boy named Friedrich who "One winter morning...woke With an idea for a joke". The joke was....well, let us say...unfortunate for Friedrich. All of the names in the subtitle (which in the book are the first page of text, almost serving as a "title page") are spoofs; Gorey has signed this book at the colophon using one of the names, "Mrs. Regera Dowdy", being one of the many anagrams he used. ___DESCRIPTION: Stapled binding in illustrated black over grey cardstock wraps, the first page of text being "spoof" names, the story unfolds with two lines of text on the versos and the corresponding Gorey monochrome illustrations on the facing rectos, colophon printed on the recto of the rear wrap with the limitation number of "3" written by Gorey, his signature below signing as "Mrs Regera Dowdy"; oblong sixmo size (5" tall by 6" wide), unpaginated with sixteen leaves (thirty-two pages). ___CONDITION: Fine; the wraps are clean and without edgewear, the stapled binding is strong, the staples have not rusted, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. ___CITATION: Toledano A100. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Cleveland: World Publishing Company, 1944. FIRST EDITION. Numerous text illustrations. Publisher’s red cloth, original dust jacket, other than some wearing at the corners and edges, in excellent condition. First edition of this really incredible book by Dunninger, probably the most famous mentalist of all time. Here he defines mental telepathy and challenges his readers to understand the techniques of the practice. Not only does he explain the methods of thought reading, but provides twenty-four practice tests, enabling the reader to attempt the same feats performed by Dunninger himself. Dunninger (1892-1975) was one of the pioneer performers of magic on radio and television. A debunker of fraudulent mediums, Dunninger claimed to replicate through trickery all spiritualist phenomena. He performed for such luminaries as Thomas Edison and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as for President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt at the White House. He started on radio in 1943, and went on to perform on many television shows thereafter.

Description
Large 8vo, leather without boards, with gilt title on front cover, illustrated, 900 pp. Spine almost completely gone, covers worn and torn, and not that securely attached to book, a couple of signatures are a bit loose, normal aging; still a decent copy. Automobile of America books from this period are rather scarce, and often in poor condition. This book is the New York and Canada edition, and it is loaded with many attractive ads for resorts, with some in color. There are also a good number of maps, including those for Rochester, the Adirondacks, Lakewood, New Jersey, and a couple of folding maps of New York. The hotel and tour ads for upstate New York and New Jersey are really nice, and provide a historic view on what vacationing was likw early in the last century.
